Danny Elfman’s wild performance of The Simpsons theme at Coachella becomes most-talked-about moment from festival

Was a shirtless, tattoo-covered Danny Elfman rocking out to The Simpsons tune on an electric guitar and backed by a full orchestra on your Coachella bingo card?

Sure, we expected certain elements of the annual festival, such as Queen of Coachella Vanessa Hudgens returning to her spiritual home, and Harry Styles wearing a jumpsuit, but this one took us all by surprise.

Elfman, who is known as a master of theme tunes and composed the much-loved intro to the long-running Simpsons series way back when it first premiered on TV in 1989, performed a 19-track set at the music festival on Saturday night that has shaken and stirred the masses.

The music man, 68, played tunes including his Spider-Man Main Title, a Jack’s Lament/This Is Halloween/What’s This? medley from The Nightmare Before Christmas, Breakfast Machine from Pee-wee’s Big Adventure and several tracks by his band Oingo Boingo, with The Simpsons theme placed in the middle.

Elfman helmed the stage as the theme’s visuals were projected onto a giant screen, with the famous ‘Theeee Siiiimpsoooons’ introduction eliciting cheers from the crowd.

While it’s arguably gone down as the most-talked-about moment from the weekend’s event – which has some stiff competition there, being Coachella and all – Elfman has since revealed his shock at the reaction.

‘I wasn’t expecting to get such a reaction, and some of the crazy headlines — like, Yahoo said, “68-year-old Elfman and 20-year-old Eilish make festival history.” And I just thought that was hilarious, Billie and I being the wunderkind and the elder statesman of Coachella. Stuff like that was priceless in its weird way,’ he said this week.

Addressing the undeniable thirst for the composer after he took his top off mid-way through the set (while weathering a very Coachella-esque dust storm on stage), showing off an impressive collection of inkings on his torso, Elfman continued to Variety: ‘All that hard work pays off, I guess. You know, I’ve tried my whole life to stay in shape, and I guess I’m glad I did now!

‘Because I thought this was likely going to read like, “Oh my God, I wanted to throw up when I saw him take his shirt off. He looked horrible.” You know, I tend to think of myself that way. So to hear what you’re saying is a surprise for me.’

Today the internet remains in a frenzy after seeing Elfman take to the stage and put on quite the show, with many youngens being introduced to his talent for the first time.

Quite taken aback by certain feelings emerging for the composer, one wrote on Twitter: ‘Danny Elfman at 68. Forgive me father for I have sinned seems my age range just upped itself by 30 years.’

‘Danny Elfman is jacked, tatted and has a legacy that will live forever like an alternative universe Ed Sheeran,’ another noted, bringing some multiverse madness into the mix.

Another spoke for a lot of punters, as they wrote: ‘Genuinely cannot imagine a bigger W than playing coachella aged 68 jacked to f**k covered in tattoos reminding everyone you wrote the simpsons theme and the batman theme and the nightmare before christmas music & all the oingo boingo hits and wes borland is playing guitar for you [sic].’

Honestly, we don’t know what Elfman will put out of his hat for weekend two…

‘There were too many Asian employees’: Abercrombie & Fitch staff expose vile racist abuse in horrifying Netflix documentary

Abercrombie & Fitch staff have exposed the abhorrent racism and discrimination they experienced while working at the store in Netflix’s new documentary White Hot: The Rise And Fall Of Abercrombie & Fitch.

The company faced a huge lawsuit in 2004 and was accused of discriminating against African Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans, and women by offering floor sales positions and store management positions to white people.

Recalling his ordeal, Dr Anthony Ocampo was told he couldn’t be rehired because ‘we already have two Filipinos working at this store’.

‘At no point did I say I was Filipino so that was a guess on the part of the person that worked there,’ he continued. ‘I remember I told my parents and I told close friends and they very much agreed with me that it was f*cked up.’

‘I’ve never seen racism that explicit,’ he continued. ‘I was really p*ssed off. I was in a rage that never went away.

‘When I was invited to be a part of the lawsuit, I thought here’s an opportunity to call Abercrombie on their bulls*it of trying to say that they’re an all American brand, and yet, the way they’re maintaining this image of all American is to hire a bunch of white folks and fire a bunch of people of colour.’

Jennifer Sheahan was also let go from her branch of Abercrombie & Fitch after corporate decided there were too many Asian people working at the store.

Speaking in the documentary, she claimed she was told by her manager: ‘The real reason was because after the corporate blitz, one of the people from corporate went around and noticed a bunch of Asian people in the store.

‘They said, “well, you need to have more staff that looks like this” and they pointed to an Abercrombie poster, and it was a Caucasian model.’

Jennifer said their decision to let her go ‘hurt’ because she had such a positive experience with the brand.

‘To find out they were like, “no we don’t want you because of the way you look” it was actually very hurtful,’ she admitted.

Carla Barrientos, a Black woman, revealed that she wasn’t scheduled for many hours at her store and requested she was put on more day shifts.

However, she was told that the only hours available to her were night shifts so she asked her colleague if she could switch hours with her.

The manager was not willing to accommodate Carla’s request to change her shifts, and she was soon taken off the rota altogether.

‘I remember asking him do I still work here?’ she told the camera.

‘He said, “no, you do, just keep calling us”. I knew I had been fired so I just moved on. There wasn’t a resignation or there wasn’t anyone who called me… it was over.’

Abercrombie & Fitch was required to pay almost $50million following the discrimination lawsuit, and they admitted no guilt.

They also signed a consent decree and agreed to change their recruiting, hiring and marketing processes.

The company had to report to a court-appointed monitor for six years and they also were made to introduce a chief diversity officer.

Through a spokesperson, the company told the documentary that they have evolved to become a place of belonging rather than ‘fitting in’.

As of February 2020, Abercrombie & Fitch operated 854 stores across all brands, including Abercrombie Kids, Hollister Co., and Gilly Hicks.

White Hot: The Rise And Fall Of Abercrombie & Fitch is available to stream on Netflix.

Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield left staggered by NSFW caption on teleprompter on This Morning

Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield were taken aback on today’s This Morning when a NSFW caption appeared on the autocue in front of them, so much so that they had to show viewers what the fuss was all about.

