It’s been a long time coming, but UK fans of a hit medical drama can breathe a sigh of relief, as season 5 is finally available on Netflix.

The American medical drama, New Amsterdam which first hit our screens in 2018, wrapped its fifth season in January last year.

Now, after a very long year of waiting, it’s making waves in the UK after dropping on the streamer on December 31.

Already earning high praise online and landing the eighth spot on the list of the nation’s current top 10 shows on the platform, it’s obvious that fans couldn’t be happier to be snuggling up and binging the latest season.

Sharing their excitement on social media platform, X, @adrianm_14 said: ‘Last season of New Amsterdam is finally on Netflix’.

‘The final season of New Amsterdam is on Netflix’, @Adebimpee_ added along with two emojis depicting their upset.

While @PeterMawby51 announced they had been bingeing the show, writing: ‘Have you watches season 5 of New Amsterdam? It came on Netflix yesterday! I’m onto episode 4 already.’

Elsewhere, the show earned praise from longtime viewers, with @ShavinWijetunge calling it one of the ‘best dramas’ due to how it addresses real-life issues, including hospital budgets and administration.

‘There is a nice program on Netflix called New Amsterdam… it may not give the 100% accurate picture. But it is one of the best dramas about modern hospital administration. How individual public hospitals can operate. meeting budgets.’

New Amsterdam follows Dr Max Goodwin, played by Ryan Eggold and his team, including Janet Montgomery as Dr Lauren Bloom, as he deals with his new responsibilities as medical director at one of America’s oldest and most neglected public hospitals.

Often seen to be fighting against the medical system in order to offer everyone medical care, the series was different to the likes of its competitors, Grey’s Anatomy and The Resident, as it featured fewer character exits and major character deaths.

Unfortunately, with good news comes bad, as New Amsterdam’s fifth season is confirmed to be its final.

The series, based on the book Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital by Eric Manheimer, was intended to go on for longer, but due to bad ratings in season four, it never got the green light to wrap the way show creators intended.

Despite premiering on NBC with approximately eight million viewers tuning in, as the seasons continued, views became significantly less, and the season five finale saw only 2.83 million viewers.

Speaking to People in 2022 at the time of the cancellation, Lisa Katz, President, Scripted Programming, NBCUniversal Television & Streaming, said in a statement: ‘The story of Max Goodwin, and his never-ending commitment to patients at New Amsterdam, has been inspiring.’

She added: ‘We’re so grateful to David Schulner, Peter Horton, and our cast and crew for their incredible dedication, talent and collaboration.’

New Amsterdam is now streaming on Netflix.
