He’s now one of their biggest pro dancers. But Kevin Clifton has revealed he was twice turned down by Strictly Come Dancing before he finally got on the show.
Ouch.
Furthermore, Kev thinks he was overlooked because he was favouring a goth look at the time. Pics please!
Speaking to fellow dancer Aljaz Skorjanec in a special Strictly doc airing tonight on BBC1, the reigning champion said: ‘I applied with [ex-wife] Karen.
‘She got the job, I didn’t get it. I had long black hair, eyeliner, black fingernails…
‘Don’t think that I’m your average ballroom dancer guys.
‘They said, “Yeah we’d love to take Karen. But not that guy – we have no need for this gothic scarecrow who thinks he’s the rock star of the ballroom.”’
The now-boyfriend of Stacey Dooley then continued: ‘Next year, you and Janette both got the job, I got told “no” again. I got turned down twice.
‘And then they went to film the trailer for the show that year.
‘The idea for the trailer was that all these Strictly stars would be dancing with an invisible partner, who’s it gonna be? That invisible partner was me. I just wanted a job.
‘That’s me in the Morphsuit, carrying all the Strictly pros about, but being rubbed out of the trailer.
‘And then about two, three days later is when I got the call to say we can have you on the show.’
Thank goodness he never gave up – he’s now a fan fave after all!
Kevin is this year paired with Anneka Rice, best known for her iconic 90s show Challenge Anneka. (Look it up – it’s great).
Kev recently hit back at reports that he’s ‘fuming’ over the pairing, saying on Twitter: ‘Oh it’s just ridiculous I just laugh nowadays. As usual a completely made up story.’
The first live show of Strictly Come Dancing 2019 is next Saturday 21 September. Strictly The Professionals airs today at 7pm.