On Tuesday’s edition of the ITV show, the presenting duo returned after the Easter bank holiday weekend to deliver a jam-packed programme, speaking to people including David Leigh, the journalist depicted in The Thief, His Wife and The Canoe, as well as Queer Eye star Tan France.

At one point, they introduced a light-hearted segment looking into plush mansions owned by A-listers in the US, including The Dropout actor Amanda Seyfried and The Good Place’s Jameela Jamil.

However, the title of the segment resulted in them stopping in their tracks to express their astonishment to their audience watching across the nation.

After viewers were told about a competition they could take part in for a chance of winning a cash prize, Phillip pointed at the teleprompter in front of them, explaining that Holly had just pointed something out that they simply could not ignore.

Ahead of them, the words ‘porn intro’ were visible on screen, in reference to the ‘house porn’ they were about to discuss with a celebrity real estate expert.

Well that’s one word they might not have been expecting to read out on a Tuesday morning (Picture: ITV)

It wasn’t enough to just tell their viewers what they were looking at, as the co-hosts asked for the camera crew to help them turn the lenses around to show what they were looking at on screen.

‘There are some items that we do, and this was one…,’ Holly remarked, trailing off,

She later quipped: ‘Well that’s not an item I’ve written up this morning I’m afraid!’

When it comes to live TV, autocue laughs are bound to happen every now and then, another example being in December 2021, when Adil Ray was left flustered by a mishap live on Good Morning Britain.

While sitting alongside co-host Ranvir Singh, Adil said the word ‘sex’ instead of ‘six’, before clarifying that the word ‘sex’ had actually appeared on the screen by mistake.

‘It actually says “for sex” in there! It does say that!’ he exclaimed at the time.

Adil then told the camera crew to show the teleprompter on screen, confirming that the error was not his doing.

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.

The cast of BBC’s new period drama Life After Life and the Married At First Sight contestants were randomly thrust together with ‘hellish’ results.

Tonight, the four-part adaptation of Kate Atkinson’s World War II novel airs on BBC Two, boasting a huge cast including Last Night In Soho’s Thomasin Mckenzie and Mare of Easttown’s James McArdle.

However, while filming the highly-anticipated series, the Life After Life cast reluctantly had to live among the Married at First Sight stars, notorious for their explosive rows and unmissable fall outs.

Despite Covid restrictions still being in place, the Life After Life actors said their biggest obstacle was keeping well away from the reality stars.

‘Nothing was as difficult – forget Covid,’ James said.

‘Where Thomasin, Sian [Clifford] and I were staying, we were sharing the apartment blocks with the Married At First Sight UK cast.’

Married at First Sight follows couples who meet for the first time when they come face to face at the alter.

From there, they try to build a relationship by embarking on their honeymoon, moving in together and deciding if they want to spend the rest of their lives with each other.

During the last series, contestant Nikita Jasmine was kicked off the show after hurling a drink over her husband and causing row after row.

Not holding back at a recent Q&A, James added, according to Express.co.uk: ‘I am not kidding. I am here to say it was hell.’

Life After Life follows Ursula Todd, who dies one night in 1910 before she can take her first breath. On the same night Ursula is born and lives. From there she finds herself living, dying and being reborn into different circumstances and time periods.

Life After Life airs tonight at 9pm on BBC Two.

Queer Eye’s Tan France says being ‘beaten up and left for dead’ at five years old in racist assault is reason he no longer lives in UK

Queer Eye star Tan France has opened up about the time he was ‘left for dead’ at five years old after being beaten by a group of men, saying that it ‘wasn’t the first or last time’.

Next week, Tan – who is the resident fashion expert on the hit Netflix reality show – is fronting a BBC documentary called Tan France: Beauty and the Bleach exploring colourism and how some people of colour use bleach in an attempt to lighten their skin.

Having revealed that he bleached his own skin when he was nine years old, during Tuesday’s This Morning, the 38-year-old told Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield about the life-threatening racist attack he suffered as a child, which is why he no longer lives in the UK.

When asked by Phillip whether he was assaulted at five years old, Tan replied: ‘Yeah, it wasn’t the first time and it wasn’t the last time.’

Phillip continued: ‘This is one of the reasons you can’t go back to Doncaster, which is where you grew up. You couldn’t go back in the documentary because of moments like that.’

The TV personality responded: ‘It’s the reason I don’t live in the UK now and it wasn’t based on colourism, it was because of racism.’

Recounting the horrifying incident, Tan said: ‘I was five, I was walking to school, I was on my own. It was literally a block away, so not even two minutes. My mum was working at every hour that god sent, she’s an immigrant. My brother who would normally go to school with me was sick, and so I had to walk alone.

‘On the way to school, a group of men beat me and left me for dead. And it was purely because I’m Pakistani in England.’

Phillip looked gobsmacked as he asked incredulously: ‘A group of men beat a five-year-old?!’

Holly Willoughby on This Morning
Holly was ‘disgusted’ by what she heard (Picture: ITV)

‘Beat and left me for dead. And it was common, it happened very regularly,’ Tan stated.

‘And so partly the reason why I wanted to bleach was I wanted people to not realise at first glance that I was Asian. I thought maybe if they just thought I was foreign, they’ll leave me alone.’

Holly also looked aghast, telling their guest: ‘I’m so sorry, that’s horrible.’

In August last year, Tan revealed that he and his husband Rob France had welcomed a son through surrogacy, who they named Ismail France.

The Queer Eye star said that while an individual doesn’t need to have children to feel compassion towards someone who has suffered a racist assault, he personally ‘feels it so much greater’ since becoming a dad.

After Holly remarked: ‘You don’t need to have kids to realise that’s disgusting,’ Tan added: ‘Now that I have children I realise wow, the thought of my child going through that makes me feel physically sick. Absolutely you do not need to have children to feel that compassion, but now I feel it so much greater.’

Tan France: Beauty and the Bleach airs next Wednesday at 9pm on BBC Two. This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.

Stacey Dooley floored as dominatrix, 70, whips ‘slave for life’ with electric fly swatter

From eco warriors to OnlyFans models, Stacey Dooley thought she’d seen it all… until she met a 70-year-old dominatrix whipping a slave with an electric fly swatter.

