Who can tune into The Big Bang Theory without frantically trying to sing along to the supersonic little jingle?
‘Our whole universe was in a hot, dense state, Then nearly fourteen billion years ago expansion started, wait’. (It’s now stuck in your head, right?)
The upbeat, catchy tune has been the show’s theme song ever since the pilot.
But can you really call yourself a fan of The Big Bang Theory if you don’t know who sings the theme song or know every single word of the lyrics?
Let us fill in the blanks so you can make Sheldon proud with your knowledge…
Who sings the Big Bang theme?
The Big Bang Theory theme song – which is called simply Big Bang Theory Theme – was written and performed by Canadian alternative rock band Barenaked Ladies.
Big Bang producers Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady had attended one of the band’s LA gigs and then asked Ed Robertson, who is the co-lead singer, to write a fun tune for their show after hearing him perform a freestyle rap about the origins of the universe.
It turned out that Robertson had just finished reading science author Sion Singh’s book Big Bang. Clearly it was meant to be.
The track Robertson ended up writing for the show describes the history of the universe and its formation, perfectly setting the scene for Sheldon, Leonard and co’s shenanigans.
While it’s a song loved by TBBT fans, Robertson reportedly ended up being sued by his band member Steven Page for allegedly not giving him the agreed percentage of proceeds.

Why not sing the correct words for a change? You’ve got half of the final series left so brush up on the lyrics and impress your friends right here:
Our whole universe was in a hot, dense state
Then nearly fourteen billion years ago expansion started, wait
The earth began to cool, the autotrophs began to drool
Neanderthals developed tools
We built a wall (we built the pyramids)
Math, science, history, unraveling the mysteries
That all started with the big bang! Hey!
Since the dawn of man is really not that long
As every galaxy was formed in less time than it takes to sing this song
A fraction of a second and the elements were made
The bipeds stood up straight, the dinosaurs all met their fate
They tried to leap but they were late
And they all died (they froze their asses off)
The oceans and Pangea, see ya wouldn’t wanna be ya
Set in motion by the same big bang!
It all started with the big bang!
It’s expanding ever outward but one day
It will cause the stars to go the other way
Collapsing ever inward, we won’t be here, it won’t be hurt
Our best and brightest figure that it’ll make an even bigger bang!
Australopithecus would really have been sick of us
Debating how we’re here, they’re catching deer (we’re catching viruses)
Religion or astronomy (Descartes or Deuteronomy)
It all started with the big bang!
Music and mythology, Einstein and astrology
It all started with the big bang!
It all started with the big bang!
