This Time With Alan Partridge continued with an episode dedicated to the passing of fictional former This Time host John Baskell.
What started off as Alan (hilariously) trying to make himself the centre of attention turned into a spot on comment on the current social climate in the wake of #MeToo.
Undoubtedly there will be people who would hated it being so on the nose, but they’re likely the same ones who moan about ‘PC culture’ when something bad is called out.
But there were still a lot of laughs to be had, and we’ve pulled out a handful of the best quotes.
1.
[On John Baskell’s death] ‘Now you can tweet a message from wherever you are in the country to help us get a picture of just how many of you he touched…Remember of course to use the hashtag ThisTime.’
‘Or if you prefer, simply hashtag JohnGone’
2.
‘”And it seemed to me you lived your life like a candle in the wind”. So said Elton John about Marilyn Monroe, Princess Diana, the list goes on.’
3.
‘Such a load of toss. He was just a bore who ate too much sirloin until his colon threw in the towel.’
4.
[On tweets paying tribute to John] ‘He’d be scrolling in his grave.’
‘Well no, he’s still in the morgue.’
‘Yes, keeping cool!’
5.
‘He cared so much about the homeless, he used to bring them off in the street.’
6.
‘You know Radio 1?’
‘Yes.’
‘Well that’s a radio station and so is North Norfolk Digital’
7.
‘A lot of people look at you Sam and think, “How does he do it?” To go from nature programmes to one of the biggest gigs on the BBC History team. That’s quite a feat.
‘And, little known fact, your father was head of Factual Programming until recently wasn’t he?’
8.
‘It started off as a vase but by the time he finished fondling me it was a sort of very wide ashtray’.
9.
‘Yeah you cock a snook at bad news don’t you?
‘I do, I’m a snook cocker.’
‘I’m sure there’s an anagram in there somewhere’
10.
‘What’s fascinating about history is that, unlike bread in a bakery or love in a marriage, it’s never going to run out.’
11.
‘As anyone who has played squash against Adrian Chiles will tell you, guts and aggression are no match for skill and tactics. Unless his opponent’s had a big breakfast.’
12.
‘They set up camp here on the Heath, a place for the pooped troops to regroup and recoup.’
This Time With Alan Partridge airs Mondays at 9.30pm on BBC One
