Jimmy Carr made his presenting debut on Thursday’s This Morning four years after eyeing up Phillip Schofield’s job during an interview on the infamous sofa.

The comedian was given his one minute in the ITV daytime’s driving seat by Holly Willoughby and Phil after he talking about his brand new Netflix series The Best of, Ultimate, Gold, Greatest Hits and gave a rundown of what was to come.

‘Welcome back to Jimmy Carr’s This Morning,’ he began. ‘Still to come on the show… Close you eyes and breathe very deeply, we’re taking part in a live meditation class with one of the industry’s leading experts. Can’t believe our luck.’

The 8 Out Of 10 Cats panellist continued: ‘He’s the funniest guest on the show today, Danny DeVito will be chatting about his new Disney film.’

When Jimmy had finished his hosting segment, Holly confessed that she was impressed with his skills, telling him he was ‘very good.’

‘Did I get the job?’ asked the funnyman, to which the This Morning duo both agreed that he had.

Viewers were divided over Jimmy’s presenting debut (Picture: Twitter)

However, viewers were divided by Jimmy’s takeover with one hoping that he never takes over the show permanently, writing: ‘Don’t even think about replacing Phil with Jimmy.’

Meanwhile another wanted to hear more from the comedian, urging: ‘Can Jimmy Carr do some hosting on This Morning please?’

Elsewhere on the show, Coronation Street star Bhavna Limbachia defended Rana Habeeb’s shock death after LGBTQ backlash and Danny DeVito dropped by to discuss his upcoming Disney film.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10.30am on ITV.

The Walking Dead’s Samantha Morton doesn’t see Alpha as a villain: ‘Everything she does comes from a place of sincerity’

Samantha Morton plays Alpha in The Walking Dead (Picture: AMC)

Alpha might be one of the most terrifying characters in The Walking Dead history, but actress Samantha Morton doesn’t see playing the Whisperers leader as a villainous role.

The 41-year-old actress has given The Walking Dead fresh life playing the feared bald-headed leader, making an entrance with severed heads, uncomfortable gravely whispers, and a troubled mother-daughter relationship.

While the natural tendency would be to rank Alpha alongside past villains like Negan, The Governor, and residents at Terminus, Morton has a different outlook on the character.

‘For me personally, I don’t see her as a villain,’ Morton said. ‘I see that I’m playing this woman. I see that everything she does comes from a place of sincerity and intent.

Alpha might be one of the scariest characters in the show’s history (Picture: AMC)

‘Whether she’s mad or not. Whenever you look through history at people that do horrific things, they seemingly think they’re on the right side of God, or doing them for the right reason.

‘So I’m not going: “Mwah-ha-ha-ha! I’m off to play this baddie in The Walking Dead!” Nothing like that. Her intentions are very focused and clear. But you still don’t mess with her.’

She added: ‘What I love about it is, it’s a woman. That’s awesome. These parts are normally written for men. It’s about time – not in the show, but in society, that we’re seeing more: “OK, you can play this role… Yes, we will put you in this part.” And it’s great.

‘So I hope people respond to Alpha anyway, I really do, in the way we would like them to.’

Samantha Morton shaved her head for the role (Picture: Karwai Tang/WireImage)

Morton also completely shaved her head for the role, after shunning the idea of having a bald cap.

‘There were discussions about a bald cap,’ Morton said. ‘But in the heat of Georgia, I wouldn’t want somebody messing with my head all day.

‘Plus, we all want it to be as real as possible. So I was, like, let’s go for it, take the hair off. Put a lot of sunscreen on, though!’

The latest episode of The Walking Dead shifted perspective to Michonne, as the survivors all look ahead to the Kingdom’s festival.

The next episode is titled The Calm Before, with an official synopsis reading: ‘The fair at the Kingdom is underway, with all four communities coming together in celebration for the first time in years; while some pacts are renewed, other deals will come at a much steeper price.’

The Walking Dead continues on AMC Sundays and airs Fox UK Mondays at 9pm. You can catch-up on NOW TV.

The Umbrella Academy is only just getting going now season two has been confirmed.

And while we eagerly await on a date for the next installment to drop, Diego star David Castañeda has revealed the second season is going to be ‘insane.’

Chatting to The Hollywood Reporter, the 29-year-old spoke about his upcoming story line and where he hopes his character will go.

He told the publication: ‘One of the best things about the show is how the characters arc, and it takes time to see people grow out of the traumas that they have.

‘I’d like to see where Diego goes. He’s able to cope with a lot more things, but now he lost his mom, he lost Patch.

‘He could either go completely insane off of it or he might just be a kid.’

He spoke about where Number Two’s character could be taken (Picture: Netflix)

Number Two’s role has differed from the now infamous comics written by the My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way over 10 years ago.

In the books, the character goes by the name of The Kraken, and was given the ability to hold his breath under water.

However, when appearing in the series, it seems his super power has been taken away from him and replaced with the ability to throw things with extreme precision.

After fans were left confused by the change, Castañeda spoke to Digital Spy in order to clear things up.

