Game Of Thrones will be ruined if Jon Snow and Daenerys end up together

Like, it’s cute, but it’ll ruin the show (Picture: HBO)

The end of Game Of Thrones is nigh and I have but one request from George RR Martin, David Benioff and DB Weiss: please, for the love of Gendry, do not have the main takeaway being Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen ending up happily ever after.

It’ll ruin the show, I’m telling you now.

The series has been built over the past near-decade as a blood-thirsty death-grasp for the Iron Throne and it cannot end like a romantic drama.

There is no Cameron Diaz/Jude Law finale here – we came for a sword-wielding (or dragon-wielding, whatever) victor and we won’t go home until we get it.

Jon Snow and Daenerys
Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen have been given a hall pass to crack on with their incestuous relationship (Picture: HBO)

Yes, I’ll admit their apparent lust, albeit a little incestuous, is cute. It’s adorable. It was a welcome change from the normal emotionless storylines and beheadings. There is always time for a little kissy-kissy on the battlefield. But it cannot be the saviour of the series.

Yes, I just said kissy-kissy, deal with it.

Anyway, I conducted an in-depth survey with myself and 100% of respondents agreed that making the final curtain all about Jon and Daenerys falling in love would ruin the whole prior seven seasons.

This survey group evidently feels strongly about the main issue at hand here: keeping Game Of Thrones Game Of Thrones.

Jon Snow in Game of Thrones
Our faces if the ending is about them living happily ever after (Picture: HBO)

Not game of bones (hey-ooo).

Why do I feel so strongly about this? Glad you asked.

Mainly, it’s because Daenerys is a boss and by making her final push about Jon Snow is just annoying and a disservice to the storyline of both characters, so expertly carved out to this point.

But my main gripe is the potential blow to female empowerment projected on screen.

What does it mean for all those little girls watching (who should definitely NOT be watching Game Of Thrones) to see the most bada** of all, Khaleesi, sacrifice the throne, or just want a big ol’ smooch from a man instead of the glory she’s been searching for ever since old mate Viserys had that molten lava splish-splashed on his noggin in series one?

Game of Thrones,Series 5,Episode 9,The Dance of Dragons Clarke, Emilia as Daenerys Targaryen. Drogon
Like, come on, she’s got dragons (Picture: HBO)

Emilia Clarke’s character (and Emilia in turn) became a shining beacon for all those searching for some real female grit and gall on our tellies.

She tamed the mighty Khal Drogo after the very unfeminist act of forced marriage, took over the Dothraki, asserted herself Khaleesi and Mother Of Dragons and basically gathered a literal army of followers.

Having three dragons certainly didn’t hurt, either.

One only needs to see the number of braids she’s currently rocking to understand how tough, brave and smart on the battlefield she is.

She’s so close to the Iron Throne, to be usurped by a storyline that takes that away is a discredit to the waves she’s made.

And, let’s be honest, we’re also cheering for a return of Khal. Because that will be anything but a soppy addition, while allowing Dany to continue her bossing.

Daenerys and Drogo Game of Thrones
We’d love nothing more than for Drogo to come back (Picture: HBO)

If you want a love story true to GOT, Drogo and Khaleesi is where it’s at. Jon and Daenerys? They’re fire and ice – it’s just not going to work.

Still, now that it’s pretty much been revealed Jon is the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark, it means he has a claim to the Iron Throne.

So while I’m over here so busy trying to get these two to concentrate on the job at hand and keep their bedroom eyes to themselves, a much larger battle may be at hand.

Jon versus Daenerys? Now we’re talking.

I’m prepared for the bloodshed, you see – which may be where my anxiety lies. To all of a sudden have a rom-com on our hands after witnessing the Red Wedding? It’s just not right.

I’ve become accustomed to losing the things I hold so dear on this show, so this season I’m expecting George to come in all dragons blazing to tear sh*t up before the final episode.

Before we might have begged for a love story between the strong-willed Dany and the pretty-much-zombie Jon. But now? We want closure on the Iron Throne. And for Cersei to get her comeuppance.

We’ve gone through way too much to this point to have things end on a fluffy Lord Of The Rings cloud.

Am I grim and cynical in wanting the status quo of the show to keep ticking, without the interference of feelings?

Perhaps, but after all – winter is coming. And it’s cold in here.

But if you touch Sansa, George, by God I’ll be having words.

Five other Peppa Pig controversies as show faces sexism row over use of the word ‘fireman’

Peppa Pig and controversies the show has caused
Peppa Pig is no stranger to a spot of controversy (Picture: Channel 5)

Who’d have thought that an innocent five minute episode of Peppa Pig could possibly cause a controversy?

Because that’s just what’s happened after a 2009 episode of the show went and upset the London Fire Brigade with its use of the word ‘fireman’.

The episode in question sees Peppa and little brother George join Miss Rabbit’s Mummies’ Fire Engine Service – with the narrator saying at one point that ‘Mummy Pig is dressed as a fireman’.

All of which has led the LFB to flag up the moment in their #FireFightingSexism campaign – accusing the show of using ‘out of date stereotypical gender specific wording’.

It’s not the first time that the massively popular show – which airs on Nick Jr and Channel 5 in the UK – has caused a spot of bother though.

Let’s remind ourselves of some other occasions when Peppa left everyone a bit hot under the collar…

Peppa vs Road Safety

The character got into hot water in 2010 when parents raised concerns over scenes in the car where she was not seen wearing a seatbelt – with some complaining that their own children had refused to wear seatbelts because Peppa didn’t.