In the latest episode of Stacey Dooley Sleeps Over, which follows Stacey spending 72 hours as a house guest for some extraordinary people, the documentary-maker met with Sherry, a dominatrix who makes money by performing a whole range of services for her clients.

In one scene, Stacey visits Sherry’s ‘playroom’ to witness what some of those services are, and although the conservatory-playroom is lined with whips and toys, the TV presenter gets quite the shock when she sees what’s really about to happen.

First, Sherry (who goes my Mistress Sofia at work) sends her client outside to forage for some stinging nettles to use on himself, but unfortunately none are to be found.

Next, he’s asked to strip down naked and is whipped with an electric fly swatter on his bits, as well as clamps being attached and pulled off his nipples.

Recalling the experience, Stacey said it made her ‘gums feel funny’ (Picture: UKTV / Ollie Upton)

Stacey, much like those watching at home, was quite shocked and even more stunned as she watched the man visibly in pain at the whips.

Reflecting on the experience after, she said watching the nipple clamping made her ‘gums feel funny.’

Although Stacey was left in shock, the 44-year-old masked slave, whose identity was kept hidden, revealed: ‘I feel fantastic, I really do.

SWINDON, UNITED KINGDOM - OCTOBER 23, 2019: Granny dominatrix, Sherry Lever, poses for a picture. A MATURE DOMINATRIX with a penchant for kink is helping women find their inner confidence with lessons in BDSM. Sherry Lever, 68, says she's been inundated with requests from women wanting to learn the art of domme ever since appearing on the British TV dating show First Dates. Her alter ego, Mistress Sofia, reinvented herself after watching a documentary about phone-sex workers. The mother-of-three, who charges up to ???120 a session, maintains she doesn't have sexual intercourse with her clients. Sherry told Barcroft TV:
The client paid £120 an hour and travelled nearly 100miles for the experience (Picture: Jason Blalock/Future Publishing via Getty Images)

‘It’s not about me, to me, it’s about Mistress Sofia. To find a mistress who is a dominatrix is the best feeling for me.’

He added that he wasn’t paying the £120 per hour for the service, and travelling nearly 100 miles for the sessions, ‘for sex or sexual gratification at all,’ but got his ‘kinks out of her dominating’ him.

Speaking about her client, Sherry called him one of her ‘real genuine lifestyle slaves’.

‘Whatever I say goes. He said, “I’m a slave for life”, so he’s going to be the one pushing me round in a wheelchair eventually.

Stacey Dooley Sleeps Over, Sherry
Sherry goes by Mistress Sofia at work (Picture: UKTV / Ollie Upton)

‘He’s a masochist, so he absolutely loves punishment and pain,’ she added, comparing her service to ‘an art.’

‘I love when I stand back and see what I’ve done, I think, “Yeah, that’s really well done, that should be in the Louvre hanging on the wall.”‘

While Sherry may hope this client would be pushing her around in a wheelchair, it was only a few years ago that the then 65-year-old appeared on First Dates in 2017, looking for something more than just a client-dominatrix relationship.

Her first appearance on the Channel 4 show didn’t go so well – with her date John laughing about her day job.

While John had told their waiter she was really into him, the camera cut to Sherry moaning about her awful date in the bathroom, and wishing that the same waiter was a few years younger!

In the post date interview, she let John know her thoughts, claiming he was disrespectful and that she never wanted to see him again.

Her next date was slightly luckier, and remained a popular pairing for fans.

Sherry felt obliged to address ‘the elephant in the room,’ and was clearly nervous for his reaction.

‘It’s not prostitution,’ she confirmed, ‘and I like what I do because I’m good at it.’

But, Dave’s response to Sherry’s working life was a breath of fresh air, with him laughing: ‘Not that it’s up to me to judge, but I’ve got absolutely no problem with that,’ as she shared that her ‘slaves’ doubled up as house cleaners.

He in turn felt obliged to share his own juicy secret: he was getting a knee replacement!

Stacey Dooley Sleeps Over airs on Mondays on W and is available online on UKTV Play.

Britain’s Got Talent star Nick Edwards explains why he was already wearing a mic for surprise performance after ‘fix’ row

Nick Edwards delivered one of the standout performances on Britain’s Got Talent over the weekend, when his young daughters surprised him by calling him up on stage, much to his shock.

However, there were some viewers who were dubious that he actually had no idea of what was happening, as he was already mic’d up and had his guitar and song lyrics ready to hand to perform.

While the show has addressed ‘fix’ claims, clarifying the ‘simple explanation’ and stressing that he was ‘totally unsuspecting’, Nick has also explained how the situation unfolded on the day.

During an appearance on This Morning, Nick told co-hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary that he had gone out for the day with some family members while his mum looked after his daughters at home… or so he thought.

While he was out for breakfast, his sister-in-law revealed that they had free tickets to BGT, and so they decided to ‘kill some time’ by heading to the show.

When they had taken their seats, Nick and his family were informed that they were in the ‘Gogglebox’ seats, meaning that their reactions would be recorded to potentially be included in the final edit of the episode.

‘We arrived and we sat down and a lady came up to us and said, “You’re sitting in the Gogglebox chairs. In-between the acts, we scan to the audience and get their reactions and stuff,’ he said.

However, he realised that something was going on when his mum, who’s a dance instructor, appeared on stage with his two girls.

At first, Nick said that his ‘initial reaction was she’s going to get the girls to dance’, before his mum announced to everyone in the auditorium that they wanted him to perform a sing that he frequently sings to his daughters.

He also admitted that at first he ‘didn’t register’ that it would be him taking to the stage.

The singer’s performance and the sweet surprise sparked tears among the audience (Picture: Thames/Syco/Rex/Shutterstock)

To clear up another source of confusion from viewers, Nick added that his family brought his guitar on the day, and his producers gave it over so that he could play the instrument for his audition.

‘This flood of emotion came to me. I was in tears the whole day pretty much,’ he said, having been given around 45 minutes to warm up backstage.

In the end, Nick charmed the judges and viewers alike, earning four yeses to proceed to the next round.

His performance also sparked tears from judges Alesha Dixon and Amanda Holden, as well as presenter Declan Donnelly as he watched from the wings.

BGT may have only just started, but it’s been hit with several ‘fix’ claims from viewers, particularly after established singer Loren Allred won the Golden Buzzer from Amanda.