David Castaneda in The Umbrella Academy (Picture: Netflix)
The star recently cleared up why Diego has no powers (Picture: Netflix)

The actor said: ‘[He] wanted to ground the comic book even more. So for example, Klaus doesn’t levitate in the show, whereas in the comic book he does.’

‘And there’s something about seeing someone who has actually no real supernatural powers and only being able to throw things with precision that kind of makes people be like, “Oh, I can see that, I can put that person in real life and I can see it play out as a human being.”’

He added: ‘You have Luther who has super strength, and you have Allison who can change the reality…

‘And the fact that he can’t even be the one on top in the show, the resentment towards the father plays out even more because he is obviously placed at number two because he doesn’t have the powers one would say are divine.’

The Umbrella Academy is available to watch on Netflix now.

Game of Thrones’ Jaime Lannister gets ‘perfect’ ending in show’s season 8 finale

Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau says Jaime Lannister got ‘the perfect’ send off (Picture: HBO)

Now that the Game of Thrones trailer has been suitably dissected and the official running times of the last ever episodes confirmed, everyone is busy racking their brains over where all our favourite characters could end up,

We already know that the White King has a plot to kill somebody and that the odds for Euon Greyjoy’s survival are looking pretty slim, and now Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has confirmed that Jaime Lannister will get the ‘perfect’ send off in the series eight ending.

Talking about his epic send off, Nikolaj teased: ‘I had a great last scene. It was absolutely beautiful. It was the perfect way to end.

‘Obviously I can’t tell you what the scene was. It wasn’t the final scene (of the series), but it was close to the end, and it was shot at a beautiful location.’

Jaime is heading into battle in season 8 of Game of Thrones (Picture: HBO)

He continued: ‘At this point, I had seen quite a lot of colleagues wrap, so I had seen a lot of tears, beautiful speeches, and I knew what to expect.’

Does this mean Jaime wins the Iron Throne? Does this mean he defeats the White Walkers? Or does this mean he simply escapes the show with his life?

‘I find Jaime so interesting,’ Nikolaj added to Star2. ‘The core of this guy is that he does what he does in the name of love. He’s a complex guy.

‘That’s the key to Game Of Thrones, the characters are never just black and white. Even though his story is set in this fantastical world and his circumstances are extreme, he is relatable.’

Game of Thrones returns 14 April on Sky Atlantic and HBO, and is available to watch on NOW TV.

Stacey Solomon hopes Joe Swash ‘can’t cope’ without her if she dies first

Stacey Solomon has admitted how she hopes partner Joe Swash wouldn’t be able to cope if she died first.

The 29-year-old Loose Women panellist was discussing Netflix series After Life, starring Ricky Gervais, when discussion turned to how they would want their other halves to cope in the event of their death.

Speaking on Loose Women, Stacey explained how she hoped partner Joe Swash will ‘wallow’ for quite some time if she died before him.

‘Is it really bad that I feel like, I hope he can’t cope without me,’ Stacey said. ‘I feel terrible saying that, I really do feel terrible. I don’t know why I open my mouth.

‘I don’t want him to be happy without me. No, I want him to be happy, but I want him to go through a good period, if I god forbid was to go first, which I hope I don’t, again for selfish reasons.

‘But if that were the case, I’d want him to wallow for quite some time. It’s a terrible thing to say.’

It wasn’t the only admission Stacey made on the show, having also stated how she takes notes during arguments in order to maintain a healthy relationship.

Stacey added: ‘I always get annoyed, I try not to bottle things up but then I try to let things go because everyone’s got an opinion on what you should be doing in the perfect relationship.

‘So now I just do what works for me, which is… I like to write down. I’ve been in relationships before where I’ve been told what has happened and I’ve convinced myself that that’s not the way that it went but had no proof.

‘So now I like to just write it down. If something’s bothered me or upset me or an event has taken place in which I feel I might want to refer to at some point in the near future, I will write it down.

‘Sometimes I will use it if I need to defend myself in a case that is happening. But most of the time it’s just to clarify for me that I’m not going mad.

‘Sometimes you’re in the heat of a relationship and you’re having an argument over something you really believe happened, but they’re convincing you it didn’t. And I’m like, “Let me just check my notes.”’

Stacey and Joe announced they’re expecting their first child together in February earlier this year.

You can catch Loose Women weekdays on ITV at 12.30pm.

The OA’s Jason Isaacs didn’t realise Hap might not exist until he watched season one

Jason Isaacs plays Dr. Hap in The OA (Picture: Netflix)

The OA’s first season left a number of spiralling theories in its wake, with one of the big questions being whether Prairie invented her story about being kidnapped in Dr. Hap’s basement.

After going missing for seven years, a previously blind Prairie (Brit Marling) returned to her adoptive parents with her eyesight intact – telling a small group the story of how she was kidnapped by scientist Dr. Hunter Aloysius ‘Hap’ Percy (Jason Isaacs).

