Game Of Thrones’ fifth season went out with a bang, as Mother’s Mercy appeared to kill off six characters but confirmed the return of another from a supposedly fatal wound, reminding us that all is not always what it seems.

Much of the episode’s death count revolved around Winterfell, as Stannis’s decision to sacrifice Shireen backfired spectacularly. Half his army turncoat, Selyse hangs herself from a tree and even Melisandre abandons him.
Stannis presses on regardless, only to be routed by the Boltons’ forces before reaching Winterfell’s walls. Brienne finds a defeated Stannis post-battle and sentences him to death for Renly’s murder.