Loren, who sang for the track Never Enough in The Greatest Showman, has performed with stars including Andrea Bocelli and Michael Bublé, but she spoke out to insist that ‘people don’t know who I am’.

‘I am an unsigned, independent artist still trying to make a name for myself,’ she stated.

Britain’s Got Talent returns on Saturday at 8pm on ITV.

‘Doctor Who was queer long before Russell T Davies’

Doctor Who Yaz
Doctor Who fans have been thrilled over the Doctor and Yaz’s romance (Pictures: Getty / BBC)

Doctor Who fans have been moved by the recent representation in the show, with the Doctor and Yaz’s romantic relationship being confirmed – but it’s not the first time the sci-fi has featured LGBT representation, and it definitely won’t be the last.

Bestselling author Juno Dawson wrote the script for Doctor Who: Redacted, a spin-off podcast that stars actress Charlie Craggs as one of the first trans characters in the Whoniverse.

The 10-part series follows Cleo (Charlie), Abby (Lois Chimimba) and Shawna (Holly Quin-Ankrah), three university drop-outs who start a podcast, The Blue Box Files, to find out more about why a mysterious blue box keeps cropping up across history.

Juno pointed out that, even before showrunnner Russell T Davies rebooted the sci-fi in 2005, the series was at the forefront of representation.

‘Doctor Who is incredibly queer and I think it has been even pre-Russell T Davies,’ she explained to Metro.co.uk.

‘I think when you look at some of the older [series], particularly in the 80s there was a gay guy in charge of Doctor Who called John Nathan-Turner and I think you can see it was all there.’

Nathan-Turner was the longest-serving Doctor Who producer, working on the show from 1980 until it was cancelled in 1989. He cast Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy as the 5th, 6th, and 7th Doctors.

Elsewhere, it’s believed there was a lesbian subtext intended in the relationship between Ace (Sophie Aldred) and Karra (Lisa Bowerman), who both appeared in the classic series.

‘It was subtext, it wasn’t text, and then obviously Russell came in and introduced characters like Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) and the rest is history – we have out LGBT characters in Doctor Who,’ Juno continued.

‘Bethany Black, a trans actress, played a role a few years back [474 in the series nine episode Sleep No More] but her character was an alien so it wasn’t necessarily representation of a trans human,’ she pointed out.

However, Juno added that Cleo, who is the leading character in Doctor Who: Redacted, is almost ‘the next step’ for the show.

Featuring a trans character ‘was never in doubt’ for Juno, with the author adding: ‘When [BBC Sounds] came to me, they said, part of our remit is to represent the licence fee-payer. The BBC has a remit – it has to speak for anyone and everyone who pays that licence fee and, right off the bat, I said, “We’re going to have this fake podcast, these three girls, they’re kind of losers.”

‘If I’m not going to have that representation then who will?’

Russell T Davies

Over the past few years, there’s been a huge discussion about authentic casting – whether cisgender actors should ever be cast as trans characters, or straight actors as gay characters. Eddie Redmayne, who played a trans woman in The Danish Girl, last year said that taking the role was a ‘mistake’, adding that the criticism he faced was justified.

Pointing out that sometimes gay actors are afforded opportunities to play straight characters, like Jonathan Bailey (Anthony Bridgerton) in Bridgerton, Juno explained: ‘It can go both ways.

‘I’m certainly not going to tell casting directors and actors what they can and can’t do. But for me, when I see an LGBT person playing an LGBT character, it just has a ring of truth to it. It’s almost like a barrier is removed and especially with trans roles, I think it’s really important, to me, to see trans actors to play trans characters because otherwise it reinforces this idea that a trans woman is a man in a wig.

John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who
John Barrowman’s Captain Jack was one of the first overtly gay characters introduced (Picture: BBC)

‘Or a trans man is a woman with a short haircut. That’s not what it means to be trans. As great as Eddie Redmayne was in The Danish Girl, as great as Jared Leto was in Dallas Buyers Club, they were kind of men in wigs. That’s the accusation that is hurled at trans woman. And there are so many amazing trans actors out there. Look at what Pose has done. I don’t see the need anymore [for cis actors to play trans characters] and I don’t think it would happen now – I think we’ve moved on.’

As for what she hopes fans will take away from Doctor Who: Redacted, Juno went on: ‘I hope to think that it’s about the people the Doctor has impacted without the Doctor even realising.

‘All the superhero films – I love a Marvel film but those characters, they never stop to think about what happens when they’re gone. All those skyscrapers that have come crashing down, all those Daleks that have been everywhere. What happens to the people like Cleo and Abby and Shawna, the people who don’t get to escape in the Tardis?

‘And I believe Russell is going to expand that Doctor Who universe to tell lots of stories and I think Redacted could be a taste of things to come.’

Doctor Who: Redacted episode one is out now.

The TV presenter was hired to host on streaming service Dazn last June, but has now become too busy to commit to the role, according to sources.

‘Maya loves watching boxing and, despite being criticised for her knowledge of it, she had a blast working there,’ a source told The Sun.

‘But her star power is still rocketing and she is in such high demand that she just can’t commit anymore.’

At the time of her appointment, Maya had faced a lot of criticism for taking the role, with fans calling out that she had no experience.

EastEnders star had also Jake Wood stated that he had ‘a real problem’ with Dazn’s hiring of her.

Speaking to the Daily Star, he had said: ‘Obviously, they are going for a different audience with Maya Jama introducing it, but for my money I like to have someone introducing boxing and talking about boxing who has actually seen a boxing fight and understands just a little bit what boxing is.

‘I understand they’re going for a different audience, and what she does she’s great at, but not for my money.

‘I have a real problem with just the coverage of that. It grates me up the wrong way.’

When fans criticised Maya on social media, the 27-year-old had defended herself, saying that she ‘never claimed to be a boxing expert.’

Replying to a troll on Instagram, she wrote: ‘Just gonna say this once lol I am a host… a presenter… I’m here to ask the experts questions live on tv… with producers in my ears and countdowns and timings to stick to.

‘I enjoy the sport and never claimed to be a boxing expert so you can laugh from your sofa all you want hun.’

Maya, who is engaged to basketball star Ben Simmons, tweeted last November that she planned to be choosier with her jobs.