The season one finale, however, threw a hanging question over the story’s viability after follower French (Brandon Perea) discovered an assortment of books in Prairie’s house which cover the topics, like angels and Homer, she recounts.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Jason Isaacs explained how he wasn’t aware his character Hap might not be real until he watched the first season back himself, after focusing primarily on his arc in the script.

Prairie recounts how Hap kidnapped her in season one – but did he? (Picture: Netflix)

‘When I watched the first part, I was sent a link the night before I had to do lots of interviews,’ Jason said. ‘It messed up and I only got the link late at night, and I watched all eight hours in one go.

‘What came to me, although I had initially read all the scripts, I just followed Hap’s journey so I know those things, and only when I watched it the first time I realised that I might not even be real.

‘Maybe she wasn’t telling the truth. Maybe she was an unreliable narrator. I had no idea, [and] suddenly the whole thing, like a magic eye picture, came into a completely different focus for me.’

For the second season, Jason made a conscious decision not to read anything outside his role – purely because he’s such a huge fan of the show.

‘I did it this time deliberately,’ Jason said. ‘I did not want to know what was going on in worlds I didn’t know about as Hap.

‘Because I think I might be, in a really embarrassing turn of events, I think I might be the biggest fan of the show, so I don’t want to know what’s going to come.’

Strictly Come Dancing star Neil Jones is ‘trying to stay busy’ after speaking out about his wife Katya kissing comedian Seann Walsh last year.

Neil is looking forward to a busy summer on tour with the Strictly pros and performing a show put together with Katya about how they met.

The couple jointly addressed the kiss scandal in a TV interview earlier this month, and since then Neil says they are ‘keeping positive’ and focusing on their work.

When asked by Metro.co.uk how they have been getting on, Neil said: ‘It’s good. It’s nice to know Spring’s coming then Summer.

‘It’s just positive and we’re just keeping ourselves busy, meetings most of the days or in the studio. It’s keeping us occupied.

‘And then I think I found ten days to have a break after all of it before Strictly starts again.

‘Fingers crossed maybe with a partner. If not, still alright.

‘The fans are getting stronger every year. They’re sending me messages. They’re so supportive.

‘I’d be happy with any celeb. I joke around with different people all the time because I’ve worked with beginners, I’ve worked with advanced, it doesn’t matter who I get.

Courteney Cox visits Monica’s flat and jokes it’s ‘The One Where My Rent Went Up $12,000’

Courteney Cox has returned to New York and visited the apartment in Greenwich Village where exterior shots were filmed – and joked that the rental prices are now way too expensive for Monica and Rachel.

Playing on the Friends episode titles, Courteney videoed herself crossing the road at the junction of Grove and Bedford where the apartment is located, and added the caption: ‘The One Where My Rent Went Up $12,000 (£9,100)’.

Friends fans will know that although the hit TV show didn’t film in New York, all exterior shots were shot in Greenwich Village.

One of the main criticisms of the show at the time however was the fact that the friends – and in particular Monica and Rachel, and Chandler and Joey – could afford such large New York apartments when they often were out of work.

Producer Kevin Bright once admitted however that although the apartments were large for the real world, ‘in the process of making a TV show, the space has to be big enough for cameras, lighting, and for the audience to be able to see what’s going on’.

‘It’s to provide a place for the talented actors to execute the funny scripts. That’s what you’re supposed to be looking at, not the size of the apartment.’

Murder and Munchausen by proxy: The shocking true story behind The Act

$
0
0

The Act has launched on Hulu, starring Joey King as Gypsy Rose Blanchard, who is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for the murder of her mother.

But this is far from your average true crime murder tale.

The series details the events leading up to the death of Dee Dee Blanchard (played by Patricia Arquette) – whose daughter orchestrated her murder to escape a life of abuse.

Gypsy Rose Blanchard, now 27, is believed to have been a victim of Munchausen by proxy – a form of abuse in which the parent or guardian exaggerates or induces illness in a child for attention and sympathy.

Dee Dee alleged that Gypsy Rose had leukemia, asthma, muscular dystrophy and an allergy to sugar, while complications during a premature birth left her with brain damage, resulting in her having the mental capacity of a seven-year-old.

She shaved her daughter’s head on a regular basis to make her look like she had undergone chemotherapy, and forced Gypsy Rose to use a wheelchair – despite her not actually needing one.

Gypsy Rose also underwent numerous surgeries that were later deemed unnecessary, and had injections and medicines adminstered that made her lose her teeth and induce symptoms of the conditions Dee Dee claimed her daughter had.

According to Gypsy Rose’s cousin Bobby, she began using a wheelchair after she suffered an abrasion to her knee after being involved in a minor motorcycle accident aged seven. Dee Dee allegedly claimed that the abrasion was the sign of underlying injuries that would need surgery.

Gypsy Rose Blanchard
Dee Dee claimed that Gypsy Rose had cancer and muscular dystrophy

Gypsy Rose later claimed that while she knew she could walk and that she didn’t have the mental age of a child, she believed her mum when she said she had cancer.

