Great British Bake Off’s Jamie Finn posts emotional message to fans after backlash over exit and it’s a lot

The Great British Bake Off claimed its second victim last night, as cheeky 20-year-old Jamie Finn was eliminated following his performance in Biscuit Week.

The hapless baker won around fans and penned a letter to thanks them for their support, amongst outrage that he was booted off the show in week two.

Part-time waiter Jamie charmed viewers with his charisma, despite his baking talents not measuring up with his competitors in the tent.

It’s fair to say that people were quite upset at Jamie’s eviction last night, and to placate outrage, the official Great British Bake Off Twitter account posted a heart-warming, hand-written message from the student himself.

‘Thank you so much for all the messages I’ve been sent and for the love I have received,’ Jamie wrote. ‘I’m overwhelmed by the support I’ve been given on social media which I really wasn’t expecting and it has made my Bake Off experience even better!

‘I feel so lucky to have been given the opportunity of a lifetime to bake in the big white tent and its an experience I will never forget! My entire Bake Off journey, from writing my application to hugging everybody goodbye has just been insane and I will be forever grateful for it!’

Biscuit Week would be the Surrey native’s swansong. The contestants were tasked with making a chocolate-coated biscuit bar, a technical challenge of fig rolls and finally a showstopper with a biscuit sculpture.

Unfortunately, Jamie’s showstopper challenge started to crumble in the oven, which eventually sealed his fate.

Although fans became incensed at the student’s elimination, many were probably still surprised that he survived week one of the competition, where he forgot to put eggs into one of his creations. He controversially survived whereas Dan Chambers was the surprise exit in the first episode.

‘I definitely deserved to go when I did,’ he continued in his letter. ‘It wouldn’t have been fair for any of the other bakers to go they are super talented!’

Jamie’s Bake Off journey may be over, but it’s just a few short weeks until we see him again in the grand final…

The Great British Bake Off continues Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4.

Love Island star Amy Hart has admitted that she was an ‘idiot’ on the show and that her biggest regret had nothing to do with her romance with Curtis Pritchard.

The 27-year-old former contestant, who sparked dating rumours after being spotted with DJ Toby Antstis, confessed that she would have done one thing differently if she could do her time again.

‘I wouldn’t have lived on macaroni cheese and pizza in lockdown week [the week before the show],’ Amy told Heat magazine.

Amy revealed that she embarked on a strict vegan diet for eight weeks before going into the Majorcan villa and went to the gym every single day so get her dream bikini bod.

Besides enjoying comfort food less, Amy also said that she also wishes she had more fun in the challenges and spent less time moaning.

Curtis dumped Amy in heartbreaking scenes (Picture: ITV)

Explaining why she went on Love Island in the first place, Amy added: ‘I didn’t see it as going on to a TV show – I went in there ‘to find someone’. What an idiot!’

Amy had a rollercoaster of a journey on the show, having been temporarily loved up with Curtis before he sensationally called things off.

She later quit the villa after deciding she got all that she could get out of the experience.

Speaking in the Beach Hut she explained: ‘I have been on such a huge journey… I did not imagine that first night I would meet this boy [Curtis] that would change my life and change my mindset.

‘I want him to be happy and I want him to meet someone else so I’m leaving here today not holding any grudges against anyone, not against Curtis, not against Maura, no one.

‘I never thought I would fall in love, I never thought someone would make me feel so special that I would fall in love with them and I did and it makes me realise that that will happen for me again, just not in here.’

Love Island returns to ITV2 in January 2020.

New Game of Thrones fan poll claims that not everyone hated season 8 after all

Game of Thrones’ final season: a big heap of steaming disappointment, right?

Well, actually, maybe not: a new poll has claimed that fans of the show were actually more split on their opinion of season 8 than what was suggested by the hate-filled backlash and petitions which largely stole the fan reaction headlines earlier this year.

YouGov, who are more renowned for polling people’s political voting intentions, have delved into the mess to try and get a clearer picture of fan opinion by commissioning a survey on GoT’s last-ever season as part of an overall poll on this month’s Emmys.

game of thrones
Not actual footage of the polling process (Picture: HBO)

The pollsters found that 52% of the GoT fans they surveyed were either ‘somewhat satisfied’ or ‘very satisfied’ with season 8, with only 41% registering their dismay with responses of ‘somewhat dissatisfied’ or ‘dissatisfied’.

