Morris dancer who wears blackface doesn’t believe it’s racist: ‘It is a form of disguise’

A Morris dancer who wears blackface has defended the act from claims of racism, believing it’s a ‘disguise’ which predates racial connotations.

John Ellis is part of a group who have performed Border Morris dancing in Hampshire since 1991, a type of Morris dancing which originates from English villages along the Wales-England border and is largely defined by its use of blackface.

Katie Kedward, who has afro-Caribbean heritage, was particularly shocked when she stumbled into the folk tradition during a walking weekend away, and recounted on ITV’s This Morning how she was left uncomfortable by the experience.

Speaking on the show, Katie said: ‘I was on a walking weekend with some friends and we stumbled across the folk gathering which initially I was quite excited about because I don’t often come into contact with English folk culture, so it’s something I wanted to learn more about.

‘But then I noticed some of the dancing groups there had fully blacked-up their faces, which is not something I’ve actually seen in England before.

‘I was initially very surprised and the longer I stayed the more uncomfortable I felt. As someone who has afro-Caribbean heritage, black face has a very specific meaning for people of my community, so it was a very odd experience and it made me feel like I couldn’t fully participate in the event.’

In response, John claimed the origins of Border Morris dancing predated any racial connotations and its association with minstrelsy, a 19th century form of American entertainment which used blackface to mock black people.

‘Back in the 1400s, which is where the earliest recorded events are, in the winter time farm workers would disguise themselves to beg, they couldn’t get anything from the land, they had no other income apart from the wealth of the landowners who used to own the cottages,’ John said.

‘So during the winter they would put rags on their jacket, maybe put bells on, disguise their faces usually from soot from the chimneys and beg, go back home, take it all off, no one was any the wiser, and the next day they went back to work without any trouble.’

This origin for Border Morris dancing, however, has been disputed. More recent sources have found connections of the dance to minstrelsy, with an account from 1957 referring to Border Morris dancing as a n***er dance’.

Asked if he understands that it has upsetting racial connotations, John claims it doesn’t have any connections to minstrelsy despite the evidence.

‘Personally we don’t think it does,’ John said. ‘I think the border Morris tradition in the UK also doesn’t think it does, because it predates any racial connotations, it has no connection with the things it’s being associated with at the moment in terms of Minstrelsy and whatever else.

‘It way predates all that stuff, and it is purely a form of disguise, whatever reason you’re using for it, it’s just a disguise.’

John doesn’t believe it’s racist (Picture: ITV)

Asked why they can’t simply change the colour of the face, John said: ‘We discuss this a lot and our take on this is it’s integral to our ethos, to what we do and how we look. And if it becomes a real problem in the world at large, we’ll probably just stop.

‘Changing for a different colour or taking it off altogether as I am today, just doesn’t seem to work. We don’t black our faces and wear ordinary clothes, we’re not going out to mock anybody or to be in any way racially abusive, it’s a costume.

‘We put this stuff on or long jackets, and we black our faces as a disguise, we wear crazy sunglasses and silly hats, and when we dance, we dance 30 times a year at festivals, fates and corporate events, and in 28 years we’ve probably had four complaints.’

Katie Kedward disputed John’s claims over not connecting to minstrelsy (Picture: ITV)

Defending herself from potential claims she’s just being a ‘snowflake’, Katie said: ‘Maybe because I’m a young woman it can be quite easy to dismiss my experiences as being this snowflake millennial, but another way to look at offence is causing hurt to somebody who has done nothing to you.

‘And whether you find it easy to dismiss my experiences, you should also consider that an elderly lady who has felt racism all through her life will also be feeling the same, as will a young child, so I think we need to think about the broader cultural context that blackface has attached to it regardless of the intention.’

James Cracknell reveals horrific bike crash will make Strictly Come Dancing even harder: ‘It’s really scary’

James Cracknell has opened up about the difficulties of taking on Strictly Come Dancing following his bike crash, describing the idea of being judged ‘really scary’.

The 47-year-old rowing champion and double Olympic gold medallist was involved in a life-threatening crash in 2010, where he was a hit by a truck while on a bike in Arizona, US.