Gypsy Rose was born in 1991, and while her mother told people she was a teenager with a much younger mental age, she was actually an adult in her 20s. She received trips to Disney World, backstage passes to concerts and media attention, with Habitat for Humanity even building the Blanchards as home with a wheelchair ramp and a hot tub.

Dee Dee was portrayed as a loving caretaker, but behind the scenes, she would physically abuse her daughter to control her.

According to reports, she would hold Gypsy Rose’s hand at all times, and would squeeze it hard if she said anything that suggested she was not as sick as her mother claimed.

Dee Dee was stabbed to death by Gypsy Rose’s boyfriend

As Gypsy Rose grew older, a number of doctors found that she tested negative for muscular dystrophy and that she could indeed walk. And in 2012, Gypsy Rose – now 21 – met Nicholas Godejohn on the internet. The pair grew close, with Gypsy Rose later telling a neighbour that they were considering eloping. In 2013, Gypsy Rose organised for Nicholas to visit her home in Springfield, Missouri, when they began their sexual relationship. They also began planning Dee Dee’s murder.

In June 2015, Godejohn came to the Blanchard house while Dee Dee was asleep, with Gypsy Rose allegedly giving him a knife, gloves and duct tape before she hid in a bathroom. She claims that she didn’t think Nicholas would carry out the act. However, he stabbed Dee Dee to death, before having sex with Gypsy Rose and fleeing to Wisconsin.

While it was initially theorised that Gypsy Rose was kidnapped, her relationship with Godejohn was soon discovered, and after the pair were traced via their IP address, they surrendered.

The Act

In July 2015, the abuse Gypsy Rose experienced came to light, and she accepted a plea bargain of second degree murder with a 10 year prison sentence.

Earlier this year, Godejohn was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.

The Act stars Patricia Arquette and Joey King as Dee Dee and Gypsy Rose respectively, and also stars Chloe Sevigny, AnnaSophia Robb and Calum Worthy.

The first two episodes are available on Hulu.

Back Into The Closet: From the outfit Jennifer Aniston didn’t want to wear, to the issues with the baby bump, inside the secrets from the Friends wardrobe

$

0

Costumes are a television show essential. Without them, a show is rendered completely unbelievable, but with them they catapult our imaginations to a particular time and place, leaving behind a legacy in the process.

Whether it’s Villanelle’s pink dress in Killing Eve or Ugly Betty’s poncho, there’s usually always more than meets the eye and a whole world of tiny details that escape unnoticed. Each week Back Into The Closet will deliver an exclusive look into the wardrobes of some of the world’s leading series to bring you all the costume secrets and niceties we might have missed.

Last week, we caught up with The L Word costume designer, but this time around we’re bringing you all the gems from the most popular sitcom of all time, Friends, courtesy of Cynthia Ann Summers.

Yep, that’s right, we’ve got the lowdown on Monica Gellar (Courteney Cox), Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston), Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc), Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry), Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow) and Ross Geller’s (David Schwimmer) wardrobe.

The One Where Jennifer Needed Convincing

Rachel had a number of iconic looks throughout the series, but one of her most standout outfits was the checked skirt and knee-high socks combo from season one.

Jennifer wasn’t so sure on this incredible outfit (Picture: Netflix)

But Jennifer wasn’t keen on the ensemble at first glance, and Debra had to use her power of persuasion, revealing: ‘I remember convincing her to wear the short kilt with the knee socks. She [Jennifer] didn’t get it.

‘She didn’t understand how that could possibly be sexy and I said, “I guarantee you that we’ll get more response in this than anything else,” and we did and she was so surprised.’

The One With The Smelly Baby Bump

Throughout the course of the series we saw a number of pregnancies, including Rachel with Emma, Phoebe with the triplets and Carol with Ben.

‘We had a person who won an academy award for prosthetics,’ Debra told us. ‘For Rachel, it was really bad because it had a terrible smell.

Rachel’s pregnancy bump didn’t smell pretty (Picture: Netflix)

‘There’s a fume that came out, it got better over the years, but in the earlier years it was a chemical that would emit so we couldn’t keep it on her that long.

‘It was an all around belly and it was genius and painted to perfection, but it never was the easiest thing to work with.’

The One With Ross’ Leather Pants

Season five gifted us the joy of Ross and his hot leather pants, which just might have been the biggest fashion fail in the history of the franchise.

David Schwimmer had many takes to get the leather pants scene down (Picture: Netflix)

Ross decided to wear his new purchase on a date, but was unable to cope with the heat they gave off and was forced to take cover in a bathroom where he spritzed them down with water before removing them completely.

‘We had to shoot that a thousand times, he had to do it over and over again,’ Debra revealed. ‘We do scenes multiple times on a sitcom, but we knew when we did that scene that it was going to be complicated with him shimmying in and out.

‘He was a good sport none the less because it was extremely difficult.’

The One Where The Costume Designer Stripped Down For Julia Roberts

Julia Roberts guest starred in the second season of Friends, playing Chandler’s childhood friend Susie Moss.

Susie hatched a cunning revenge plan to get back at Chandler for having lifted up her dress and showing off her underwear in front of the whole school, by getting him to strip down in a bathroom stall while on a date.