7% of responders sat on the fence, helpfully.

While the poll only surveyed 2475 US adults – only 18% of whom said that they’d watched every single GoT episode – these are still interesting returns to take away about fan opinion on season 8.

Given that the poll was only conducted late last month, might it also suggest that, upon reflection, people’s opinion of the final season have softened somewhat?

NEW YORK, NY ??? May 12, 2019: Game of Thrones The fifth episode of the 8th and final season. Seven noble families fight for control of the mythical land of Westeros. Political and sexual intrigue is pervasive. Across the sea, the last members of the previous and deposed ruling family, the Targaryens, are also scheming to regain the throne. The friction between the houses Stark, Lannister and Baratheon, and with the remaining great houses Greyjoy, Tully, Arryn, and Tyrell, leads to full-scale war. All while a very ancient evil awakens in the farthest north. Amidst the war and political confusion, a neglected military order of misfits, the Night's Watch, is all that stands between the realms of men and icy horrors beyond. Season 8 certainly went up in flames (Picture: HBO)

The YouGov poll also found Game of Thrones topping fan opinion about which show should scoop the Emmy for Outstanding Drama series with a whopping 18% of the vote – although the 48% who replied ‘don’t know’ rather spoiled that part of the survey.

Whether you loved or hated GoT season 8, it’s unlikely that the result of the poll will change your view on the final season of the show at this late stage – as, of course, 2475 other adults could easily have said the opposite about the show and turned the results of the survey upside down.

But it’s at least a comfort for the beleaguered showrunners to hear that not everyone hated season 8 – take that, petition-writers.

Jane McDonald says Loose Women saved her life: ‘It has been 10 years of therapy’

Jane McDonald has spoken about how Loose Women saved her life, revealing that her first appearance on the show was ‘the first appearance on TV after Henrik [Brixen] left’ her.

Jane and Henrik married in 1998 and he later became her manager but her career led to their split in 2003, when he admitted that he did not understand the music industry.

‘It was a terrible time, I was [still in love] and it’s a shock when you face your faults and when someone who doesn’t love you any more walks out. Everyone had followed this Cinderella story of me meeting my prince charming and then he took off,’ she said.

After that appearance, Jane was asked to become a regular panelist and she added: ‘It saved my life really, Loose Women has just been amazing. It has been 10 years of therapy.’

In 2008, she rekindled a teenage romance with musician Eddie Rothe and they became engaged later that year. Their romance was also said to have been saved by the ITV magazine show, with Jane revealing that during one of his tours, their relationship struggled and they decided to end their romance.

However her colleagues were unaware, and knowing that she missed him they chose to do a live link to Australia.

Awkward.

‘The day before I was on the phone to him and I thought, “I can’t do this again” because we had been together 27 years prior and the same thing was happening. He was away on tour, five or six weeks and I thought this was the same problems we had before,’ she said.

‘So the night before that clip I was like “I can’t do this anymore, it’s been lovely I wish you all the best” and then I heard the phone ringing and I thought “who’s ringing him at this time?”

‘And I thought he’s seeing someone else. That’s it, it’s over. And it was the Loose Women team!’

When she found out what the team had done, they spoke again and decided to talk on his return to the UK which led to Eddie leaving The Searchers and him supporting Jane’s career instead.

Piers Morgan savagely called a ‘pig’ by his own seven-year-old daughter live on Good Morning Britain

Piers Morgan has been called a ‘pig’ live on Good Morning Britain after a ‘heavy night’ by his own severely unimpressed seven-year-old daughter, Elise.

The GQ Men of the Year Awards 2019 took place last night at the Tate Modern and TV’s most controversial presenter was there to soak up the ambiance alongside David Backham, Richard Madden and Kylie Minogue. Piers’ day job, however, meant that he had an early start on Good Morning Britain today.

One person to notice that the 54-year-old father of four was not looking his best the morning after the night before was his youngest child, seven-year-old Elise, who emailed her dad live on air to share exactly what she thought.