James suffered a serious injury to the frontal lobe of his brain which affected his personality and memory, and opened up about how the crash made the idea of going on Strictly Come Dancing even more difficult.

Asked by Phillip Schofield on This Morning about whether the crash altered his view of life, James said: ‘To be honest, it alters not my view. Because especially with an injury in the head, it’s not something people can see, it’s not like a broken arm or a broken leg, from my eyes the world was normal whereas other people are treating me differently.

James Cracknell and Luba Mushtuk

‘You feel they’re, maybe through a lack of knowledge, judging you. And actually doing something you’ve never done before and then being judged by people, it’s a really scary thing to put yourself into.’

Asked if it changed his personality, James replied: ‘Yeah definitely in terms of how other people perceive you, and therefore you almost actually back off the social interactions.

‘It also questions was that behaviour me or is that behaviour related to the accident? Over time, that’s one of the reasons why I went back to study at the University of Cambridge last year, to show I can do that, to show I can do the boat race, and actually this is another way of learning a routine which happens most the time.’

James, who has been partnered with Luba Mushtuk on Strictly, is set to dance the Tango to Spandau Ballet’s Gold on the first live show this Saturday.

Speaking about training, James said: ‘Being a sportsman you don’t show any weakness you just know what you’re good at and you stick to that, whereas actually doing something you’re bad at and throwing yourself into it, is a totally new experience.

‘I’m just getting over that bar of just letting yourself go and actually really learning. I think we limit ourselves and we’re afraid to put ourselves out there.’

Lord Of The Rings has shared another cryptic teaser for fans this week (Picture: Warner)

With Amazon dropping yet more hints that filming of the much-hyped Lord of The Rings TV series is underway, what other info have the streaming service released?

The Lord Of The Rings TV show will follow a different story to the famous films by Peter Jackson and Amazon revealed the prequel is set in the Second Age of Middle-Earth. Tolkien scholar Tom Shippey confirmed that Amazon will have to stay true to Tolkien’s written history of Middle Earth and absolutely not stray into either the First or Third Age of the world from the author’s novels.

The events in the LOTR films take place at the end of the Third Age and as J R. R. Tolkien’s Second Age spans over 3,000 years in the books, the show producers have still got plenty of stories to choose from.

The show, helmed by Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’s JA Bayona, is thought to be focused on the story of rise of Sauron, the omniscient evil baddie from the movies and books.

Confirming his involvement, JA Bayona said: ‘JRR Tolkien created one of the most extraordinary and inspiring stories of all time, and as a lifelong fan it is an honour and a joy to join this amazing team.

‘I can’t wait to take audiences around the world to Middle-Earth and have them discover the wonders of the Second Age, with a never before seen story.’

When is Lord Of The Rings released on Amazon Prime?

Lord Of The Rings is expected to air on Amazon Prime Video in 2021, but there has been no air date or schedule confirmed yet for the much-anticipated show, which hasn’t even finished shooting yet.

Amazon Prime have been teasing fans with cryptic clues about the series, most recently sharing an emoji of New Zealand’s flag, prompting people speculate that this is an indicator the series has finally started shooting in the country famous for being Middle Earth in the award-winning film trilogy.

As the show’s creators have got a whopping 20 episodes to make, let’s hope the fan theories are true and they have indeed started shooting.

Who is in the cast of Lord of The Rings on Amazon?

Earlier this month, reports in Variety claimed that The Revenant star Will Poulter had been cast in a leading role in the Lord Of The Rings series, however like much of the detail surrounding the series, this remains unconfirmed.

Likewise, people are tipping acting legend Sir Ian McKellen to return as Gandalf, but the 80-year-old revealed in an interview with Graham Norton that he hasn’t yet been asked to reprise his role as the white-bearded wizard: ‘What do you mean, another Gandalf? I haven’t said yes because I haven’t been asked. But are you suggesting that someone else is going to play it? Gandalf is over 7,000 years old, so I’m not too old.’

The only confirmed casting for the series is actress Markella Kavenagh, who will play a character called Tyra.

American Horror Story 1984 might very well be the ultimate slasher series of all time. Taking place in a summer camp, it features influences from classic scary movies such as Friday 13th and Sleepaway Camp, as well as Halloween and I Know What You Did Last Summer.

