Downton Abbey sounds very different when performed in American accents

One of the great things about Downton Abbey is the sheer Britishness of it all – right down to those cut-glass accents.

But just how might the Sunday night small screen staple sound if it were set across the pond? Well, very different indeed, if this clip from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is anything to go by.

Because when the presenter played host to cast members Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery and Allen Leech, he couldn’t resist the chance to have them re-enact a scene – in American accents.

‘One of the things that, I suspect, makes the show seem so alluring and seem in some ways like a fairy tale to us in the United States is just how plummy your accents are,’ he explained to the trio.
