The original Batman TV show starring Adam West and Burt Ward turns 50 today.
The ABC programme was an instant hit with American viewers and soon the world fell in love with the caped superhero played by West, who is now 87.

A whopping 52 per cent of American TVs showed the first episode of Batman when it aired.
It aired twice a week on Wesnesdays and Thursdays – and the show spawned a film in the same year.
For the first time, West’s Batman also worked in close partnership with his loyal sidekick Robin, played by Ward who is now 70.
Ward has explained that the comedic tone of the show came down to the way the actors were directed – being told not to act, but to be themselves.
