Last week, ex-EastEnders star Phil Daniels claimed the show had “run its course” and needs to be axed by the BBC. He’s spot on, says Ian Green.

Earlier this year the BBC screened a programme titled ‘30 Years of EastEnders’. I took this as a taunt. How have we allowed this moribund dirge of a soap opera to carry on for so long?

When the soap first hit our screens in 1985, it was groundbreaking stuff – gritty and realistic, highlighting topics like teen pregnancy and homosexuality that were then considered taboo.