Peppa and George Pig not wearing seatbelts in an episode of the show
Peppa and George’s seatbelts were missing in early episodes (Picture: Channel 5)

Animators Astley Baker Davies admitted later they were ‘very naive’ when making the early shows – and has introduced them into the show since the outcry.

Mr Skinny Legs

This infamous 2004 episode of the show, in which Peppa and George befriend a smiling spider, was removed from the airwaves in Australia because of the scene in which Daddy Pig assures a scared Peppa that ‘spiders can’t hurt you’ before tucking the arachnid into bed. Not a great idea Down Under it seems, home to such scary eight-legged beasties as funnel web spiders and redback spiders – whose bite is poisonous and can prove fatal to humans.

Gabriella Goat

An episode of the show in which the family visit Italy and meet a character called Gabriella Goat proved none too popular with Italian businesswoman Gabriella Capra – whose surname means ‘goat’ in Italian – who sued the makers after claiming she had been teased by friends and colleagues over the episode.

Peppa vs the NHS

Regular viewers will almost certainly be familiar with the show’s cheery medic Dr Brown Bear, who’s fantastic at curing colds or weird spots – and did indeed take care of the latter in one episode during a home visit to the Pig household.

Unfortunately for him his methods came into question in the British Medical Journal, in a light-hearted piece which suggested the good doctor might cause problems for GP surgeries if parents expect the same treatment for their own children every time they have a minor ailment. And don’t get them started on the fact he prescribes medicine for what was probably ‘something viral’.

Peppa banned in China

Peppa and George Pig
Peppa’s faced a ban in China (Picture: Channel 5)

The character has received an outright ban in China after taking on a darker meaning, with Peppa ending up featuring in gang-related rap videos and tattoos.

Yup, this may seem hard to believe, but Peppa is reportedly seen as a symbol of rebellion in China – with the ban being imposed the loveable porker ended up all too frequently on the Chinese video-sharing site Douyin. ‘When a lovely character like Peppa is being used by younger people and sometimes not so young people to pursue ideas and articulate ideas that are forbidden in China, then Peppa Pig becomes politically incorrect and she will have to be taken off the screen,’ Steve Tsang from the School of Oriental and African Studies told ITV News.

The Friends cast are divided over a reunion: Here’s who’s said what

Friends is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and naturally fans are still holding out hope that Joey, Monica, Phoebe, Rachel, Chandler and Ross will come back into our lives for a reboot.

Although showrunner Marta Kauffman recently shut down the idea of a comeback, saying that doing one could disappoint fans, some members of the cast are still keen.

Here’s our rundown on where Matt LeBlanc, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, Lisa Kudrow and David Schwimmer stand on the whole shebang.

Matt LeBlanc

Unfortunately Matt LeBlanc is not down for a reunion, like, ever.

The 51-year-old actor, who played lovable fool Joey Tribbiani told Femail Magazine last year: ‘I don’t want to do it – simple.

‘People want to know what happened to them. But it was about a finite period in a person’s life after college, before you settle down and start a family.

‘To go back and revisit all these years later, well I don’t know what the story would be now. They would all have moved on from that period so it just wouldn’t be the same.’

Jennifer Aniston is keen for a Friends reboot (Picture: NBC)

Jennifer Aniston

Luckily for us, Jennifer is up for a reboot – and often fantasises about them.

‘Before that show ended, people were asking if we were coming back. Courteney [Cox] and Lisa [Kudrow] and I talk about it. I fantasize about it,’ she told InStyle in August.

Getting us all pumped for a possible Rachel Green revival, she added:‘It really was the greatest job I ever had.

‘I don’t know what it would look like today, but you never know. So many shows are being successfully rebooted.’

Courteney Cox

Like Jennifer, Courteney is also game for reprising her role of Monica Geller.

However, Courteney isn’t so sure reviving Friends would actually work, telling People last year: ‘I don’t know if there’s a way to redo it.

‘I just don’t see it happening. Even though I would do anything to be in a room with all of those people acting and having a great time. But I don’t see it happening.’

Matthew Perry

Matthew Perry dashed all our hopes and dreams that we’d ever see him back as Chandler Bing back in 2017.

Two years ago the star, who recently reassured fans after he was kicked out of therapy, revealed the idea of a Friends reunion gave him nightmares.

When I’m asleep, I have this nightmare that we do Friends again and nobody cares,’ Matthew admitted at the time.

‘We do a whole series, we come back, and nobody cares about it. So if anybody asks me, I’m gonna say no.’

Lisa Kudrow

Joining the rest of the gals, Lisa Kudrow has confessed that she’d want to reprise her role of Phoebe Buffay if a reunion did happen.

Buuuut, just like Courteney, she’s not convinced that would ever go ahead.

‘I would do it. I wouldn’t be the one not to do it,’ Lisa said in an interview in 2017.

‘Marta Kauffman, one the creators of the show, also said, “It’s not happening”. ‘Don’t blame me. I’m not the one responsible if there’s no Friends reunion.’

David Schwimmer

David Schwimmer is pretty much on the fence about the whole thing, and given that he didn’t actually like Marcel the monkey, it’s hardly surprising.

The actor, who played Ross Geller, told Megyn Kelly on Today two years ago: ‘I just don’t know if I want to see all of us with like crutches, like walkers.’

Fair enough.

Drag Race’s Honey Davenport is Lee Daniels’ cousin – and they have some exciting projects in the works

Honey Davenport is now and forever part of the RuPaul’s Drag Race family, after she competed on season 11 of the hit show.

But even before she strutted into the workroom, she had plenty of ties to entertainment royalty.

