The Circle’s second series is proving to be a hit with viewers.
There’s been Richard Madeley twerking. There’s been newly-christened national treasures. And there’s been Fatboy Slim’s son coming out.
Through all of this, there’s been a funny, warm narrator making witty observations. So… who is she?
Who narrates The Circle on Channel 4?
The voice over on The Circle is Sophie Willan.
The British comedian was born in Bolton and spent time in foster care as a child.
Her upbringing with a parent addicted to drugs and becoming an escort for a while helped shape the content of her own comedy shows.
She told the Guardian she was given advice to ‘find a way to make it funny in five minutes that my mum was a heroin addict, without freaking people out.’
Apart from being the narrator of The Circle, what else has she done?
Being The Circle’s voice-over isn’t all Sophie has been up to.
Her acclaimed BBC Radio 4 series, Sophie Willan’s Guide to Normality, has had two successful seasons so far.
TV appearances have included Live At The Comedy Store (Comedy Central), As Yet Untitled (Dave) and The One Show (BBC One).
She had her own stand up show, On Record, in 2015 at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. This was based on her experiences growing up in and out of the care system and working as an escort.
Escorting helped fund her showbiz career, and she told the Guardian: ‘It shouldn’t be made a big thing of. It’s just a bit of who I am.’
The follow-up show, Branded, was a huge success for Sophie, winning her a Herald Angel Award and a nomination for Best Show at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards in 2017.
She later took the show to a three-week run at Soho Theatre and a month long run in Australia’s Melbourne Comedy Festival.
The Circle airs weeknights on Channel 4 at 10pm.