Julia Roberts wore the costume designer’s clothes for her Friends cameo in season 2 (Picture: Netflix)

And it turns out that it wasn’t just Julia’s character that had a knack for getting people to take off their clothes, as she had costume designer Debra shedding hers.

Recalling the moment, Debra explained: ‘I go into her dressing room and I’m wearing a black stretchy shirt with a matching pant and I walk in and I’m standing in the doorway and I introduce myself and say, “what look do you think you’d be wearing?,” and she looks at me and she goes, “I think I’d be wearing that.”

‘So I took my clothes off right there and then and that’s what she wore.’

The One Where Joey Wears Everything Chandler Owns

A completely starkers Joey threw on all of Chandler’s clothes in season three as revenge for him taking all of his underwear and it was epic.

‘Look at me, I’m Chandler. Could I be wearing anymore clothes?’ Joey mocked as he emerged from Chandler’s bedroom wearing an uncomfortable number of shirts, bottoms and ties.

Building that costume was amazing,’ Debra enthused. ‘What we did was, take all these pieces from his iconic wardrobe and cut them so they were flapped and looked like they were layer, upon layer, upon layer.

‘We undid that costume from the back, so he went in through the back and his arms would go in and it was Velcroed with a piece that went over the back so we couldn’t see the Velcro. It was quite an amazing construction job.’

The One Where The Guest Stars Got Intimidated

A number of Hollywood talent graced the Friends set over the years, playing anything from family members, sorority sisters, doctors and love interests.

‘The cast were extremely intimidating for guest stars who came in, regardless of how famous they were, because they were so brilliant in their timing and their comedy,’ Debra admitted.

The One With The Fat Suit

Actress Courteney wore a fat suit and prosthetics for Monica’s flashbacks in season five and was the centre of many jibes – something that Friends definitely couldn’t get away today.

‘I felt bad for her [Courteney] because when we first started doing it, it was incredibly difficult and suffocating but as the years went on we got a little bit more tech savvy and figured out ways to pipe air into it,’ Debra told us, ‘It was completely transformative.’

The One With All The Wedding Dresses

From Monica and Chandler to Phoebe and Mike and Rachel and Ross, there a lot of weddings over the 10 seasons.

Debra made sure that each character had way more wedding dresses than they needed too, you know, just in case.

‘I always made wedding dresses for them, but not with any intentions of it being “the one” because we never knew which would fit the look and which would fit their bodies because we never had much time to do alterations,’ she revealed.

Monica, Phoebe and Rachel had 30 wedding dresses each (Picture: Netflix)

‘Sometimes it would work and sometimes it wouldn’t work,’ Debra added. ‘We’d sometimes have 30 dresses for each character and weed through it with them.

‘It would always be whatever fit the best and whatever worked and it also had to work with the comedy.’

Netflix denies changing episode order of Love, Death & Robots based on sexuality

Love, Death & Robots has had a unique roll out (Picture: Netflix)

Netflix has denied changing the episode order of their TV shows based on sexuality, after a viewer claimed new show Love, Death & Robots shuffled the order based on his sexual preference.

Some viewers have noted how episodes of Netflix’s new animation series Love, Death & Robots have been put in a different order for different accounts, with Twitter user Lukas Thoms stating how an episode featuring a lesbian storyline was placed first in his running order.

Thoms believed, after speaking with both gay and straight friends, the running order was somehow based on sexual orientation, perhaps stemmed from data Netflix has on your viewing habits.

It doesn’t just apply to Love, Death & Robots either, with some viewers stating they have a jumbled order for Queer Eye in comparison to others.

Responding to Thoms tweet, Netflix denied they were able to collect data on sexuality, but said they had released different running orders for Love, Death & Robots as an experiment.

Netflix tweeted: ‘We’ve never had a show like Love, Death & Robots before so we’re trying something completely new: presenting four different episode orders.

‘The version you’re shown has nothing to do with gender, ethnicity, or sexual identity – info we don’t even have in the first place.’

While there’ll likely be conspiracy theorists abound, the possibility of Netflix tracking any form of data based on sexuality feels like a leap – especially considering users can have multiple accounts and people’s TV tastes can vary incredibly widely.

Netflix are, however, hoping to deliver more interactive content following the success of Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, so maybe we’re all secretly judged on our cereal preferences instead. Chose Sugar Puffs over Frosties? You deserve Marvel’s Iron Fist.

Ricky and his friends will be back for a second season of After Life (Picture: PA)

It only debuted on Netflix this month but Ricky Gervais has confirmed that a second season of After Life is already in the works.

The TV star has won critical acclaim for the comedy series, which sees him star as Tony, a man struggling to cope with life following the death of his beloved wife.

Due to popular demand, Ricky, 57, has revealed he’s now in the process of working on the script for season two but stopped to thank fans for their support of the series.

The comedian tweeted: ‘Once again, I have to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your amazing tweets about #AfterLife.

‘I’ve never had a reaction like it. I have a spring in my step as I skip towards writing series 2 [sic].’