The 32-year-old revealed to Metro.co.uk that she has a number of projects in the pipeline with her cousin, Empire co-creator, producer, director and writer, Lee Daniels.

Speaking after her elimination in episode three of season 11, Diva Worship, Honey teased her upcoming projects, saying: ‘I went to school for musical theatre, so there’ll be more acting and film work. My cousin is a very prominent Hollywood director and producer, Lee Daniels, and we’ve got some projects in line together. That’s all I can say about those so far.

Lee Daniels
Lee is working on possible projects with Honey (Picture: Slaven Vlasic/Getty Images for Steinberg Playwright Awards)

‘I’ve got so much in store for the world. On RuPaul’s Drag Race, y’all just got a taste of Honey, and when y’all are ready for a whole spoonful, you’ll get it.’

Considering Daniels is the man behind Empire and the Oscar-winning movies Precious and Monster’s Ball, we see big things in Honey’s future.

The New York based queen became the first contestant in Drag Race herstory to be voted off after a six-way lip sync, when Honey’s entire team landed in the bottom thanks to their disastrous Mariah Carey worship skit.

Ru deemed Honey the loser of the six queens performing to Jennifer Lopez’s Waiting For Tonight, and thus she exited the contest.

Honey was conceptual with her looks (Picture: VH1)

Honey told us: ‘It was terrifying. It would have been much easier to take just one girl down. But I can go down as the only queen in Drag Race herstory who took five girls on in a lip sync. That’s quite legendary. If you want to send Honey Davenport home, you better have five other girls!

‘Performing is what I do, so I thought if I ever ended up in the bottom, it would be my time to shine. But when you have all those people on stage with you at the same time, it’s harder to shine through. I gave it my all, and I didn’t shine through, and that’s ok.’

While on the show, Honey showed that despite winning 18 pageant crowns, she was no pageant queen, instead choosing to promote issues close to her heart with her looks; her exit look was a symbol of those lost to gun violence.

Honey had plenty more to say with her looks – and she plans on showing them off, even though she’s left the competition.

‘I’m going to release all of them on social media as each episode airs. And it won’t just be pictures. I’m a recording artist, I’ve been making music for about a decade, and my latest single The Hive was based off my entrance look. I’m making a whole visual EP right now – it’s not just music, it’s commentary on what it’s like to be a person of colour who is queer in America right now. It also touches on what it must feel like to be a woman in this environment, what it must feel to be a race of people who are either fetishised or desexualised in society. And I can use all of those beautiful concepts that I didn’t get to show on the main stage.

‘This show is given me a door to people looking at me. Before the show started, I had 10,000 followers – I have 70,000 now. I can talk to so many more people about the issues going on in the world right now, and I’m ready.’

RuPaul’s Drag Race continues at 9pm ET/PT on Thursdays on VH1, and drops on Netflix the following morning.

Stranger Things drops cryptic rat teaser for season 3 and fans believe it reveals a trailer release date

What does the new teaser mean? (Picture: Netflix)

Netflix has released a cryptic teaser for Stranger Things season three, with fans speculating it could point towards a full trailer release date.

The show’s third season is set to arrive July this year with a fresh summer 1985 setting, with only secretive mall teasers and the episode titles released so far.

A new clip, however, has since released on the official Stranger Things social accounts, showing a swarm of rats rush into an abandoned warehouse.

The caption on the post reads: ‘It’s almost feeding time.’

So what does this all mean? There’s been speculation around rats playing a role in the third outing following episode titles like The Mall Rats and The Bite, with signs pointing towards them potentially carrying the disease left in the tunnels under Hawkins.

Some fans have also noted how World Rat Day takes place on Thursday 4 April, with many claiming this could be when we see a full trailer for the third season.

So is World Rat Day about to get the celebration it deserves? It’s been a long overdue, quite frankly.

Stranger Things is set to introduce new additions to the cast for the next outing, including Cary Elwes as ‘handsome, slick, and sleazy’ Mayor Kline, and Jake Busey who plays a journalist with ‘questionable morals and a sick sense of humour’.

Stranger Things season three releases on Netflix 4 July 2019.

Will Bran Stark be revealed as the Night King on Game of Thrones?

$

Game of Thrones' Bran Stark next to an image of the The Night King
Is that similar bone structure just a coincidence? (Picture: HBO)

The internet has long been riddled with Game of Thrones fan theories – one the most prominent of those being that Bran Stark could actually be the Night King.

Since the teaser for season eight came out in January, those who think that Bran is the Night King have been bolstered by the fact that while all of the other Stark siblings appeared in it, confronting their statue likenesses in the Stark family crypt, Bran was nowhere to be seen.

Not only that, but as the Three-eyed Raven, Bran effectively has the power to travel through time and jump into other creature’s bodies, which got people thinking that he could end up inhabiting the body of the Night King.

However, the theory isn’t without its holes.

While Bran’s new emotional (or rather, emotionless) state has left him more or less dead inside, the GOT scriptwriters would still have to go a long way to make Bran’s transformation from good to the ultimate baddie convincing.

Isaac Hempstead-Wright, who’s played Bran since the show began, has outright called the theory ‘cheesy’.

He told RadioTimes.com: ‘I mean it’s quite an interesting theory, the Night King one. I just think it seems a bit obvious. A bit cheesy.’

As for why he wasn’t in the teaser, he said: ‘Yeah, I don’t know what the f**k that’s about. I actually don’t know why I’m not in that.

‘We were looking at it and I was like, “Why am I not in this? All the other Starks are in it.” So I dunno – ask my agent. Get a look in there.’

