Samira Wiley has blown minds after revealing that she’s the aunt of When They See Us star Asante Blackk and, frankly, we’re not quite sure how we didn’t see it.
The Orange Is The New Black actress shared an Instagram photo of Asante, 17, on the red carpet looking dapper in his suit at the Emmys 2019 on Sunday night.
In the caption, Samira, 32, posted a sweet caption celebrating Asante’s achievement of becoming one of the youngest Emmy nominees ever in the awards’ 71-year history.
Asante plays Kevin Richardson in the critically-acclaimed Netflix series, which tells the real life story of the five men – known as the Central Park 5 – who were wrongfully imprisoned for the rape of female jogger Trisha Meili.
‘Shine, BABY! Auntie loves you!! #nofiltercuzhehandsome#Emmysyoungestnominee #iknowhim [sic],’ Samira wrote.
Well, fans had to do a double take after realising Samira called herself Asante’s ‘auntie’, clearly not realising that they were related.
But many thought Asante had looked familiar while binge-watching When They See Us earlier this year, but it’s surprising none of us put two and two together given he and Samira pretty much have the same face.
Reacting to the family tree revelation, one of Samira’s Instagram followers commented: ‘It all makes sense now! I was like he looks just like Samira Wiley! This is awesome!’
‘I looked fast and thought it was you! What a handsome boy!’ another stunned follower said.
Just as shocked as the rest of us, one other fan chimed in: ‘Holy f**k, before reading the caption i was positive it was just you through some weird ass filter hahaha [sic].’
Amazed by the resemblance, another said: ‘There is the resemblance! I knew he reminded me of someone! Wow, the talent.’
That’s a lot of Netflix money in one family.
So how are they related? Asante is the son of Samira’s sister Aiyana Ma’at while his father’s name is Ayize.
While Asante may be new in Hollywood, he’s quickly catching up to his aunt’s fame as she won an Emmy for outstanding guest actress in a drama series for her appearance in Handmaid’s Tale back in 2017.
It was a successful night Ava Duvernay’s heart wrenching drama, When They See Us, which won the lead actor in a limited series or movie award for Jharrel Jerome who played Korey Wise.
When They See Us is available to stream on Netflix.