‘Just had a lovely, charming message from my seven-year-old daughter Elise, who watches the programme,’ Piers huffed. ‘She just sent me a lovely e-mail saying, “Hi pig, you look terrible.”‘

Elise’s brutal takedown of her father had co-host Susanna Reid in stitches, although we’re still scratching our heads over the fact that a seven-year-chooses e-mail as their preferred form of communication.

‘If you’re wondering why I am like I am,’ Piers added. ‘It’s because that’s my home life. That’s my own daughter.’

Charlotte Hawkins even asked the former newspaper editor whether that was his pet name at home, and we think Susanna is probably still laughing about it now – she just asked Piers not to take the comments out on his Good Morning Britain colleagues.

Surely it was all worth it, though, as last nights GQ Men of the Year Awards 2019 was a truly star-studded affair. From Fleabag reuniting with her now-award-winning Hot Priest, to David Beckham taking home the coveted Editor’s Special award and even a performance by Kylie Minogue herself.

All worth it to get called out by your daughter the next morning live on national television? Maybe not.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6.30am on ITV.

Top Boy bosses thought about bringing show back as a musical before Netflix revival

$

Before it was announced that Top Boy had been revived by Netflix with Drake’s help, bosses wracked their brains for ideas on how they could bring the series back.

Besides floating around the notion of a feature-length film, writer Ronan Bennett along with producers Alasdair Flind and Charles Steel, envisioned their gritty crime drama as a musical.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk ahead of Top Boy’s hotly-anticipated brand new series, Ronan revealed: ‘When we got the news from Channel 4 that there wasn’t going to be a third season, Charles, Alasdair and I, we talked about the possibility of doing it as a single feature film.

‘We kind of dismissed that idea, it didn’t go anywhere. There was even talk of doing a musical, that didn’t go anywhere and so I just thought it was just gone.’

Ronan continued: ‘I think two or three months after it was canceled, we all thought it was dead.

‘We all just went back to work on other things with a heavy heart, it was quite devastating really.

Top Boy on Netflix
The brand new season of Top Boy is right around the corner (Picture: Netflix)

‘You kind of think, what more do you have to do to get recommissioned? We’ll all used to it. It was gutting, but that is the business that we’re in.’

After six years off our screens, Top Boy is set to return with Dushane (Ashley Walters) coming back from his exhile to his home in London to reclaim his throne in the highly lucrative drug market.

‘He teams up with Sully (Kane Robinson), his spiritual brother, partner and sometime rival who is also returning to the same streets after his own form of exile – prison – comes to an end,’ teases the synopsis.

‘Awaiting them both is Jamie (Micheal Ward), the young, hungry and ruthless gang leader whose ambitions leave no place for Dushane and Sully.’

Top Boy drops on Friday 13th September on Netflix.

Peaky Blinders: Tommy Shelby’s nasty cough in season 5 is worrying fans

Peaky Blinders: Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy)
Tommy should probably cut down on the cigs while he’s got this cough, TBF (Picture: Matt Squire/BBC/Caryn Mandabach Productions Ltd 2019)

There are plenty of threats on Tommy Shelby’s life that are looming large throughout Peaky Blinders, but maybe he won’t meet his inevitable end in quite the way many fans might be predicting.

As likely as it is that he’ll eventually be gunned down by one of the Shelby family’s many enemies, maybe a nasty illness will do for Tommy in the end.

And it’s a possibility that Peaky fans are beginning to cotton on to as season 5 of the dramatic BBC show continues: all because of his frequent cough.

While not overstating it, Cillian Murphy’s character has been seen coughing in a growing number of scenes in season 5 – such as at the climax of the tense exchange with Michael in the latest episode, which you can see above.

Nerves? Too many cigarettes? Or something more sinister? The Peaky fandom are already demanding answers.

Well, here’s some slight comfort for those who are concerned for Tommy’s health: creator Stephen Knight has already confirmed that there will be two more seasons of Peaky Blinders before he brings the curtain down on the Birmingham-set show.

And with Tommy holding firm as both the head of the Shelby family and as the show’s clear tour-de-force, it’s pretty unlikely that the Brummie protagonist/anti-hero will be killed off by illness before we even reach the penultimate season of Peaky Blinders.