On the other hand, he would say that, wouldn’t he? As a member of the cast, he’s tasked with keeping the shows secrets just like the rest of them.

After Kit Harrington lied over and over again about Jon Snow’s death, it’s safe to say we’ve been burned before.

At the end of the day, we’ll just have to wait and see. In the meantime, the bookies odds could give a good indication as to which way the figurative wind will blow…

The odds that Bran Stark is the Night King

After months of speculation on the subject Bran Stark is a 4/6 odds-on favourite to be revealed as the Night King, the leader of the White Walkers.

Jon Snow comes in second at 4/1 – that’s three times less likely than Bran. If nothing else, it would make one hell of a twist.

Next in the running is Baby Sam, son of Gilly and adoptive son of Samwell Tarly, with odds at 7/1, followed by Bronn at 9/1,  Rhaegar Targaryen and the Many-Faced God, both at 12/1.

Odds courtesy of Paddy Power.

Alan Partridge’s Irish lookalike leaves viewers howling by singing Come Out, Ye Black And Tans on the BBC

This Time With Alan Partridge delivered arguably its best episode yet last night (18 March), with a little help from Irish rebellion sing-alongs.

Back in 1972 when The Wolfe Tones released Come Out, Ye Black And Tans, the idea of it being aired on BBC primetime was unimaginable – being a song referring to the brutal actions of the British paramilitary police force in Ireland throughout the 1920s.

Well Alan Partridge’s new parody magazine show drudged up that history for a new audience. In the latest episode we meet Martin Brennan, an Irish farmer who is also an Alan Partridge impersonator.

Alan wasn’t sure what to think (Picture: BBC)

With Steve Coogan playing both roles, Brennan was generally unfazed by the show going off around him, and didn’t even know who Partridge was in the beginning.

Speaking to the host, Brennan said: ‘I didn’t know who you were. My cousin said you’d be as well being a Martin Brennan impersonator in Sligo.’

Brennan didn’t give a damn (Picture: BBC)

As the show came to a close, Brennan launched into Come Out, Ye Black And Tans with full gusto, turning the air into a mixture of awkward and hilarious.

‘Oh my god. That was like an advert for the IRA,’ Partridge remarked.

And people lapped it up.

Incredible.

It seems Partridge will be sticking around the BBC for a while yet too, having been picked up for another series separate to This Time.

This Time With Alan Partridge airs on BBC One Mondays at 9.30pm.

Gotham wasted a great opportunity in Harvey Dent and, frankly, we were robbed

$

Harvey Dent, Gotham
We were robbed of Harvey Dent in Gotham and we deserved so much more (Picture: Fox)

It’s fair to say Gotham has had a lot more hits than misses over its run so far – especially when it’s come to introducing many of the evil-doers who will go on to make up Batman’s infamous gallery of rogues.

With such a passionate fanbase, incredible source material and a number of live action and animated adaptations to delve into, the team behind the show faced a mammoth task to not only do the character justice and keep everyone happy, but to do so in a way that felt unique and exciting rather than predictable ode to the DC Comics.

Obviously, that meant some creative decisions had to be made. For some of them, it really worked out for the better. Edward Nigma and Oswald Cobblepot – The Riddler and Penguin, as they will become – are possibly the best examples of benefiting from this, as their stories have felt natural, deep and organic, not simply guided by their past portrayals.

However, it’s got to be said that Gotham hasn’t always succeeded in this, and one character in particular has been really let down by the show – albeit for a combination of reasons. But come on – Harvey Dent deserved more.

Just to get it out of the way, here’s a quick fact. Despite being a recurring character in season one and a main in season two, Harvey Dent is listed as appearing just six times of those two seasons, with the other 13 listings on IMDB noted simply as ‘credit only’. And honestly, we’re surprised it was as many as six.

It’s a shame, because – like many moments across Gotham’s run – there was a lot of promise and excitement when he first appeared – his first episode was literally named Harvey Dent.

In a brilliant bit of foreshadowing, we saw Assistant District Attorney Harvey Dent with half of his profile in the shadows, subtly hinting at his villainous future as Two Face, one of the Caped Crusader’s best-known foes. But for all intents and purposes, that’s where the character development kind of stopped.

Harvey Dent, Gotham
We didn’t even get a coin flip (Picture: Fix)

Look, don’t get us wrong: Gotham only has so much time, and so many characters to fit in. We get that. And we also accept that, even with bosses taking some creative license with the timelines, it would be a bit of a stretch to see Two Face’s transformation happen in a Batman prequel.

Harvey and Bruce Wayne were allies, with the former becoming somewhat of a hero before he is horrifically disfigured in an accident which leads to his turn to the dark side and a life of crime. So, no, it wouldn’t really have made much sense to see the character’s full arc play out on the show.

But, really – we deserved more.

There was some hope when actor Nicholas D’Agosto was given the bump up to main cast for the second season, but he just made a handful of appearances before disappearing from Gotham, never to be heard from again. For a show that has typically paid off with patience and perseverance, it would’ve been nice to get a bit more from Harvey, or at least to let him shine as the beacon of hope fans knew him to be.

A few more hints here and there – flipping a coin? – would’ve been great, and given he’s one of Batman’s more tragic villains where was the spotlight to set up his subsequent demise? The show has blurred timelines before, so even more interactions between Bruce and Harvey – however fleeting they might’ve been – would still have been preferable to seeing the character essentially get shafted.

We’re not saying we had to witness Harvey becoming the villain we know he will be. But for such a popular character, the man who will become Two Face deserved a little more than an early cameo and unexplained exit.

There are two sides to every coin, and for a show as wonderful, detailed and rewarding a Gotham, this was a misstep.