Two of the show’s biggest stars – Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters – both of whom have appeared in the previous eight seasons – have stepped down as cast members for season nine (barring expected cameo appearances).

That’s not to say there won’t be plenty of acting talent, as Emma Roberts, Cody Fern, Billie Lourd, Leslie Grossman and John Carroll Lynch will be featuring in the season.

Dedicated American Horror Story fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival of yet another disturbing masterpiece, but when is it expected to land in the UK?

When is the American Horror Story 1984 UK air date?

If you haven’t caught up on previous seasons, you better settle in for a binge-watch tonight, because American Horror Story 1984 will be released on Fox tomorrow (19 September).

For once, the US aren’t too far ahead of us in the UK – as it only came out across the pond today on FX – but best to stay off social media if you don’t want to see accidental spoilers.

Expect plenty of 80s fashion, aerobics and big hair, along with blood, guts and screams (after all, there are two Scream Queens – Emma and Billie – in this season).

And it seems fans only want more, as season 10 has already been announced and is expected to drop in September, 2020.

Previous seasons were Murder House, Asylum, Coven, Freak Show, Hotel, Roanoke, Cult and Apocalypse.

What does Amazon’s Lord Of The Rings filming location mean? Fans speculate we’re heading back to the Shire

The new Lord Of The Rings series will return to New Zealand (Picture: New Line Cinema)

Amazon has revealed filming on their Lord Of The Rings TV series will take place in New Zealand, the original birthplace of Peter Jackson’s movie trilogy.

The streaming platform has confirmed pre-production on the show is underway, with production to kick off in Auckland, New Zealand in the coming months.

In a statement, showrunners and executive producers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay said: ‘As we searched for the location in which we could bring to life the primordial beauty of the Second Age of Middle-Earth, we knew we needed to find somewhere majestic, with pristine coasts, forests, and mountains, that also is home to world-class sets, studios, and highly skilled and experienced craftspeople and other staff.

‘And we’re happy that we are now able to officially confirm New Zealand as our home for our series based on stories from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord Of The Rings.

‘We are grateful to the people and the government of New Zealand and especially Auckland for supporting us during this pre-production phase. The abundant measure of Kiwi hospitality with which they have welcomed us has already made us feel right at home, and we are looking forward to deepening our partnership in the years to come.’

But what does a return to New Zealand mean for the show? Aside from being a heart-warming return to the origins of the classic movies, some fans have speculated this could mark a return to Hobbiton in the Shire, aka the home of Frodo and Bilbo Baggins.

So could it happen? Probably not, unless the show takes some significant liberties with Lord Of The Rings lore.

The new show is set to take place in the Second Age, a time period where Hobbits had yet to settle or establish the Shire – with the first Hobbits given permission by King Argeleb II to settle there in the year 1600 of the Third Age.

In fact, the whereabouts of the Hobbits during the Second Age is unknown generally – something which could be addressed should the show decide to throw Hobbits into the mix.

Where are the Hobbits in the Second Age? (Picture: New Line Cinema)

The fact they’re filming in New Zealand however likely means they’ll return to sets of other locations, including the Elvish kingdom of Rivendell at Kaitoke Regional Park and Gondor in the Mackenzie Country.

The Second Age is a period spanning 3441 years which ends with the downfall of Sauron, as depicted in the opening scenes of Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring.

Will Poulter and actress Markella Kavenagh are set to star in the series, with the first two episodes helmed by Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Orphanage director JA Bayona.

Amazon’s Lord Of The Rings will go into production in the coming months.

Stacey Dooley Sleeps Over Picture shows (L-R): Adele, baby Kai, Matt and Stacey Dooley

Stacey Dooley stayed with a family who believe in ‘off-grid’ parenting for her new documentary series Stacey Dooley Sleeps Over.

On the show she joins Matt Allen, his wife Adele and their children – son Ulysses, daughter Ostra and baby Kai – in their council house in Brighton.

The family previously appeared on This Morning in 2017, and didn’t reaction when Ostra weed on the floor.

In Stacey’s new show, Matt insists that he won’t find full time work because it’s ‘not in my psyche’.

