Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield were left in hysterics during a chaotic interview with Miriam Margolyes.
The actress was on This Morning to promote Sydney & The Old Girl, a play she is appearing in.
Talk turned to Miriam’s other project Call The Midwife, which she has joined as Sister Mildred.
Phil let slip that the next episode is set in the Outer Hebrides and mentioned that Miriam can do a pretty spot on Scottish accent.
‘You actually did about four minutes of our research chat with our team with your Scottish accent,’ the presenter said.
Slipping into it effortlessly she admitted it was ‘sort of showing off’.
She went on: ‘I’ve heard it all my life. I grew up listening to that sound. It’s a particular sound. I love doing it and feeling those memories of my father who I adored.’
Phil mentioned that Miriam was told her accent sounded similar to the one put on by Maggie Smith in the Harry Potter films as Professor McGonagall.
‘I think my Scottish accent is better than hers. I do. I know what she was trying for. We’re Glasgow and she was trying for Edinburgh,’ Miriam said, ‘not that I’m rubbishing Maggie Smith because she’s a great lady. I f**king scared of her actually.’
Miriam mouthed the swear word – it is day time TV and way before the watershed after all – and made Holly and Phil collapse on the sofa in fits of laughter.
‘You can’t be scared of her, not you!’ Holly said.
‘Of course, she’s quite something,’ Miriam explained, ‘but she is a great ornament to our profession and we’re lucky to have her around. Don’t tell her what I said!’
‘Apart from the fact you’re on the telly but it’s okay,’ Phil told her, to which she replied: ‘I forget that.’
This Morning airs weekdays from 10.30am on ITV.
