Line Of Duty showrunner Jed Mercurio had made plans to bring back Tony Gates (Lennie James) to the drama.
Gates was the first officer investigated for corruption by AC-12 way back in series one. When the net closed in on him, Gates threw himself in front of a moving vehicle to escape arrest and was killed.
Despite his death, Mercurio has been teasing James with how his character could be resurrected, but keeps scrapping the scenes.
Speaking to Lorraine at the Baftas on Sunday night, the actor said: ‘Every single time I see Jed he talks about how he’s just written the scene that’s brought me back to Line Of Duty.
‘Then the next time I see him, he said, “Yeah it was rubbish, so I got rid of it.”‘
He also told Digital Spy: ‘That’s what he does with people. So he might do it again, he might not, I don’t know. You’ll have to ask Jed.’
Line Of Duty series five came to a surprising conclusion as the team continued to hunt down ‘H’, who they believed was a senior ranking officer at the head of an organised crime group.
But in the finale it was revealed that H is actually four people, with one person still left to be found.
The 90-minute episode drew the biggest audience of the year so far with 9.1million viewers tuning into watch AC-12 try and hunt down corrupt officers.
Arnott and his senior colleague Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) got their boss Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) off the book by revealing Gill Biggeloe (Polly Walker) to be corrupt.
The episode also threw us a massive curveballl by revealing H – previously believed to be one corrupt senior police officer – is actually four people.
DI Matthew ‘Dot’ Cottan (Craig Parkinson), Gill and ACC Hilton (Paul Higgins) make up three out of the four with one still at large that AC-12 have to track down.
Line Of Duty is set to return to BBC One.