Sure, he could get sick – very sick, like tuberculosis-level sick – but he’ll likely still be able to carry out his MP/gang warlord duties from his sickbed: this is Tommy Shelby, after all.

It’ll be interesting to see how Tommy’s apparent illness develops in the remaining three episodes of season 5, though.

Because, you know, battling The Billy Boys and single-handedly bringing down Oswald Mosley’s Fascist Party isn’t enough trouble to be dealing with already…

Peaky Blinders airs every Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.

Esme Shelby (Aimee-Ffion Edwards) was last seen in Peaky Blinders season 4, fleeing with her children after having inadvertently causing the death of her husband John (Joe Cole).

Since then, Peaky Blinders has gone from strength to strength, recording its highest-ever viewing figures for the first two episodes of series five.

Now, the actress behind Esme, who has also starred in Luther, has weighed in on whether she could ever see herself returning to the Birmingham-set crime drama.

Speaking with Cosmopolitan UK, Edwards said: ‘It depends on the script. I feel like I got to do some really good stuff, and the storylines were really strong, and I could make the best of Esme.’

Although Esme’s fate in the Blinders’ world was never revealed, the Keeping Faith actress said she remains satisfied with her work as Esme, which saw her transform from the daughter of gypsies to a member of the Shelby clan through her marriage to the hot-headed and passionate John.

‘I think if the storyline was good, I would consider [returning]. I’m quite satisfied with what I got to do with [Esme],’ she revealed. ‘I’m open-minded but sometimes it’s nice to leave on a high.’

Whether or not Esme will return to avenge her husband’s death, Peaky Blinders fans have plenty to be getting on with for the moment as the fifth run of episodes passes the half-way mark with this Sunday – and a lot of drama is going to go down for the Shelby’s.

Whether it’s Sam Clafin’s ‘unreal’ turn as the villainous Oswald Mosley or the promise of an impending war as the fifth series hurtles towards its conclusion.

Peaky Blinders airs every Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.

Love Island stars Marcel Somerville and Yewande Biala give evidence to MPs as they describe ‘worst period’ of the show

Love Island stars Marcel Somerville and Yewande Biala gave evidence to MPs during a reality TV inquiry, with the former describing the ‘worst period’ of the show.

The pair appeared in front of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) select committee in Westminster, who are investigating whether enough support is offered throughout their time on and after the show.

The inquiry was sparked by the death of contestant Steve Dymond after he took a lie detector on The Jeremy Kyle Show, along with the suicides of Love Island stars Mike Thalassitis and Sophie Gradon.

Speaking at the inquiry, Marcel described how exiting the villa was the worst part of the experience, saying: ‘You are in the spotlight. No matter what you do, anything that happens there is going to be a story about it.

‘Public break-ups, everything that happens. You are like, “this is the worst period of my life.” That was the worst period of doing Love Island.’

The pair however were largely defensive of Love Island on a number of subjects, although they believe changes have been implemented – like increased guidance on social media – since the deaths of Mike and Sophie.

‘They definitely changed it now with what happened to Mike and Sophie,’ Marcel added.

The issue of body diversity was also raised, with Yewande believing it’s an issue which is unfairly levelled against the show – believing it’s a wider societal issue.

They both agreed however increased body diversity would ‘add something’ to the show.

Elsewhere at the inquiry, former Jeremy Kyle contestants Dwayne Davison and Robert Gregory will also provide evidence over their appearance on the show.

Iain Lee was struggling with suicidal thoughts at the lowest point in his depression.

The I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! star said he turned to the Samaritans three times when he felt suicidal.

However he insisted that he is in a ‘really good place’ at the moment and has learnt coping mechanisms to help him manage his mental health.

Speaking on a panel to mark the launch of Channel 5 documentary Suicidal: In Our Own Words, the 46-year-old said: ‘I’m in a really good place at the moment, I’m happy for the first time in a long long time.

‘I’ve had two months of actually being happy. I’m in the longest period of sustained happiness I’ve ever been in, I’m in love, I love my kids – one can be happy. I’ve learnt coping mechanisms: I meditate, go for a walk – little tricks that work for me – read a book.’