It comes after Ricky recently expressed his hopes to continue the show beyond season one.

The British comedian told Metro.co.uk: ‘I always do that just in case I die!’

‘Now I’ve thought about it, and I really would like to do a second series because I fell in love with the characters and I’ve got an idea of where it can go.

‘The second series is always better. Usually because you know the actors.

‘There’s a little clue at the end of series one when he says, I’m just going to use my superpower for good. He can still be an asshole, and just enjoy it more.’

After Life also starred Mandeep Dhillon, Roisin Conaty and Joe Wilkinson, all of whom appeared alongside Ricky in David Brent: Life On The Road.

Let’s hope the gang reunite for season two.

Blockbusters host Dara O’Briain compares legacy of game show to Pixar’s Ratatouille and it actually makes sense

Dara O'Briain on Bockbusters

Blockbusters is back (again) in its fourth carnation since Bob Hollins oversaw the very first gold run in 1983, and this time its comedian Dara O’Briain offering up alphabetical questions to a millenial generation of students.

It’s been 36 years since Blockbusters became an immediate tea-time favourite, and other than its rotation of presenters, which have also included Liza Tarbuck, Michael Aspel and Simon Mayo, very little has changed with the classic quiz show.

Which, according to Dara, is the vital ingredient to its longevity, best explained through a surprisingly accurate analogy using Pixar’s Ratatouille.

‘It’s a very straightforward format, it’s very playable,’ Dara explained to Metro.co.uk ‘But I think there’s something said for something that came into our lives and has just been there for a very long time.

‘I saw Ratatouille again the other day for the first time in ages and you know at the end with the food critics?’

I didn’t, and felt like I needed to stop him there, but actually there’s a logic here. The scene in question sees a sceptical reviewer enter a restaurant with his nose in the air and pen ready for a scathing write up. However, he’s then given a bowl of ratatouille and laps it up like a Big Mac on a hangover.

‘It will make you laugh and it will remind you of watching with your tea. It rides on being the thing that was on in your childhood,’ said Dara.

‘The childhood meal transports the food critic from being a cynical person to being touched by the welcomed meal from his childhood.’

Bob Holness
Bob Holness presented Blockbusters from 1983 to 1993 (Picture: ITV)

Whether it’s Dara or Bob in the hot seat, Blockbusters works. The game speaks for itself, so thankfully there were no concerns filling the late idol’s boot; partly because there was no ‘Bob catch phrase’ or theme tune, the comic stressed.

‘The minute where I do anything and I’m messing around with the audience chatting, it’s what I do,’ he continued. ‘The show is played pretty straight – bar the one Blockbusters joke which, to my despair, still makes people laugh. The show has me about 40 times being asked “Can I have a P please Dara?”

‘But bar that one joke it was done pretty straight. The minute you start doing the jokes and peppering with chat it becomes a different show.’

Blockbusters makes a glorious return to Comedy Central tonight at 8pm.

Ellen Pompeo sparked speculation she is planning on leaving Grey’s Anatomy (Picture: Getty)

Grey’s Anatomy is rumbling towards the end of season 15, and Ellen Pompeo admitting she is torn about whether or not to turn her back on the show when her contract is up, next year.

The 49-year-old is the longest running cast member, and has been playing Meredith Grey since the cameras started rolling, 15 years ago, but recently hinted she was keen to try new things – away from Seattle Grace Hospital.

But co-star Jake Borelli, 27, isn’t too show the sure can continue without her – and neither are we.

Jake Borelli isn’t sure Grey’s Anatomy can survive without Ellen’s Meredith Grey (Picture: WireImage)

Speaking exclusively to Metro.co.uk, the Levi Schmitt actor told us: ‘I think it will be very hard for the show to go on without her. She’s such an institution and she created the show.

‘I mean, the show is Grey’s Anatomy, its Meredith Grey.

‘I think it would be hard, even on a character level, it would be hard for the characters to deal with any sort of absence of Meredith Grey. Everyone is so connected to her. I think it would be difficult, but anything can happen.

‘It would be wonderful for the show to start and end with Meredith.’

We’re getting a little emotional just thinking about it.

Levi Schmitt is currently dating Dr Kim on the show (Picture: Getty)

Levi hasn’t had the easiest time since joining Seattle Grace at the beginning of season 14 – with his glasses falling straight into a body cavity on his first day in the job.

But the nervy doctor has come on leaps and bounds since those first days, and Jake has been loving the change.

‘I think over the season, Levi has really stepped into his body and confidence,’ he continued. ‘He has a boyfriend now, he’s getting better at surgeries. His confidence is just continuing to grow.

‘Between now and the end of the season, I’m hoping we start to see how he blossoms as a doctor. We’ve been seeing him blossom as a human being and I’m excited to see how that might translate into his workplace.’

And what does he want for Levi in the future? For him to become a ‘badass doctor,’ of course.

‘He’s surrounded by them and that would be such a wonderful trajectory for him. To come from the bottom of the barrel and really prove himself as a surgeon. That’s all he wants and what they’re all working for.