Gotham airs Thursdays on Fox in the US and is expected to come to E4 in the UK later this year.

Game Of Thrones star Kit Harington admits he’ll ‘never be happy’ with 70 per cent of Jon Snow scenes

The actor has spoke candidly about playing Jon Snow (Picture: HBO)

Kit Harington has expressed how he’ll never be happy with 70 per cent of his scenes from Game Of Thrones, in a new revealing interview.

The 32-year-old actor has played Jon Snow since the HBO show’s inception in 2011, and has subsequently launched his career into the stratosphere – landing voice roles in the How To Train Your Dragon franchise and lead roles in BBC dramas like Gunpowder since.

In an interview with Variety, Harington explains how growing as an actor through Jon Snow, however, has its downsides – including the overwhelming attention you’re faced with.

It also seems he’s own worst critic too, saying how he’s now content with not entirely being happy with his performance in the show.

‘Looking back at the entirety of Thrones,’ Harington said. ‘There’ll be 70% of the scenes that I’ll just never be happy with. I’ve come to terms with that.

‘I know who this is now, and I’m at peace with who this is. I just got a feeling that it’s the most satisfied I will be with my work as Jon Snow.’

Before this realisation, Harington’s concern over his work in the show led him to dark places, adding: ‘That was a time when I started therapy, and started talking to people.

‘I had felt very unsafe and I wasn’t talking to anyone. I had to feel very grateful for what I have, but I felt incredibly concerned about whether I could even f***ing act.’

Game Of Thrones is barreling towards its final season next month, with a recent trailer now suitably dissected within an inch of its frame.

The comedian also started to lose weight last year following the death of his father.

He revealed in December that he had lost over four stone and many of his fans were shocked to see his transformation, but the comedian said: ‘The weight loss wasn’t shocking…it took ages!’

During Friday night’s Comic Relief show Vegas appeared alongside the Magic Mike performers and he was wearing a fake six pack as he danced with them on stage.

What TV shows has Johnny Vegas been in?

Johnny has been a regular face on British television for nearly 20 years, including appearances in various sitcoms and panel shows.

In 2001 he became associated with his PG Tips adverts that he starred in alongside a puppet called Monkey, who was voiced by Ben Miller.

Some of his most notable work includes playing Geoff Maltby in the ITV sitcom Benidorm, as well as being a regular panellists for Shooting Stars during the early part of his career.

He has featured as a panellist on various shows including 8 Out of 10 Cats, Qi, Never Mind the Buzzcockcs, Celebrity Juice and Have I Got News For You.

More recently he has appeared in Red Dwarf and Still Open All Hours, as well as being a guest presenter for Sunday Brunch.

He is also set to voice the lead role in a new CITV series The Rubbish World of Dave Spud this year, and he will be starring in a new Channel 4 documentary series about camping sites.

Big Narstie calls in sick for Bake Off (Picture: Channel 4)

Big Narstie created some drama in the Bake Off tent when he had to pull out halfway through the episode.

The rapper and TV personality had completed day one of the challenges alongside Olympian Katarina Johnson-Thompson, MP Jess Phillips and comedian Johnny Vegas.

When the celebrity bakers arrived for the second day of filming they were told that Big Narstie wouldn’t be taking part in the next stage.

Revealing the news to the others contestants, presenter Noel Fielding said: ‘Unfortunately, Big Narstie can’t be with us today as he’s a little bit unwell, but he will be replaced by another baker. It’s a seamless swap, don’t worry.’

Sandi was then revealed to be the replacement for Big Narstie as she completed the second day of baking challenges.

It’s not been revealed exactly what was wrong with the rapper, but it was enough to make him unable to show off his baking skills for the second day.

Has anyone been unwell on Bake Off before?

It’s not the first time that somebody has missed out on a Bake Off challenge.

The 2018 series saw fan favourite Terry miss episode four completely due to illness, and that the rest of the bakers carried on without him.

His fellow contestants agreed that he should be allowed to return to the show the following week, which meant that nobody was eliminated on the week that he was away.

Instead there was a double eliminated on episode five which saw Terry and Karen leave the tent.

In series 5, which aired in 2014, contestant Diana left the show after episode 4 due to an illness.

She had suffered a head injury the day before the recording of the fifth episode and had to stay in a&e after losing her sense of taste and smell.

The judges decided that nobody would be eliminated that week.

Jess Phillips is set to step away from the House of Commons and instead be judged by Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith in tonight’s episode of The Great Celebrity Bake Off.

The Labour MP will be baking alongside comedian Johnny Vegas, Olympian Katarina Johnson-Thompson and rapper Big Narstie.

She is currently the MP for Birmingham Yardley and has been vocal about her beliefs on many occasions in the House of Commons.

Jess won her seat during the 2015 General Election with a majority of over 6,000 votes.

During her time as an MP she has made other TV appearances outside of parliament, including as a panelist on Have I Got News for You and The Wright Stuff, as well as several apperances on Peston and Politics Live.

In the same year that she won her seat Phillips gained attention for laughing at Conservative MP Philip Davies debating about International Men’s Day.

She said: ‘You’ll have to excuse me for laughing. As the only woman on this committee, it seems like every day to me is International Men’s Day.’

One of her most popular speeches came in March 2016 on International Women’s Day when she stood up in the House of Commons and read out the names of the 120 women who had been killed in Britain of the past year.

In October 2017 the MP revealed that she had been sexually assaulted on several occasions, including by her boss when she worked in a pub.

In January this year Jess spoke out about the proposed £30,000 salary threshold for migrants.