Referring to the darker moments in his life, he added: ‘I’m in a really privileged position as I have a few quid, I can afford private therapy. The Samaritans are amazing. I’ve called them when I wanted to kill myself, Samaritans have saved my life three times.’

‘I have two young boys I want them to grow up in a world where it’s OK to cry and it’s OK to ask people for help.’

Iain recently came out as bisexual after confessing he felt ‘shame and embarrassment’.

The radio host, who officially got divorced from his wife Helena this year, said on his TalkRadio show The Late Night Alternative, that he has only told a couple of people, and received unconditional love from those he opened up to.

The new series of The Great British Bake Off is underway, with contestants whipping up fig rolls and biscuit bars for Biscuit Week in the most recent episode.

John Whaite, a qualified pastry chef, has been there and done that with Bake Off, taking home the coveted cake plate trophy in 2012.

Asked what advice he would give this year’s batch of bakers, the 30-year-old urged them to stay true to themselves.

‘My advice is just to be prepared for the frenzy, the post Bake Off aftermath. But do not forget who you are,’ the chef told Metro.co.uk.

‘To thine own self be true. It’s very easy to get swept away with the tide. But the tide will slowly recede as it does, so enjoy it but don’t take it too seriously.’

He also opened up about turning to nature when he was struggling with depression.

John was at his lowest point while trying to complete his latest book A Flash In The Pan last year.

Deciding to ‘get away’ from it all, he volunteered to work on a farm in Canada for a while to rediscover his love of food.

During his time there, John got the opportunity to bake for the farmer he lived with as they had become like family to him.

He said: ‘I got a really bad bout of depression at the start of this year which was in the middle of finishing off the prose for the book. Everything else had been put to bed and shot but the actual introduction wasn’t quite finished.

‘I just had to get away. I had to leave. I felt like my conversation with food had run dry. But it hadn’t. As conversations do it had just dropped off. It was evolving in the background and being mulled over and thought about.

‘That time I took off I went to Canada and worked on a farm, that time away from it all really sparked a new interest and a new hunger for food.’

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bxx1SUHhAX5/

John decided to travel to Canada because he thought ‘the further I can get away from my life right now, the better’. He also found solace in the cold weather there.

‘I’ve always loved the wilderness and winter,’ he said.

‘I find deep comfort in that and I just thought – go and work on a farm in Canada.

‘I was really lucky that I met the kindest sweetest farmer who was just so kind and welcoming to me and allowed me to bake. That sparked my love of food back up.

‘I was baking not because I was writing a book or I had to teach my students, but I was baking for people who I loved and wanted to nourish.’

A Flash In The Pan is out now.

The upcoming launch of new streaming service Disney+ will allow for more Marvel stories to be told, and it has been reported that Robert will return as Tony once more in a voiceover capacity for rumoured new series Ironheart.

Ironheart follows Riri Williams, the teenage genius who continues Tony’s legacy in the comics, and according to We Got This Covered their source alleges that the company has got Downey Jr on board to voice Tony who will appear as an AI – similar to Paul Bettany’s J.A.R.V.I.S – and will help her train to become a superhero.

There are many overlaps here, including the fact in 2008 Tony built his first suit in a cave, and Riri built hers in the garage.

Fans are definitely not arguing with the idea, as they supported it as the news filtered through. It’s not the first time people have prophesied Tony’s time in the MCU (or Disney equivalent) would be done for good. And AI has been at the top of the list for many.

When Tony died in Endgame, Looper came up with many a way the character could return to the MCU – one of which being as AI to aid in Riri.

All very convenient, isn’t it?

‘A holographic Tony serving as the onboard AI for a character like Riri or Morgan [Stark] would be a nice way to bridge the gap to a new Iron Man, or he could even control an empty suit of armor himself,’ they previously prophesied.

Fans have long been theorising on how we will still get our fix of Iron Man, including Spider-Man Tom Holland inheriting Stark’s business and suit.

And Stark becoming his AI.

There’s a lot of theories about Tony Stark and AI, and Reddit went off at the idea several months ago.

See, this source news is not the first time people have been theorising Tony and AI together – albeit this is the strongest sign it might actually happen.