Stacey asks him: ‘How do you do it all, Matt, is it benefits?’

He answers: ‘Mostly, mostly, but we claim the very bottom line.’

All three children co-sleep with Matt and Adele in the same room, and the couple support natural living.

Their kids, who are not vaccinated, don’t have a set bed time, can eat whatever they want and aren’t allowed mainstream medicine.

At one point in the programme Ulysses is seen eating a meal of raw mushrooms and Brussels sprouts, and crisps.

Matt, who has an autoimmune disease, tells Stacey that he doesn’t believe they are ‘abusing the system’.

‘ I really don’t think we are, because we have a minimalist impact on society in many respects.

‘In regards to social systems – schools and the NHS – we save money on that. Adele didn’t have births at hospital so we saved money on that.

‘So in our own unique weird wonderful way we balance the books.’

Stacey finds out that Matt believes in fasting and wouldn’t encourage the children to eat if they didn’t want to.

‘I’m a big fan of fasting – even the dog does it sometimes,’ he tells her.

Adele gave birth to her children with no medical intervention, with only Matt by her side.

The couple also had ‘lotus births’, where the placenta and umbilical cords are not surgically removed at birth. Instead Adele carried the placenta in a cool bag around with her until it fell off naturally.

Writer Adele previously said of their controversial lifestyle: ‘Off-grid is moving towards self sustainability and being a bit more free range and less institutionalised.’

Stacey Dooley Sleeps Over airs Wednesdays at 10pm on W.

Big Brother’s Kate Lawler praised for opening up about not wanting kids: ‘You get judged if you say it’

Kate Lawler has been praised for opening up about not wanting children, during a stint on Loose Women.

The Big Brother winner appeared on the ITV show in an attempt to break the stigma surrounding women who don’t want to start a family, explaining she has been judged for her decision in the past.

And the 39-year-old, who is engaged to fiancé Martin (Boj), revealed it previously left her wondering if there was ‘something wrong with her’.

‘I’m 40 next year, we’re getting married and I feel, “Should I be having a baby?” but the problem is, not all women want to have children,’ she told the panel.

‘Maternal ambivalence is on the rise, more women are freezing their eggs, choosing a career over motherhood, and I think that’s because women are finally being true to themselves and doing what’s right for them instead of what society tells them to do.

‘You get judged if you say you don’t want children.’

Kate explained she hasn’t looked into freezing her eggs, revealing Boj really wants to start a family, and assumed she would change her mind at some point during their relationship.

‘He really does [want a baby]. We do have differing views,’ she continued. ‘It’s really tricky because we’ve been together for six years and I think he thought I’d eventually change my mind…

‘I’ve never had a loud biological clock ticking, it comes with all kinds of emotions, it’s quite a complicated feeling to have, because some days I’ll be like, “What’s wrong with me? I should be feeling I want kids, I’m 39.”’

When Gloria Hunniford asked whether she would ever want to ‘give’ her beau a child if she loved him that much, Kate insisted this was something she would never consider.

‘I’ve always felt I wasn’t going to be a mum to children. Since I was 18 I’ve always been saying I’m not going to have kids,’ she added.

‘I can’t just have a baby because Bodge wants to have a baby, I have to want it myself. My biggest fear is having a baby I was pressurised into having.

‘He’s not pressurising me.’

Fans watching on at home were impressed with the reality star, rushing to Twitter to praise her for speaking out.

‘So, so good to listen to @katelawler openly talk about not wanting children,’ one posted. ‘Having children is a choice, it is not compulsory. It’s all about respect. I’m 31 now and have known since I was about 19 that I didn’t want any of my own.’

‘It’s totally fine to just say you don’t want kids or couldn’t have children and leave it at that. You don’t have to explain yourself to anyone even if they do ask for you to elaborate you don’t have to,’ another suggested. ‘It’s not taboo and you aren’t weird for not wanting kids #LooseWomen.’

While a viewer said: It’s funny how some judgemental mothers who say comments about how you don’t know true love until you have a baby and yet all they do is complain and post shite on Facebook all day about how hard it is. Nah I’ll stick to dogs thanks #LooseWomen.’