Speaking in the House of Commons, the MP said: ‘The idea that my constituents are not skilled because they do not earn over £30,000 is frankly insulting.’

The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up to Cancer airs at 8pm on Tuesday 19 March.

Jermaine Pennant slams Roxanne Pallett’s support for Michael Jackson: ‘It’s a publicity stunt’

Jermaine Pennant called Roxanne Pallett coming out to support Michael Jackson a ‘publicity stunt’
(Picture: REX)

Jermaine Pennant has branded Roxanne Pallett’s support for Michael Jackson a ‘publicity stunt’ as she makes her return to the spotlight.

Disgraced Celebrity Big Brother star Roxanne broke her silence earlier this month by coming out to defend the King of Pop on Instagram following controversial documentary Leaving Neverland, pulling a line from Jackson’s single Tabloid Junkie that read: ‘Just because you read it in a magazine or see it on the TV screen, don’t make it factual…’

Speaking exclusively to Metro.co.uk about Roxanne’s comeback, Jermaine said: ‘I’m not surprised that she’s come back because she was going to have to. She needs the work.’

However, Jermaine wasn’t sure of the intention behind Roxanne’s MJ post, telling us: ‘Maybe it’s a publicity stunt. Maybe it’s to get her back on the radar, who knows?

Roxanne broke her eight-month silence by coming out to support Michael Jackson (Picture: Instagram)

‘Because I don’t think she knew Michael Jackson personally, so I don’t know how she can defend someone with that kind of heat and story, it’s not something to take lightly.’

Roxanne had kept quiet for eight months following her stint in the Borehamwood Bunker, which saw her falsely claim that Ryan Thomas had punched her, attracting 27,000 Ofcom complaints in the process.

Michael Jackson estate's statement on Leaving Neverland

'Leaving Neverland isn’t a documentary, it is the kind of tabloid character assassination Michael Jackson endured in life, and now in death. The film takes uncorroborated allegations that supposedly happened 20 years ago and treats them as fact. These claims were the basis of lawsuits filed by these two admitted liars which were ultimately dismissed by a judge. The two accusers testified under oath that these events never occurred. They have provided no independent evidence and absolutely no proof in support of their accusations, which means the entire film hinges solely on the word of two perjurers.

'Tellingly, the director admitted at the Sundance Film Festival that he limited his interviews only to these accusers and their families. In doing so, he intentionally avoided interviewing numerous people over the years who spent significant time with Michael Jackson and have unambiguously stated that he treated children with respect and did nothing hurtful to them. By choosing not to include any of these independent voices who might challenge the narrative that he was determined to sell, the director neglected fact checking so he could craft a narrative so blatantly one-sided that viewers never get anything close to a balanced portrait.

'For 20 years, Wade Robson denied in court and in numerous interviews, including after Michael passed, that he was a victim and stated he was grateful for everything Michael had done for him. His family benefitted from Michael’s kindness, generosity and career support up until Michael’s death. Conveniently left out of Leaving Neverland was the fact that when Robson was denied a role in a Michael Jackson themed Cirque du Soleil production, his assault allegations suddenly emerged.

'We are extremely sympathetic to any legitimate victim of child abuse. This film, however, does those victims a disservice.  Because despite all the disingenuous denials made that this is not about money, it has always been about money – millions of dollars — dating back to 2013 when both Wade Robson and James Safechuck, who share the same law firm, launched their unsuccessful claims against Michael’s Estate. Now that Michael is no longer here to defend himself, Robson, Safechuck and their lawyers continue their efforts to achieve notoriety and a payday by smearing him with the same allegations a jury found him innocent of when he was alive.'

‘Nothing surprises me with Roxanne at the minute, added Jermaine, who is starring in an upcoming episode of Your Face Or Mine alongside his wife

Leaving Neverland documents a series of sexual assault allegations made against Michael, following Wade Robson and James Safechuck who claim they were abused by the singer when they were children.

The Jackson family have denied all allegations made against the Thriller star.

Your Face Or Mine continues on Wednesday 10 April at 8pm on Comedy Central UK.

Big Narstie rivals James Acaster as the most brilliantly terrible Great British Bake Off contestant

The Great British Bake Off welcomed another batch of celebrities into the tent for its Stand Up To Cancer specials, and we might have a new winner of the best worst contestant ever.

After last week saw comedian James Acaster suffer a very relatable breakdown in the kitchen, this episode invited Big Narstie, Johnny Vegas, MP Jess Phillips, and Olympian Katarina Johnson-Thompson into the tent.

From the get-go, it was the Narstie show. As bakers were tasked with creating a batch of shortbread biscuits, the rapper’s ‘Big Dog’ creations weren’t exactly encouraging a woof.

It didn’t seem like Narstie particularly cared about their appearance either, seen whipping out a stealth sandwich from beneath the worktop to enjoy on a break, and also chomping some of his own biscuits before the judges even approached.

Fancy a dog poop biscuit? (Picture: Channel 4)

Facing his criticism from judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood, Big Narstie concocted an excellent blag tactic to add deeper meaning to his ‘artistic’ choices.

‘Wagwan Prue dog,’ Big Narstie said. ‘I’ve gone for the artistic approach to my biscuits, its dog poop. The artistic version of this is please pick up after your animals.’

Miraculously, it wasn’t completely rejected by Prue, who said: ‘I’ve never tasted shortbread like that. You know what, they taste delicious.’

Prue liked Narstie’s biscuits? (Picture: Channel 4)

The second task saw them attempt to bake six individual pork pies, but Narstie instead opted to break the rules for his own ‘Rasta Pie’ interpretation.

