So that’s it then. The BBC has officially announced the departure of Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat, who will leave after assembling a final series in 2017.
The immediate upshot of this means that there will be no new series of Doctor Who this year – we’ll get a Christmas special, and that’s all.
But should we really be upset?
For one thing, even if you’ve seen all the two hundred-odd TV stories up for grabs, there’s a wealth of spin-off material – far more than a single person could consume in the space of a year, or even two. There are books that cover every Doctor from First to Twelfth, many written by established Who contributors past and present.
Most notably, there’s a wealth of material from audio production company Big Finish. Previous Time Lords Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann all feature prominently.