And a Twitter user added: ‘So glad they’re speaking about this! I’m in my mid 20’s and I know for sure that I’m never having children & ever since I can remember I always said I never wanted children in my life, so my mind definitely won’t change! I’m very lucky my boyfriend is exactly the same #LooseWomen.’

The Capture episode 4 spoiler photos: What happens to Shaun Emery after Hannah Roberts’ death?

Where is Shaun Emery in The Capture episode 4? (Picture: BBC)

*Warning: This article contains spoilers from episode 3 of The Capture.

The Capture delivered the blow we all knew was coming but were dreading since CCTV footage showed Hannah Roberts being dragged off by what appeared to be Shaun Emery.

Her body was found in the back of Shaun’s (Callum Turner) mate’s car boot and, in turn, we have a lot of questions.

Did Mat Forester (Tommy McDonell) kill the barrister? Has he been playing us all for a fool all along? We’d be naïve to trust anyone thus far, but Mat – Really?

Something’s off and it’s only going to be more of a headache from here on in. However, BBC have released the first look at episode four and there’s plenty of tea to spill already.

So what can we squeeze out of this?

Rachel Carey catches up with Shaun but can she talk him around?

Last we saw of Shaun he was hovering over Hannah’s (Laura Haddock) body, the police were right behind him and Rachel Carey (Holliday Granger) – the only person who can save him – was on her way to grab him first. However, it looks Shaun has legged it and is talking to what appears to be Rachel from the side of the road.

Will she be able to talk him around? Rachel has finally uncovered the mother of all mysteries surrounding the CCTV footage which clearly shows Shaun dragging Hannah off to her death.

Will he listen? We are counting down the days until we find out.

Rachel confronts Danny Hart

Rachel confronts Danny Hart in The Capture
What will Danny have to say for himself? (Picture: BBC)

Discovering the truth behind the video which could put Shaun behind bars, Rachel also realised her lover Danny Hart has been lying to her all this time. Though, considering he’s a married man perhaps she shouldn’t have been too surprised.

Danny was hailed a hero after managing to catch four suspected terrorists on CCTV, only Rachel was educated by Marcus Levy (Paul Ritter) about ‘the wipe’.

Ben Mills as Danny Hart
Danny looks rattled (Picture: BBC)

Rachel was adamant she saw Shaun enter a random townhouse, despite DS Nadia Latif (Ginny Holder) and DS Patrick Flynn (Cavan Clerkin) parked outside its door with not a single Shaun insight.

And Hannah’s kidnapping seemed impossible to stage until there was one common denominator – the wipe, the object crossing the frame and blocking the transition from the live-feed and what has already been recorded. Taking another look at the video which put four suspected terrorists behind bars, and what did Rachel find? The wipe.

Danny knew that tape was corrupt and that the evidence against Shaun was just as phony. He’s spent every opportunity trying to deter Rachel from getting the truth and it looks like we may be about to find out why.

The Capture continues Tuesday at 9pm on BBC One.

Singletown goes overseas tonight as Sophie gets whisked away to Barcelona by Mason, which will go down as well as a slap to the face with George.

It’s been a turbulent week for Singletown’s most complicated love triangle after George spilled to Sophie that Mason, who she’s been cosying up to since day one, already tried it on with his date.

No prizes for guessing what hit the fan.

Naturally Sophie had doubts, but George will be absolutely fuming when he sees what happened next.

‘If we want to move forward you’ll have to put the graft in,’ Sophie warned Mason last night. And he did just that.

Sophie’s boxer new squeeze upped his game and took the aspiring army medic out for dinner in one of the most romantic cities in the world as part of a two day trip, so needless to say it’s getting serious. Really serious.

Serenaded with roses, and a fancy pants dinner in the city centre – Sophie is living her best life and George is quite literally a million miles away.

Although, he had his best date of the series last night with mega babe Lydia…

This week we’ll reach the finale of Singletown as the couples decide if they want to stick with their ex or carry on with the single life.

So far we’ve said goodbye to Charlie and Elliott, and Natasha and Luke who recently announced they’re expecting their first baby together, falling pregnant just after their Singletown exit.