Can you guess which one it is? You might need a closer look.

Check out those pies (Picture: Channel 4)

So Big Narstie all the time forever please?

Are we approaching James Acaster levels?

Unfortunately, Narstie’s Bake Off journey was cut short after being struck down by illness – leaving show host Sandi Toksvig to naturally act as a replacement.

Sandi was a valiant stand-in too, earning a handshake from Paul Hollywood for her banana cake. Although the star baker accolade fell to MP Jess Phillips.

You can catch up on The Great British Bake Off on 4 On Demand.

England beat Germany 4-2 as Harry Redknapp leads former players to victory

Harry Redknapp helped lead a team of 11 ex-England football players to victory on Tuesday in Harry’s Heroes, the ITV show which saw the players – all of whom found fame in the early 1990s – taking on former Germany players.

Harry, who won I’m A Celeb last year, brought together teammates and rivals for one final match against long time rivals Germany.

The men were put through their paces to get back in shape for the game, going on a strict diet and fitness regime like today’s football stars.

David Seaman was over the moon (Picture: ITV)

‘People know you over the years for being fantastic players,’ said Harry during his pre-game motivational speech, ‘let’s play football but let’s go out and enjoy it’.

Then he added, in typical Harry fashion: ‘But make sure we win.’

Victory for the 90s players (Picture: ITV)

Robbie Fowler scored the first goal at 32 minutes but in the second half, Mark Wright fouled a German player and Gaudino scored on a penalty.

The German side then caught a second wind and scored again making it 2-1 but Fowler was quick to boot the ball in the back of the German net in the 58th minute before Rob Lee made it 3-2 ten minutes later.

Paul Merson then made it 4-2 in the 90th minute.

The show was praised for raising awareness of mental health with former Arsenal player Paul Merson speaking frankly about his battle with drug addiction and gambling in a conversation with David Seaman and Robbie Fowler, admitting it is something he will have to struggle with for the rest of his life.

He said: ‘My life was completely and utterly out of control.

‘Being an addict is hard I would say. It’s something you’ve got for the rest of your life. Addiction is a strong thing. It’s weird how it takes you. I’m playing for England. I have all the money in the world. And I wanted to kill myself.

‘I were lower than low. Hundred per cent.’

Since the show, Merson has revealed he is getting help.

‘On the show, I talked a lot about my gambling, but afterwards, when I looked at the issues – it was the drinking,’ he said.

‘I realised the deep thing was the drink. If I have a drink, I have a bet. So I am not going to have a drink now. I am having help with the gambling and the drinking. I’m back in AA and my life is better.’

Love Island bosses confirm changes to show after deaths of Mike Thalassitis and Sophie Gradon

Love Island bosses have outlined new plans for safeguarding all islanders after their exit from the villa following the deaths of Sophie Gradon and Mike Thalassitis.

‘When something so awful happens we naturally enter a period of soul searching and ask whether anything could have been done,’ the show’s producer Richard Cowles wrote.

‘This review has led us to extend our support processes to offer therapy to all Islanders and not only those that reach out to us.’

The letter claims that the show will insist that all islanders meet with a therapist whether they ask for one or not, and that the show will deliver social media training and advice on financial management.

Cowles’ letter, sent to Metro.co.uk, also reveals that their ‘key focus will be for us to no longer be reliant on the Islanders asking us for support but for us to proactively check in with them on a regular basis’.

The changes have been announced three days after Mike, who appeared on the show in 2017 and was known as Muggy Mike, was found dead in a North London park, with police confirming he died by suicide.

Fellow Love Island stars Jess Shears and Dom Lever have since called out the lack of support contestants receive after leaving the show, saying more needs to be done.

‘Shows offer you “support” but realistically it’s only while you are in their care. Minute you get home & are no longer making them money it’s out of sight out of mind,’ Jess wrote.

‘There should be ongoing support & also financial advice. Life after these shows isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.’

Or is Jess hoping to salvage things with downcast Dom? It?s time to find out

It’s believed Mike’s death comes just days after his Nan passed away aged 94, who he had moved in with to become her full-time carer.

Mike, a former semi-professional footballer, was set to open his own restaurant, with reports indicating a reveal was set to take place next week.

His death came nine months after the death of Sophie, who appeared in the 2016 series of the show, and tragically died last June aged just 32, with her body found by Northumbria Police at her parents’ home.

The cause of her death was not confirmed although police said at the time there were no suspicious circumstances.

It has been reported that Sophie took her own life after suffering from depression and financial worries – although her parents are disputing these reports.

Love Island's letter

Everyone at Love Island is so shocked and absolutely devastated with the tragic news of Mike Thalassitis.

The Mike we knew was a remarkable and charismatic young man who made a huge impression both on the Love Island team and on viewers of the show. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

When something so awful happens it is natural to enter a period of soul searching and ask whether anything could have been done to help avoid something so terrible happening. It is not for us to speculate on the reasons behind this tragedy and what is so heartbreaking is that we simply cannot know.

Our show put Mike in the spotlight with all the ups and downs that brings. Mike’s TV career took off with Love Island and he went on to take part in other reality shows as his career grew.

Since the terrible news there have been a lot of people questioning Love Island’s processes and aftercare. Many of the things that have been said about them bear no relation to the support we offer. We want to outline our care processes.

As the show has grown ever more popular and our Islanders get increased attention in an ever changing landscape, each series we evolve the support we give them.

Our duty of care is a continuous and ongoing process for each Islander. This follows three key stages; pre-filming, filming, and aftercare. We work with both an independent GP and a psychological consultant to provide an assessment of the physical and mental health of each of the shortlisted cast members and their suitability for inclusion on the programme.

