Adventure Time will return for four one-hour specials on HBO Max, as the streaming service bolsters its animation line-up.
After the show came to an end in September 2018, the madcap adventures of Jake and Finn will continue for a miniseries of four specials debuting exclusively on streaming platform HBO Max in 2020.
Sarah Aubrey, head of original content at HBO Max, said: ‘The enchanted world of Adventure Time has mesmerised viewers and critics alike as Finn and Jake right wrongs and battle evil.
‘The addition of these specials to the HBO Max kids and family programming line-up is sure to make kids everywhere say “Slam-bam-in-a-can.”’
The new specials, collectively titled Adventure Time: Distant Lands, will tell several tales within the Land of Ooo, culminating in a reunion adventure starring Finn and Jake.
Adventure: Distant Lands is produced by Cartoon Network Studios, although it’s unclear if creator Pendleton Ward will be working on the new miniseries.
The first two episodes are titled BMO and Obsidian, with the former revolved around Jake and Finn’s adorable robot buddy, while the latter features Marceline and Princess Bubblegum as they venture to the Glass Kingdom to prevent a disaster.
Episode three, Wizard City, is an origin story for dark sorcerer Peppermint Butler, while the finale Together Again will bring back Jake and Finn for the ‘most important adventure of their lives.’
Adventure Time concluded on Cartoon Network after ten seasons, becoming a big ratings success and earning critical acclaim – including eight Primetime Emmy Awards.
The announcement follows a number of big deals for HBO Max, becoming the new home of Sesame Street and bagging the entire Studio Ghibli movie collection.
It’s unclear if HBO Max will be heading to the UK, although considering HBO content is usually made available through Sky Atlantic and NOW TV over here, it’s likely we’ll see shows available there.
Adventure Time: Distant Lands will arrive on HBO Max in 2020.
