Katie Leung, the actress who played Harry Potter’s love interest Cho Chang, has said she wants to avoid becoming a ‘Chinese stereotype’ in her work.
Talking to Newsbeat as her new show One Child launched on BBC2, she said: ‘It would be really nice to play something closer to home.
‘Just because [the characters I’ve played] have been race specific doesn’t mean that I’m playing this one-dimensional character.’
Her new role is a chance for Katie to showcase her talents as she tackles the difficult subjects of crime, corruption and China’s controversial one-child policy.
She plays a Chinese woman who was adopted by a British family, but returns to China to help her birth mother after her biological brother is wrongfully imprisoned for murder.