The medical team also contacts each Islander’s GP to check they feel that person is able to take part. We ask for full disclosure from potential cast members to these health professionals so that so that we can support them appropriately. As TV producers, we rely on medical experts to assess both mental and physical health to ensure that each candidate is suitable for inclusion.

Care continues whilst the Islanders are in the villa. We have a medical team on location which includes a psychological consultant. They not only look after Islanders’ healthcare needs, but also monitor them to check that there are no emerging signs of any problems developing whilst they are in the villa. Additionally, several of our senior team, who monitor the cast around the clock, have been trained in mental health first aid.

When the time comes for each Islander to leave the show, our aftercare process kicks in. Every Islander has a series of debrief meetings on location with the executive team and the medical team, including the psychological consultant. After this, they are told how to access after care support as well as information on seeking professional representation. They also meet with the press team the day after leaving the villa and are briefed and advised on their press coverage whilst in the villa.

We have had requests for help from former Islanders, and have provided this.

We have always recognised that this should be an evolving process and six months ago we engaged Dr Paul Litchfield, an experienced physician and a Chief Medical Officer, to independently review our medical processes on Love Island. He has extensive experience of working with large companies and Government in the area of mental health.

This review has led us to extend our support processes to offer therapy to all Islanders and not only those that reach out to us. And we will be delivering bespoke training to all future Islanders to include social media and financial management.

The key focus will be for us to no longer be reliant on the islanders asking us for support but for us to proactively check in with them on a regular basis.

Having said all of this about Love Island we must not lose sight of the wider issue which is the importance of the conversation on mental health. Across ITV we have worked with a number of charities including CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) on Project 84 and with Samaritans and CALM on Coronation Street, tackling the issue of male suicide. Conversations about mental health have never been more important.

Love Island has come under the spotlight over the aftercare of its cast members in the wake of Mike Thalassitis’ tragic death.

The reality star, who was a contestant on the show in 2017, was found dead at the weekend aged just 26 – nine months after the death of another former islander, 32-year-old Sophie Gradon.

It’s prompted criticism of the show from other former contestants – among them Jonny Mitchell, who has launched a petition demanding better aftercare of the contestants from ITV bosses.

The show has now announced plans for changes when the series returns later this year – but what have they said?

Here’s what you need to know.

What changes are being made for contestants on the next series of Love Island?

ITV has announced the changes in a letter which says that all islanders will meet with a therapist whether they ask to meet with one or not.

The show has said it will also deliver financial advice and social media training to contestants, and that their ‘key focus will for us to no longer be reliant on the Islanders asking us for support but for us to proactively check in with them on a regular basis’.

The letter said that they began reviewing their support and care processes six months ago after engaging the services of physician and Chief Medical Officer Dr Paul Litchfield.

Mike was found dead in a North London park on Saturday, with police confirming he died by suicide.

Since his tragic death fellow Love Island stars have called out the lack of support given to contestants after they leave the show, with Jess Shears, Dom Lever and Jonny Mitchell among those making their views known.

Meanwhile Jonny told Sky News: ‘There is absolutely no support involved,’ adding he was unprepared for his return to reality after the show and found it to be a ‘real shock’ when he saw the backlash he had received online.

‘I received all sorts of abuse and even death threats,’ he recalled.

He has now launched a petition on change.org demanding better aftercare for contestants on reality shows, which so far has attracted over 71,000 signatures.

When is Love Island back on ITV2?

Game Of Thrones star Joe Dempsie ‘trained like a psychopath’ so he could lift Gendry’s warhammer

Game Of Thrones actor Joe Dempsie came to regret his joke about Gendry when the character was absent from the show.

Gendry, the son of King Robert, wasn’t on the show for a long time when in season three he hopped in a rowboat and made his way to King’s Landing.

His absence continued all the way to season seven, and after season four the actor joked that Robert’s bastard son was ‘Still rowin’.

It was a great, well-timed quip but it snowballed and became all-consuming for Joe.

He told Entertainment Weekly: ‘It became my daily life. There was no escaping it.’

Joe was welcomed back into the Westeros fold for season seven, but was nervous about returning as he had been away for so long.

‘It was like getting a call out of the blue, saying, “Hey, so do you fancy stepping into the biggest TV show on the planet?”‘

When fans saw Gendry again he was wielding a brand new weapon – a huge warhammer – which he took with him on his journey north of the Wall.

To prepare himself, Joe was told to practice with a real hammer to make it look like he knew his way around it.

However, when he came to set, he was shocked to be given a foam hammer instead.

The actor pushed himself physically, spending ‘three months like a psychopath in my garden, swinging a sledgehammer around’.

‘I was the strongest I’ve ever been, trying to make a foam hammer look heavy,’ he said.

Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss recently spoke about how they would struggle to get back to normal life after being immersed in Westeros for so many years.

‘It’s the best job I’ve ever had or ever likely will have’ Benioff told Entertainment Weekly.

He added: ‘You have all these characters you love and you can come up with ideas for them, and a few months later these incredible actors will be saying those things. That’s such a rare gift.’

Weiss weighed in: ‘If 10 years ago somebody had given me a chance to write a ticket, I wouldn’t have been crazy enough to write a ticket to something this great.’

The newly released season eight trailer, which contains a hint of Gendry but seemingly zero Greyjoys, teased the epic battles in store for all the surviving characters as the HBO show hurtles to its climax.

Game Of Thrones returns 14 April to Sky Atlantic and HBO
