A cross between The Wonder Years, Malcolm in the Middle and an I Love the 80s clip show, the hugely underrated family sitcom The Goldbergs returns for its third series tonight.
Chances are you may have missed its first two, thanks to E4’s decision to race through them over a two-month period last spring. So for the uninitiated, here’s a look at why you need the weird but loveable Goldbergs clan in your life.
1. It has the best smothering TV mother of all time
With her shoulder pads, bouffant hair and garish oversized sweaters, head of the household Beverly Goldberg has got the quintessential 80s look down to a tee.
She’s also got her own inspired terms of endearment (schmoopie boops, my delicious pumpkin loaf), a hilarious tendency to drop the (bleeped-out) F-bomb at inappropriate moments, and an incessant need for snuggies.