‘Worked hard enough to only take jobs on that make me feel good inside,’ she wrote.

‘If it doesn’t bring me joy or help others I’m not involved, this next chapter is called ‘enjoyment.”

Metro.co.uk has contacted Maya Jama’s representatives for comment.

Loose Women’s Carol McGiffin slams Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for ‘creating whirlwind’ following Buckingham Palace balcony invite

Loose Women’s Carol McGiffin believes Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s notorious move to America has ‘created a whirlwind.’

Relations between senior members of the Royal family and the Sussexes have been fraught since the pair were stripped from their titles, and things escalated further after the couple’s explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey.

According to recent reports, Harry and Meghan have been invited to appear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to celebrate Her Majesty’s historic reign which will take place on June 2.

During Tuesday’s edition of the daytime programme, presenters Frankie Bridge, Christine Lampard, Kelle Bryan, and Carol discussed the subject in depth, and while the majority thought the public reunion would be a good thing – broadcaster Carol disagreed.

Reflecting on their shocking tell-all with the American host, she said: ‘I still think that it was a terrible betrayal, and it’s good of the Queen to just let it go and not make a big deal.

‘I think if everybody stopped making a big deal out of those two they could just come over, go on the balcony, do the appearance and everyone would go “oh look it’s Harry and Meghan.”‘

She continued: ‘They’ve created this kind of whirlwind around them, and everything they do now becomes massive news. And it does overshadow events up to a point, and it’s wrong.’

Kelle, who held an opposing view challenged Carol and said: ‘They wanted the establishment to look at how they do things, how they control people’s lives and the mistakes happening within their family.’

‘They didn’t have to though, did they,’ Carol retorted. ‘They said they wanted privacy and they haven’t stopped talking about it since. Give it a rest!’

The question of whether Harry and Meghan will be present for the big celebration has been the source of speculation after they did not attend a memorial service to honour Prince Philip last month.

During this year’s Invictus Games, the couple were surrounded by a camera crew filming a Netflix documentary series as part of their company Archewell’s deal.

Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.

Jeremy Clarkson peeved over reaction to Dan Stevens’ Boris Johnson swipe on The One Show

Jeremy Clarkson has blasted double standards after he was ‘never invited back’ on The One Show for making controversial comments while Dan Stevens was applauded for his partygate scandal jibe.

Last week, Downton Abbey star Dan took a swipe at Prime Minister Boris Johnson while discussing his new political drama Gaslit by US network Starz.

Describing the series, he said: ‘Well, what you’ve got is a criminal for a leader who is wrapped in a messy war, embroiled in a stupid scandal and surrounded by ambitious idiots and really should resign and… no I’m sorry… that’s the intro to Boris Johnson.’

Hitting out at the hypocrisy, Jeremy penned: ‘A lefty actor of some sort went on the endlessly annoying The One Show this week and made a feeble joke comparing Boris Johnson to Richard Nixon, the disgraced and now dead ex-US President.

‘As a result of this . . . nothing happened.’

Jeremy then claimed: ‘Whereas when I went on The One Show and made a feeble joke about executing strikers, all hell broke loose.’

Sorry, this video isn't available any more.

‘I was on the front pages,’ he added in his column on The Sun. ‘People demanded an apology and I’ve never been asked back.’

Jeremy was widely criticised after saying public sector workers ‘should be shot’ during an appearance on The One Show in 2011.

He told presenters Alex Jones and Matt Baker at the time: ‘I think they have been fantastic. Absolutely. London today has just been empty. Everybody stayed at home, you can whizz about, restaurants are empty.

‘We have to balance this though, because this is the BBC. Frankly, I’d have them all shot. I would take them outside and execute them in front of their families.’

‘I mean how dare they go on strike when they have got these guilt-edged pensions that are going to be guaranteed while the rest of us have to work for a living.’

Jeremy Clarkson on The One Show

Jeremy’s comments sparked 31,000 Ofcom complaints and while he later apologised , the BBC was forced to defend its decision not to sack Clarkson after widespread calls for his dismissal.

Dan’s criticism of the Prime Minister came after he and Chancellor Rishi Sunak were fined over a birthday party held for Mr Johnson in No 10 during Covid restrictions in June 2020.

Both Mr Johnson and Mr Sunak – and the Prime Minister’s wife Carrie, who was also fined over the party in the Cabinet Room – apologised on Tuesday and confirmed they had paid the fines.

More than 50 fines have been referred to the Acro Criminal Records Office since the Metropolitan Police’s inquiry into alleged lockdown breaches in Downing St and Whitehall started.

The One Show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One.

Embarrassing Bodies is returning with some new faces (Channel 4)

E4 has given viewers a first look at the brand-new doctors taking the reins in the upcoming series of Embarrassing Bodies.

The insightful yet totally unpredictable programme – which ran from 2007 to 2015 – involves people revealing their rare medical conditions to a team of experts, determined to treat them in an attempt to de-stigmatise their unique cases.

The award-winning show will adhere to the original structure for the most part but producers will also shed light on sexual health issues with the help of some ‘well-known celebrities.’

It was confirmed in December 2021 that E4 will be reviving the hit series, but fans will not see the return of Dr Christian Jessen, Dr Dawn Harper and Dr Pixie McKenna.

So with that in mind, which panel of medics will be stepping into their shoes?

Dr Jane Leonard

Embarrassing Bodies is back: meet the new doctors Credit Channel 4
Jane has worked with some famous faces (Picture: Channel 4)

Dr Jane is a fully qualified NHS GP and cosmetic doctor and her clientele range from footballer’s wives to TV stars.

The specialist focused on the anatomy of the face, head and neck, and has worked with a range of TV stars to footballer’s wives. She has also supported patients who were diagnosed with a range of conditions from body dysmorphia to Hirsutism (excess hair growth).

Dr Anand Patel

Dr Anand will be leading the sex and health segment on the upcoming series (Picture: Channel 4)

Dr Anand Patel left medicine in 2004 to become a biology teacher and head of sex education before going back to medicine in 2008.

He often helps patients who are concerned with erectile dysfunction, painful sex, or orgasm problems, and brings his specialist knowledge back into his day job as a GP.