‘That way his character can continue to evolve and he wouldn’t necessarily be a major part of the MCU going forward, but he would still always be there,’ Reddit user CaptainSpaceWolf13 wrote.

‘Most recently in the comics Tony has “died” and uploaded his consciousness into an AI. This way he can still be a part of his world and can still help his friends, while technically being gone.

‘If Tony were to die in the MCU then this would be the best way for his character to go, and to make it even better he could become PP/SM’s new AI. This way Tony could still be a central father figure and mentor to Peter, all while taking a back seat to the future MCU while still being important.

‘In the past movies, there has definitely been a deep connection between the two characters and this happening in the future just really makes sense to me. Just imagine Tony dying at the end of Avengers 4 and then in an end-credits scene we see Peter getting ready to go do Spider-Man stuff and then boom we here Tony’s voice saying “hey kid” and the movie ends.’

Suppose we shall wait for news, but in the meantime think about how this could be moved over to the story of Ironheart.

Not long to wait now until we get to see the new series of Top Boy (Picture: Netflix)

The highly-anticipated new season of London crime drama Top Boy will be dropping on Netflix next week after six years off our screens.

Top Boy was dropped by Channel 4 five years ago and has now been revived for a new series by Netflix after Drake bought the rights to the show.

The Canadian rapper, who was a fan of the original show, has produced the new series which stars Ashley Walters as drug-lord Dushane and Kane Robinson as his ally Sully.

For viewers who aren’t familiar with the show yet, or simply want to refresh their memories, Netflix also have the first two seasons available to watch on their streaming service.

However, if you want to watch any of the old Top Boy seasons from its days on Channel 4, you’ll now need to search for Top Boy: Summerhouse on Netflix, as they’ve renamed the old show.

What is Top Boy Summerhouse and why have seasons 1 and 2 been renamed?

While the new Netflix series will pick up where the TV show left off, with Dushane returning from exile to reclaim his place in the highly lucrative London drug market, Netflix have confirmed that their version will actually be a brand new Top Boy series altogether.

The brand new season of Top Boy is right around the corner (Picture: Netflix)

To make this clearer for viewers and fans, the old Channel 4 show has been given the name Top Boy: Summerhouse on Netflix to help differentiate between the two.

The new title for the old show comes from the name of the fictional Summerhouse housing estate in Hackney, East London where the drama is set.

Why is Top Boy season 3 now called Top Boy season 1?

Netflix launched a trailer for the new series of Top Boy, which they labelled as a trailer for ‘Top Boy: Season 1’, back in August.

This will likely be in part down to the fact that there is a new cast and crew behind this latest instalment of the Top Boy franchise.

So Netflix are calling the new series of the show ‘Season 1’ because it is Top Boy Summerhouse is, in many ways, a brand new show.

When is the new Top Boy coming out?

The new season of Top Boy drops on Friday 13th September on Netflix.

The synopsis of the new series teases: ‘Dushane teams up with Sully (Kane Robinson), his spiritual brother, partner and sometime rival who is also returning to the same streets after his own form of exile – prison – comes to an end.

‘Awaiting them both is Jamie (Micheal Ward), the young, hungry and ruthless gang leader whose ambitions leave no place for Dushane and Sully.’

Courtney Act – real name Shane Janek – is backing Piers Morgan after he savagely admonished ex-DUP minister Jim Wells for his ‘bigoted’ refusal to watch Strictly Come Dancing if the show introduced same-sex couples.

RuPaul’s Drag Race star Courtney has voiced her support for the introduction of same-sex couples into Strictly, something which fans have wanted for years, after she danced with a male partner as her non-drag self, Shane.

The Celebrity Big Brother winner took to Twitter today, sharing a video of his time as a contestant on Dancing With The Stars Australia, when he performed with Joshua Keefe.

Courtney’s Twitter shared Shane and Joshua’s Tango and Foxtrot, for which they were awarded a near-perfect score of 29 out of 30.

The Bi Life presenter would go on to place second in Australia’s respective series of Dancing With The Stars, which isn’t bad going if you ask us!

Courtney ended the tweet with the poignant: ‘Quite beautiful and family-friendly? Yes.’

