When it made its debut in the 1980s, Brookside was something fresh, exciting and groundbreaking.
The hard hitting soap paved the way for storylines tackling difficult social issues and the gritty plots from domestic abuse and rape to racism and drug use won critical acclaim.
Setting the trend was something it did well and is arguably most famous for screening the first lesbian kiss on British television. However, it began to lose its way towards the end of the 90s, relying on explosive plots and unrealistic twists to try and reverse it’s ailing ratings.