He also co-hosts The Pleasure Podcast which covers physical and emotional relationships in all forms including queer and feminist sex, as well as sexuality in the South Asian community where the subject is still considered taboo.

Dr Tosin Ajayi-Sotubo

Dr Tosin is the founder of the online educational platform Mind Body Doctor (Picture: Channel 4)

Completing the medical line-up is Dr Tosin Ajayi-Sotubo who is a London-based NHS GP with established experience working in both primary and secondary care.

She is also the founder of Mind Body Doctor, an online and social media educational platform that offers a friendly, accessible space to educate and inspire people to take care of what matters most.

Speaking about the show’s return, Commissioning Editor Clemency Green, said: ‘There is no condition too big, too small or embarrassing for our brand-new team of unflinching experts.

‘The original run on Channel 4 made waves in helping to empower people to check their bodies and seek medical assistance without shame, so I can’t wait to once again be confronted, fascinated, and informed on the many and varied problems that walk into our new clinic.’

Those who remember the show a little too vividly will know it broke its fair share of boundaries during its eight-year history.

From third nipples to warts appearing in places they shouldn’t, Dr Jessen and the team saw it all.

Despite all of this, fans praised the programme for raising awareness for various conditions, which in turn allowed people to feel empowered instead of ashamed.

Embarrassing Bodies will premiere on E4 later this year.

Derry Girls star Jamie-Lee O’Donnell already refused to answer Late Late Show host Ryan Tubridy’s age question in interview four years ago

Derry Girls star Jamie-Lee O’Donnell had already refused to answer a question about her age in an interview before the awkward scenes on Friday.

Last week, Channel 4 star Jamie-Lee appeared on Ireland’s national talk show, The Late Late Show, to speak about her role on Lisa McGee’s internationally renowned sitcom.

After three fantastic series and one incredible cameo, fans are preparing to bid farewell to Derry girls Clare, Orla, Erin, Michelle and James at the end of this season.

Jamie-Lee, who plays teenager Michelle, spoke to RTÉ presenter Ryan Tubridy after the first episode of the new series aired, and things went awry when he repeatedly asked her age despite her first avoiding the question.

The actress labeled the question ‘misogynistic’ in the interview, suggesting a man would not have been asked the same thing.

Now it has emerged that presenter Ryan asked Jamie-Lee the same question in an interview four years ago.

As reported by the Irish Independent, during a 2018 interview on Ryan’s RTÉ Radio 1 radio show, the presenter, 48, asked: ‘You play a 16-year-old, you are what age in real life?’

jamie-lee o'donnell ryan tubridy
Jamie-Lee began a conversation on misogyny and double standards on last week’s Late Late show with host Ryan Tubridy(Picture: RTÉ)

To which Jamie-Lee swerved the question by quipping simply that she was ‘not 16’.

Ryan pressed the question, asking: ‘Are you not going to tell us your age?’

Jamie-Lee explained that she was not, because ‘a bit of a big deal was made of it with Nicola [Coughlan, who plays teenager Clare] and I don’t think it was very fair.

She continued: ‘We get a lot of people asking our ages and like nobody would ask Dylan [Llewelyn, who played James] his. So it’s sort of a wee bit unfair and it took away a bit from the performances we were doing.’

The radio host took the hint and said he would ‘tiptoe away’ from the question, with Jamie-Lee agreeing he should, ‘just slightly,’ before she joked: ‘I’m 47, just go with that.’

Last week’s Late Late saw Ryan again broach the question with the actress, beginning with conceding it ‘might be a rude question’.

‘You don’t have to answer,’ he said, adding: ‘Can I ask how old you are?’

Jamie-Lee jokingly quipped back that she was 117 years old and was ‘very, very wise’.

Despite Jamie-Lee swerving the question, Ryan pushed again and repeated: ‘Would you consider telling me what age you are?’

At which point Jamie-Lee gave an answer – starting with ‘this gets on my nerves a wee bit’.

‘It’s always quite misogynistic even if it’s not intentionally misogynistic, because men don’t get the same scrutiny,’ she began.

Ryan jumped in to defend the questioning, saying he ‘would definitely’ have asked a male actor the same question if he was playing a teenager in a show, to which Jamie-Lee said she’d simply have to take his word for it.

The host explained that he only asked the question because Jamie-Lee is playing a teenager and does it ‘so well,’ insisting there ‘was a compliment in there’.

Jamie-Lee thanked him and started to continue but Ryan again jumped in to say she didn’t have to answer and they could ‘move on to something else because I can read a mood when I see it’.

To which a smiling Jamie-Lee quipped: ‘I was going to give you a hilarious anecdote but go ahead.’

The show’s stars have been on the promotional run for the new episodes, with Saoirse-Monica Jackson, who plays Erin, appearing on The One Show last week where she joked the Derry Girls cast soothed Liam Neeson’s nerves ahead of his big cameo.

‘We were there for him to give him acting notes,’ Saoirse-Monica quipped.

‘He was very nervous, he always is.’

Metro.co.uk has reached out to reps for Ryan for comment.

Jim’ll Fix It songwriter enraged that sex offender Jimmy Savile destroyed ‘feel good’ jingle

The songwriter behind the Jim’ll Fix It jingle has complained the late Jimmy Savile ruined his beloved hit.

Savile died in 2011, aged, 84, and having never been brought to justice for his crimes of paedophilia, he’s now thought to be one of Britain’s most prolific sex offenders.

After a string of allegations came to light, the long-serving children’s show – which ran from 1975 to 1994 – was removed from public airing.

Series composer David Mindel was paid £30 to write the now-infamous jingle which represented the BBC show, and he claims the anthem was listed in the top-10 best theme tunes of all time.

But after the shocking Savile scandal, Mindel detests the fact that his creation is now associated with the late TV personality.

‘You’ll find nowhere that Jim’ll Fix It had the highest ratings on TV in the 80s: 20million – three times more than Strictly Come Dancing,’ he told Daily Star.

‘It was voted in the top 10 children’s programmes of all time and the music in the top 10 themes and found to be the best feel-good factor music of the thousands of hits and themes researched.’

‘Jim’ll Fix It has been simply designated to the scrap heap, he added. ‘Totally erased from history because of its presenter.’

It was recently reported that the BBC sold archive footage of Savile to Netflix producers who were behind the ‘unsettling’ 2022 documentary about the child sex offender.

Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story – which premiered on April 6 – examines, through extensive archive footage, the evil within the paedophile, and delves into how he managed to fool an entire nation for four decades.

In one questionable scene, Savile shot down reporter Philip Tibenham when asked whether he took up physical exercise in order to punish himself.

‘The only time you punish yourself is when you’re with young ladies,’ Savile replied.

Many viewers were disturbed by the film with many feeling uneasy by the ‘horror’ he perpetuated.

‘Watching the new Jimmy Savile doco on Netflix and it’s the most unsettling piece of television I think I’ve ever seen,’ one person wrote.

‘Watching #JimmySavile #ABritishHorrorStory – flabbergasted and will take some time to digest the horror and the ease that horror was perpetrated,’ another said.

Jada Pinkett Smith has announced the return of her hit talk show series Red Table Talk, just weeks after the controversy surrounding husband Will Smith and the Oscars.

The Girls Trip actress will debut season five of the popular Facebook Watch series on Wednesday, with her daughter Willow Smith and mother Adrienne Banfield joining her once again.

It looks as though the next set of episodes will be an emotional ride as Jada, Willow and Adrienne sit down to chat to singer Janelle Monae about her coming out at the age of 32, as well as the trauma she experienced as a result of her father’s drug addiction.

Janelle, who will also be joined by her mum Janet Hawthorne, expressed her excitement to finally make it to the famous red table, and tells the hosts in the trailer: ‘I’m just happy someone invited me. I said, “The Red Table? Are you kidding me!”’

Also set to appear in the new season are Oscar-winning actress Kim Basinger and her model daughter Ireland Baldwin.

In the teaser, Kim is seen opening up about her split from Ireland’s father Alec Baldwin, saying: ‘I went through a very heavy duty, out loud, when you’re in the public divorce.

‘I wouldn’t leave the house, I would no longer go to dinner. I had to relearn to drive.’

Sharing her personal trauma, Ireland discusses the turbulent relationships she’s experienced in the past, revealing: ‘I have been in physical abusive relationships, I have been in emotional, verbal, very gaslit-manipulative relationships.

‘I’ve been through a lot of different kinds of abuse.’

In the most poignant moment of the trailer, the trio meet the mother of Miss USA Cheslie Kryst, who died by suicide earlier this year.

Jada will later hand over the table to her children, Willow and Jaden, and stepson Trey, who will host their first ever solo episode together as a group.

However, there is no mention of the scandal surrounding Jada and husband Will following the Oscars last month.

Will infamously slapped comedian Chris Rock across the face for making a joke about Jada and her hair, despite her suffering from hair loss condition alopecia.

The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air star has kept out of the public eye since that night, but has resigned from the Academy while also receiving a 10-year ban from attending the Oscars.

Speculation is rife about whether Will and Jada will address the incident in a future special episode of Red Table Talk.

Red Table Talk returns to Facebook Watch on Wednesday, April 20 with new episodes streaming weekly.

Liam Neeson would be up for a return to Star Wars – but under one condition

Ahead of the launch of Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney Plus next month, many fans are undoubtedly hoping there will be plenty of cameos from the stars of the Star Wars prequel film trilogy in the series.

However, it doesn’t appear as though Liam Neeson, who portrayed Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn opposite Ewan McGregor, will be among them… despite teasing he’d be open to a return to the franchise at some point in future.

The upcoming show will see Ewan reprise his role as the titular character a decade after his fallout with Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen), following his former Padawan’s fall from grace and transformation into the terror-inducing villain Darth Vader.

Liam starred in the 1999 film The Phantom Menace when Anakin was introduced as a young boy, played by Jake Lloyd.

Qui-Gon Jinn was seen as a Force ghost in the animated show The Clone Wars, while his voice was also heard in the 2002 sequel Attack of the Clones and the 2019 release The Rise of Skywalker.

When asked about the possibility of returning to Star Wars, Liam responded: ‘Oh, I think so, yeah, yeah, yeah, I think so … if it was a film. Yeah, I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to TV, I must admit, I just like the big screen, you know?’

Speaking to ComicBook.com, the 69-year-old added that he ‘can’t believe’ it’s been 24 years since The Phantom Menace came out.

‘I just cannot believe where the time has gone. It was a terrific experience, shooting that film in London,’ he said.

In 2020, the Taken star – who recently made a crowd-pleasing cameo in Derry Girls – admitted he’s ‘not a huge fan’ of the superhero genre, having starred in Batman Begins as Ra’s al Ghul opposite Christian Bale.

Liam Neeson in Derry Girls
The actor took Derry Girls by surprise with his cameo in the third season opener (Picture: Channel 4)

‘I admire the actors and I know some of the actors who do it – and do it fantastically. It’s just not my genre, it really isn’t. The first Star Wars, I was in that, that was 22 years ago, and I enjoyed that, because it was novel and that was new,’ he told Entertainment Tonight at the time.

‘I was acting to tennis balls, which were ultimately going to be little fuzzy furry creatures and stuff. That was interesting, acting-wise, to try and make that seem real, but that was the last. It’s quite exhausting.’

Obi-Wan Kenobi is set to premiere on Friday May 27 on Disney Plus.

The Queen even kept 007 Olympics sketch with Daniel Craig secret from royal family: ‘She didn’t want them to know’

The Queen kept her iconic 007 skit a secret from the royal family in the run up to the 2012 Olympic games, it has been revealed.

Queen Elizabeth starred with Daniel Craig in a comedy sketch that aired during the London Summer Olympics opening ceremony, which saw ‘the Queen’ jump out of a helicopter and parachute into the Olympic stadium.

However, despite the iconic moment having required immense planning, the royal family were kept in the dark about the idea.

Speaking on an episode of BBC Radio Four’s show The Reunion, members of the production team behind the opening ceremony revealed the behind-the-scenes planning to host Kirsty Wark.

Production stage manager Sam Hunter said: ‘The Queen never told her family she was doing it.

‘That was one of the stipulations when she agreed to be part of it but she didn’t want them to know.

the queen, daniel craig

‘So if you actually see when she comes and she takes her seat, you can see her family go, “Ah, nice one.”‘

It was even recalled that the Queen ‘ran down the corridor’ from her private room in the stadium to watch the stunt through a window live as it happened.