‘That’s my hope for him.’

Us too, hun. Us too.

Grey’s Anatomy season 15 continues on Thursdays, in the US, on ABC, and Wednesdays, at 9pm, on Sky Witness in the UK.

What year is Pose set in and what is ‘New York ball culture?’

Pose is bringing some 80s ball culture glamour to BBC Two (Picture: BBC)

BBC Two is about to get a shot of 80s glamour on its screens as the hit US show Pose kicks off.

The series is set in late 80s New York, at the height of the Aids epidemic in the US – and at the height of the city’s ‘ball culture’.

It’s that which is at the centre of the show, which has proven so popular that it’s already been renewed for a second series, as well as nabbing itself a clutch of Golden Globe nominations including one for its star Billy Porter (he of the Oscars ‘tuxedo gown’).

But just what was ballroom culture – and just how influential was it?

Here’s what you need to know as the series starts…

What year is Pose set in?

Pose is set in 1987-88.

While the eight-part series’ focus may be on ball culture, other aspects of life in New York City at that time are also featured.

The downtown social and literary scene also plays a part in the show, as does the rise of the yuppie.

What is New York ballroom culture about?

While ball culture still exists today, its origins date back to the 1920s, when predominantly white men would take part in drag shows, with black participants being rare.

The more modern ball culture was born out of the black community establishing its own underground culture in the 1960s, and became more popular in 1977 when Manhattan drag queen Crystal Labeija (the subject of a tribute by Aja on RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2018) started the House of Labeija.

The culture subsequently took off in the 80s, with participants competing for prizes at balls, which are awarded for walking and dance skills as well as costumes/appearance and attitude and other categories.

The series will take a look at the popularity of ball culture in late 80s New York City (Picture: BBC)

Most participants belong to groups known as ‘houses’, regarded as ‘alternative families’ for their members, led by ‘mothers’ and ‘fathers’ who provide support to their ‘children’.

The houses consist primarily of black and Latino LGBT members, and currently exist in overr 15 US cities, including Philadelphia, Baltimore, San Francisco and Washington DC, as well as New York City.

The ball culture is also famous for having produced a form of dance known as ‘voguing’ – which of course inspired the classic Madonna dance anthem which went to number one in 1990.

The culture also featured in the 1990 movie Paris Is Burning.

When is Pose on?

The series kicks off on BBC Two on Thursday night at 9pm.

Kerry Katona thanks Celebs Go Dating for helping her ‘find herself’ as she turns up to party solo

Kerry realised she needed to learn how to love herself first (Picture: E4)

Kerry Katona has thanked Celebs Go Dating coach Paul Brunson for teaching her ‘how to love myself’.

Kerry appeared on the most recent season of the hit E4 show but despite not finding love, she found something even better.

‘I found something much better than any fella, I found myself,’ she said.

‘I didn’t come all this way for nothing. Let’s get the party started.’

‘I found myself,’ she said. (Picture: E4)

‘I feel I’ve learnt I am not ready for a relationship now,’ she later told Paul and Anna Williamson.

‘And I am comfortable and content with just me and it’s the first time in 38 years I’ve felt like that.’

‘I truly believe she was sent from heaven to show us the power of resilience, courage, and self-love,’ shared Paul on Instagram as the episode aired.

In reply Kerry added:’Bless you it’s been an absolute pleasure working and meeting you and thank you for teaching me how to love myself again!’

The 38-year-old surprised her co-stars by turning up late to the party in Tenerife despite claiming she would not be attending.

Kerry originally didn’t have much luck on Celebs Go Dating so far and blamed the agents, calling them ‘a pair of toss pots’ and told them to ‘work harder’ on finding her perfect man.

To be fair she (kind of) had a point after her car crash of a date with businessman Nick which went downhill fast after he called her first born child – daughter Molly who she shares with ex Brian McFadden – a mistake

The I’m A Celeb winner has five kids in total; daughters Molly, 17, and Lilly-Sue, 16, with first husband Brian McFadden; Heidi and Maxwell, 10, with second spouse Mark Croft, and Dylan-Jorge, five, with third hubby George Kay.

Howard Donald hailed Celebrity Juice hero as he thrusts and shows off banana skills

Take That singer Howard Donald completely won over Celebrity Juice viewers tonight as he took on all the naughty challenges like a pro. Robbie Williams will be proud.

Howard, 50, and fellow contestant Mark Wright joined new team captain Paddy McGuinness, who has replaced Fearne Cotton for the latest series of Keith Lemon’s hit ITV show.

Clearly the perfect choice for Celeb Juice, it wasn’t long before Howard was thrusting his hips and getting his forehead whacked by a penis.

Would you expect anything less from Keith?

Later in the show, Howard was showing off his skills with a banana and, frankly, it was all too much to handle for viewers who hailed him ‘TV gold’.

One ITV viewer tweeted: ‘Absolutely loved @HowardDonald on #CelebJuice so funny!! Need @OfficialMarkO n @GaryBarlow on there next, what u reckon Howard, they be up for it?!? @lemontwittor get the signed up!! #takethattakeover.’