Piers would certainly agree after yesterday’s spat.

‘It’s about standing for tolerance and the way the world has gone, gay people no longer have to feel disenfranchised and something nasty,’ the former newspaper editor snapped at his rival.

‘We have all moved on from people like you coming on television saying I don’t want to see same-sex people dancing on television because it will be corruptive for our kids.’

Good Morning Britain airs each weekday morning from 6.30am on ITV while Strictly Come Dancing launches this Saturday at 7.20pm.

Ex-Jeremy Kyle contestant claims show ‘ruined his life’ as he gives evidence to MPs: ‘I wish I could die’

A former contestant on The Jeremy Kyle Show has claimed the show ‘ruined his life’ while giving evidence to MPs during a reality TV inquiry.

Robert Gregory and Dwayne Davison appeared in front of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) select committee in Westminster, who are investigating the treatment of contestants throughout their time on the show.

The inquiry was sparked by the death of contestant Steve Dymond after he took a lie detector test on The Jeremy Kyle Show, along with the suicides of Love Island stars Mike Thalassitis and Sophie Gradon.

Speaking at the inquiry, Dwayne Davison, who was branded the show’s ‘most hated’ guest back in 2014, said how the stigma he received has cost him jobs and has negatively impacted his mental health through social media abuse.

‘I couldn’t get rid of this weight of Jeremy Kyle around my shoulders,’ Dwayne said. ‘Everyone on my street knows, everyone I know knows. I just felt like I was in a nightmare of a movie.

‘And I still feel like this now. I just thought, you know what, I wish I could die. I know it sounds really brutal, but I thought, you know what I’ve lost that job, I’ve got to get into another job and they’ll kick me out again because it’s the same thing I can’t control, this Jeremy Kyle Show thing.’

Dwayne described how he attempted to take his own life in 2018 due to the stigma attached to him.

‘So all these things happened at once,’ Dwayne continued. ‘In 2018, I’d never done this before, I took 30 codeine tablets and I just went upstairs and I swallowed them all.

‘I don’t remember any of it but basically my partner told me they gave me an injection which made my lungs start working again. I just think the Jeremy Kyle Show, it might not be so direct, they don’t own my employer, but the Jeremy Kyle Show has indirectly ruined my life and I can’t stop it still ruining my life.

He added: ‘I feel like I can’t escape it basically. Even today I still feel like I’ve got the weight around my shoulders.’

Earlier in the inquiry, the pair described some of their treatment while on the show, claiming they were locked in a room for 10 hours by producers before they were allowed on set – with a runner outside on standby to answer questions.

‘I’m sat in a room all day, the smallest, tiniest room you’ve ever seen,’ Dwayne said. ‘One toilet, you get your phone taken off you and property to start with, and you sit in a room with a television which doesn’t work.

‘I’m sat in this room for ten hours and I had to knock on the door and the runner will open the door who’s sat outside. I’m sat in there for 10 hours with nothing to do. And my partner has been taken away from me.’

Dwayne Davison and Gregory

Shocked by the claim, an MP on the committee said: ‘I find it astonishing. It sounds horrific what you’re describing.

‘I think someone in police custody would have better rights than the treatment you were given before and after the show.’

Gregory said his appearance on the show was a ‘character assassination’, claiming he was falsely represented on the show as someone who ‘rejected his son 47 years ago’ despite telling producers beforehand he didn’t know he existed.

‘They crucified me,’ Gregory said about appearing on the show. ‘They absolutely ripped me apart.’

The pair also claimed aftercare on The Jeremy Kyle Show ‘doesn’t exist’, describing how they were simply offered £20 to buy a meal after the show.

The Jeremy Kyle show was axed on May 15 earlier this year, which was announced following the death of Steven Dymond who died from an overdose.

‘Given the gravity of recent events we have decided to end production of The Jeremy Kyle Show,’ Carolyn McCall, ITV’s CEO, said in a statement.

‘The Jeremy Kyle Show has had a loyal audience and has been made by a dedicated production team for 14 years, but now is the right time for the show to end.’