While her family may have been amused, the real reason behind keeping it a secret is less playful.

‘What was hard was that you didn’t really want to say much to the cabinet because you didn’t know how secure they were,’ Olympics opening ceremony executive producer Stephen Daldry said.

It was an iconic moment! (Picture: Getty)

He revealed that he ‘didn’t want to say’ that the Queen would be jumping out of a helicopter, because he ‘wasn’t sure that they [the cabinet] would keep their mouth shut.’

‘I think the Queen was amused at the idea, we were quite surprised that she agreed to do the jump,’ Stephen added.

‘But I think they have a tradition of practical jokes and I think for her it was a really good practical joke about the grandchildren not knowing that she was going to do it, and she thought it was going to be very funny for them.’

Recently, Daniel recalled another moment showcasing the Queen’s playful side.

Appearing on The Late Show earlier this year, the James Bond icon, 53, spoke about a witty comment she made, saying: ‘[She is] very funny, wants to crack a joke, and crack a joke about me.

‘We were having our photograph taken, and she just went, “Oh no, he’s the one that doesn’t smile”.’

The Knives Out star admitted he loved ‘rolling around on the floor’ with Her Majesty’s famous pack of pampered corgis.

He said: ‘I was rolling around on the floor with them most of the time. I mean, they’re just there. I think they have their own footmen. They’re very friendly.’

The Reunion is available on BBC Sounds.

Debbie, who said Dame Prue ‘is loved’ despite the pair not having met in real life, also admitted she watches Bake Off and finds it ‘creative and also so relaxing.’

An image of Debbie shocked Kate Garraway on Good Morning Britain this morning when the presenters were speaking about her upcoming action debut.

The 76-year-old singer’s age defying appearance left Kate gobsmacked, as she asked ‘Is that Blondie now?’ when an image of her aired in the ITV studio.

‘That’s Blondie now, yes,’ entertainment reporter Richard Arnold confirmed, prompting Kate to cry out in shock: ‘What the heck?’

Confused, co-presenter Adil Ray exclaimed: ‘What do you mean, what the heck?’

‘She looks amazing,’ Kate fawned, with Richard agreeing: ‘She has ripened beautifully.’

Kepler 62f will premiere this summer in London and will be available to watch on online platforms.

WWE superstar Liv Morgan has urged fans to be vigilant after a supporter ‘lost everything’ in a scam.

The 27-year-old star – who is part of the Raw roster in Vince McMahon’s company – admitted she felt ‘so sick’ after learning how someone was tricked into thinking they were helping her by a cruel catfish, and it cost them their house.

Taking to Twitter over the weekend, she said: ‘A man sold his home and lost everything thinking he was helping “me”. This has me so sick.

‘Please know I would never reach out to ask any of you for a single penny. I’m so sad. Please stop.’

Liv noted she’s been made aware of plenty of ‘horror stories’ with people tricking fans by creating ‘fake accounts and emails’ and contacting fans asking for money.

She wrote: ‘Guys I’ve been sent so many emails of horror stories about people making fake accounts and emails pretending to be me & asking for huge amounts of money.

‘This really makes me so sad. Please don’t use my name to con people out of their hard earned money. Please please please.’

Liv herself uses the handle @YaOnlyLivvOnce on both Instagram and Twitter, and she is verified on both social media platforms.

Although there are fan accounts showing their love, the star wants people to be wary of people pretending to be her with sinister motives.

On screen, Morgan has recently been part of a team with former Raw Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley, with the pair chasing the Women’s Tag Team Titles at WrestleMania 38.

They fell short at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas and again the following night on Raw, before getting another opportunity last night against the champs Sasha Banks and Naomi.

The duo lost once more, leading to Ripley attacking her partner after the match, branding her a failure and starting a new, personal rivalry.

WWE Hall of Famer Stone Cold Steve Austin returns at WrestleMania 38 in Dallas, Texas at the AT&T Stadium

WWE Hall of Famer ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin insists he will get involved with WrestleMania 39 in some capacity if Vince McMahon puts in the call.

The Texas Rattlesnake stunned fans by competing in his first match in 19 years against Kevin Owens at WrestleMania 38 in Dallas earlier this month, and he won’t rule out an appearance at next year’s edition in Hollywood.

Austin noted he never expected to be back in the ring this year, so he’s keeping his options open – even if he doesn’t think he’ll be working another match.

He laughed: ‘Well, for me to participate in WrestleMania 38, if you would’ve told me, “Hey man, you’re gonna be a part of WrestleMania 38. Not only that, you’re gonna main event night one”, I would’ve said you’re full of s**t and you’re crazy.

‘And there I was in Dallas, Texas, headlining main event on day one so, never say never, but I would really imagine that within the scope of that show, that’s gonna be a big show in a big time city and it’ll be a two-night event again so, I’m not — I’m sure I’m done wrestling per se, but as a part of WWE, I can’t imagine I would not be there in some capacity.

‘And I’m not booking myself on the show because I didn’t book myself on 38. That’s a Vince thing and I have a great relationship with him and if I get the call, I’ll be there.’

Speaking on the Brewbound Podcast, Stone Cold also gave an update on his physical status after his No Holds Barred match at WrestleMania 38, which saw him take a suplex onto concrete during a thrilling brawl.

He added: ‘Oh, I’m 100%. I picked up a little bit of a cold the other day but I’m back home in Nevada. Shoot, [on the Saturday], I was 100% and of course went back in action on Sunday, did a little extra physicality as a part of the show.

‘But, you know, it’s just an exciting time for me to back to a business that I really, really love and you know, I never thought I’d be back in a ring but, there we were headlining, main event for the — headlining WrestleMania for night one and it was just truly an honor to be out there.’

Austin’s opponent Owens re-signed with WWE towards the end of 2021, and while he didn’t know where he’d be a few months later, he was glad to see his WrestleMania moment turn out to be so special.

‘One thing’s unrelated to another – or it terms of me signing anyway,’ he exclusively told Metro.co.uk the day before their match.

‘But it’s obviously – to get to be the one to do it, there’s a lot of very talented and competent WWE superstars out there. For me to be the one in this situation, it’s a huge honour and I don’t take it lightly.’