Highly amused, another viewer weighed in: ‘I never thought I’d be watching @lemontwittor slapping @HowardDonald in the face with his Ball Bag! #tvgold.’

Calling for the rest of Take That to take on the Celeb Juice challenge, one commented: ‘Absolutely loved @HowardDonald on #CelebJuice so funny!! Need @OfficialMarkO n @GaryBarlow on there next, what u reckon Howard, they be up for it?!? @lemontwittor get the signed up!! #takethattakeover.’

Erm, a Take That take over? Totally here for that.

Another viewer joked: ‘Love how Howard Donald was in one of the biggest bands ever n now he’s getting slapped in the face with a plastic Babbage on @CelebJuice,’ while another said: ‘Loving the dirty Howard tonight.’

Former Towie star Mark also entertained by FaceTiming his bestie James “Arg” Argent, who happened to be topless.

However, when Arg was asked to show his bum, Mark quipped: ‘He can’t show you. Gemma’s licking it,’ of course in reference to The GC aka Gemma Collins.

Celeb Juice, also featuring team captain Holly Willoughby, returns next Thursday on ITV at 10pm.

Line of Duty series 5 review: Jed Mercurio is taking no prisoners as AC-12 face their most dangerous villain yet

Programme Name: Line of Duty - Series 5 - TX: n/a - Episode: Line of Duty S5 - Portraites (No. n/a) - Picture Shows: Kate (VICKY MCCLURE), Steve (MARTIN COMPSTON), Hastings (ADRIAN DUNBAR) - (C) World Productions - Photographer: Aiden Monaghan
Line of Duty is back and be afraid, be very afraid (Picture: BBC)

Line of Duty’s success story has been a particularly unconventional one, to say the least.

Jed Mercurio’s police drama went somewhat under the radar when AC-12 , the fictional police department which takes down bent coppers consisting of Kate Fleming (played by Vicky McClure), Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) and Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar), was introduced on BBC Two.

Four series down the line, Mercurio just penned the most successful BBC drama of all time in Bodyguard, which subsequently won every major award going and turned Richard Madden into a household name – a feat which couldn’t even be boasted by Game of Thrones – and, thankfully, Line of Duty appears to be reaping the rewards of its creator’s newly lucrative name.

Two years has passed since DCI Roz Huntley (Thandie Newton) was locked up for the murder of Tim Ilfield (Jason Watkins), and ACC Hilton (Paul Higgins) became the lead suspect behind the corruption coming from the top – aka ‘H’ – given his involvement in the Balaclava murders and subsequent suicide. Until, of course, series four closed with a that dodgy glare from Hastings, which we’ve been desperately trying to decipher ever since.

WARNING: Embargoed for publication until 00:00:01 on 26/03/2019 - Programme Name: Line of Duty - Series 5 - TX: n/a - Episode: n/a (No. 1) - Picture Shows: McQueen (ROCHENDA SANDALL), Corbett (STEPHEN GRAHAM) - (C) World Productions - Photographer: Aiden Monaghan
John Corbett and Lisa McQueen are easily AC-12’s most terrifying foe yet (Picture: BBC)

The Balaclava gang are still terrorising at large, with a recent teaser confirming John Corbett (Stephen Graham) is just one of the men behind the mask. And he’s terrifying. Corbett is by far AC-12’s most impressive foe yet, and for the first time they’re dealing with a much greater threat than corrupt officers: a cold blooded killer.

Graham’s presence is an immediate thump in the chest from the get-go. Corbett’s arrival promises blood shed and at this point in the game, anyone is in the firing line – even the cast admitted that going into this run no one is safe.

By his side is Lisa McQueen, played by Broken star Rochenda Sandall, who may not be quite as barbaric, but she’s dangerous. When we meet the pair, there’s a deep rooted struggle for power over their mutually lead gang of brutal murderers, and the knives are out – quite literally. It’s a first for Line of Duty, the stakes are higher: there’s an onslaught of Balaclava men, each of them just as deadly as the last. Remember, one came agonisingly close to killing Arnott in one of the most horrific attacks we’ve seen so far.

Hastings’ brilliantly painful one-liners are still coming in thick and fast, as are Mercurio’s onslaught of twists. Everything you think you know, forget it because you nothing at all. Can we trust anyone? Absolutely not, despite almost a decade of championing our heroes, suddenly there’s every chance Hastings has had an ulterior motive all along and has in fact been the most corrupt cop of them all. Honestly, our introduction to series five does little to calm us down.

The budget has undoubtedly gone through the roof series by series but the quality has never faltered. If anything, Mercurio has managed to increase intrigue more and more as the story unfolds.

Theoretically, Line of Duty’s expiry date should be looming – how many more curveballs can they possible throw at us now? But Mercurio still has unbeatable knack of making sure the unexpected will creep up on us when we least see it coming, and that’s already the case here. Basically, brace yourselves for an extremely stressful six weeks ahead.

Line of Duty returns to BBC One on Sunday March 31.