An ITV spokesperson previously issued a statement to Metro.co.uk on the show’s aftercare, saying: ‘The Jeremy Kyle Show has significant and detailed duty of care processes in place for contributors, pre, during and post show which have been built up over 14 years.’

The Big Bang Theory
Which Big Bang star would you like to see star in a spin-off? (Picture: CBS)

There’s been a Big Bang Theory hole in our lives ever since the show ended this year, and even though it will probably live on in reruns forever, it’s just not the same.

However, director Mark Cendrowski gave us a spark of joy this week when he teased there was a chance a spin-off could happen in the upcoming years… and now we’ve got our thinking caps on.

Just who could be the best for a spin-off, and what would it cover?

Sheldon (Jim Parsons) has already got his own prequel with the successful Young Sheldon series, documenting his time as a Brainiac in Texas with his family.

But we can always see what happens when he becomes a dad, and how he and wife Amy (Mayim Bialik) deal with everything that comes with being parents.

Same can be for Penny (Kaley Cuoco) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki) as it was revealed they were about to become parents too.

Maybe Raj’s quest for love could be a comedy goldmine? Considering 21st century dating is rife with disaster stories.

Or Howard and Bernadette, with their brood of children, and Stuart seemingly always close by as well.

The possibilities are endless – even Wil Wheaton could be coming back in his adventures around the Star Trek conventions could be prime for some comedy action.

So…who do you reckon would be the perfect character for a reboot?

Let us know here:

The Big Bang Theory airs on E4 and is available on Netflix.

And just to ramp up the anticipation further ahead of the arrival of the new episodes, Netflix have today (4 September) released a series of new Top Boy images to give fans another precious few glimpses at what’s to come.

Before Netflix green-lit the revival, the showrunners of Top Boy considered turning the show into a musical – but the idea was quickly dropped.

‘There was even talk of doing a musical, that didn’t go anywhere and so I just thought it was just gone,’ Ronan Bennett told Metro.co.uk recently.

Sharon Osbourne doesn’t hold back when she becomes the latest celebrity to trace her family tree in Who Do You Think You Are? this week.

The former X Factor judge hits out at Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn – calling him ‘repulsive’ – as she reflects on her family’s bloodline on the show.

‘Oh my God, he is revolting, so ugly, inside and out. This ugliness oozes from him, he’s repulsive,’ she says of the politician.

Sharon spends time on the BBC One show uncovering her family’s bloodline, as well as revealing the persecution her father, music manager Don, faced in the army for being Jewish.

She’s become known over the years for her outspokenness on the likes of The X Factor, and reality series The Osbournes, which focused on her life with husband Ozzy and family.

Here’s what you need to know about Sharon’s marriage to the Black Sabbath rocker.

Is Sharon Osbourne still with husband Ozzy Osbourne?

Sharon and Ozzy are still married, celebrating their 37th anniversary this year.

The pair began dating in 1979, with Sharon also becoming his manager – and they were married in Hawaii on 4 July 1982.

The marriage has been a tempestuous one, with the pair having had explosive fights over the years – and Sharon even admitting that she once drugged Ozzy in a bid to expose his infidelities.

She also opened up about her marital battles to the Telegraph in 2017, as well as the moment she discovered he had been having an affair with hairdresser Michelle Pugh.

He later underwent therapy for his sex addiction, with Sharon later saying: ‘I don’t trust him. I worry about that. I don’t trust him as far as I can throw him. Nothing in the world hurts like infidelity. Nothing.’

However the couple survived their rocky patch and renewed their wedding vows on their 35th anniversary in 2017.

Sharon shared the occasion on Instagram with a throwback image, saying: Thank you Ozzy for 35 crazy & wonderful years. Here’s to the next chapter of our lives. Love you more today than yesterday.’

They’re also parents to three children – daughters Aimee and Kelly and son Jack.

Sharon and Ozzy are grandparents also, to Jack’s children Pearl, Andy Rose and Minnie.

She told Loose Women earlier this year: ‘It brings sunshine into my house and when they’re there it’s what it’s all about.

‘I teach them – what goes on at nana’s stays at nana’s.’

Where do Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne live?

The couple used to own a seven-bedroom house in Amersham, Buckinghamshire but nowadays live in Los Angeles.