Singletown continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2.

Breaking Bad movie El Camino will feature over 10 characters from the show

Breaking Bad
Breaking Bad movie El Camino is bringing back a bunch of characters (Picture: AMC)

Breaking Bad movie El Camino will include 10 ‘familiar’ characters from the show, but could one of them be Walter White?

The new movie picks up after the season five finale, where Jesse escaped his white supremacist captors in a Chevrolet El Camino and drove to freedom.

In an interview with creator Vince Gilligan and lead star Aaron Paul on The Hollywood Reporter, it’s been confirmed 10 characters including Jesse Pinkman will feature in the movie.

‘El Camino centers on what happens to Jesse after he drives out of that compound covered in physical and psychological scars, and it features more than 10 familiar characters from the show,’ the report states.

Three of these places are taken up already by the confirmed Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), Skinny Pete (Charles Baker), and Brandon ‘Badger’ Mayhew (Matt Jones).

But who could the rest be? Many are expecting Walter White (Bryan Cranston) to make some sort of appearance in a flashback or dream sequence, after the character died in season five.

Better Call Saul
Could Saul Goodman be back? (Picture: Rex Features)

This leaves the door wide open for the return of Skyler White (Anna Gunn), Marie Schrader (Betsy Brandt), and Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk), meaning the movie could offer more answers to everyone’s whereabouts than perhaps expected.

In the same interview, Aaron also explained how filming on the original five season was a difficult experience in the early years.

‘The first couple of years were really torturous for me,’ Aaron said.

Describing what would happen after shooting wrapped for the day, Aaron added: ‘I found myself in dark alleys in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at 3 in the morning, just to try and get more information, which was not a good thing.

‘I just didn’t want to mess it up, and so I stayed in that guy’s skin, but I learned from Bryan [Cranston] it’s OK to shake it off and wash up at the end of the night and just have time for yourself.’

Despite describing the Breaking Bad finale as like a ‘big weight off of my shoulders’, it didn’t take much convincing to return for a movie with creator Vince Gilligan.

Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul in Breaking Bad
Will Walter White make a flashback cameo? (Picture: AMC)

Aaron said: ‘I’m like everybody else on the planet – I think Vince and the rest of the writers really nailed the landing with the ending of Breaking Bad, and why mess with that?

‘But it’s Vince we’re talking about. I would follow Vince into a fire. That’s how much I trust the man. I would do anything that he asked me to.’

An official synopsis for El Camino reads: ‘Written and directed by Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan, the movie follows fugitive Jesse Pinkman as he runs from his captors, the law, and his past.’

America’s Got Talent finale: Kodi Lee’s epic journey as he’s tipped to win season 14 – with Simon Cowell’s approval

The America’s Got Talent final results are around the corner and Kodi Lee could be moments away from being crowned winner of the show’s 14th season.

The 22-year-old from Southern California is possibly the most deserving contestant in the history of the show and has continually impressed judges Simon Cowell, Gabrielle Union, Howie Mandel and Julianne Hough.

Kodi was born with optic nerve hypoplasia and survived life-saving surgery when he was just five days old, later being diagnosed with autism aged four.

He’s also a musical prodigious savant who has an audio photographic memory – meaning he can recall music he hears after listening to it just once.

Having performed on the America’s Got Talent stage four times, Kodi has always wowed with his musical ability.

So let’s take a look back at his epic journey one last time before the results come in.

When Kodi Lee won Gabriella Union’s golden buzzer in his first audition

Kodi’s first performance saw him catapulted through to the quarterfinals thanks to Gabrielle and her golden buzzer.

The talented contestant tugged at all the judges’ heartstrings with his emotional piano rendition of Donny Hathaway’s A Song For You, and we were all completely blown away.

‘What just happened there was extraordinary, I mean really extraordinary,’ Simon said.

Gabrielle Union and Kodi
Gabrielle was moved by Kodi’s performance (Picture: NBC)

‘I don’t know what it’s like to live in Kodi’s world, all I can tell is that obviously you have an amazing relationship, the two of you, and your voice is absolutely fantastic.

‘Thank you so much for trusting us on this show,’ he added. ‘I’m going to remember this moment for the rest of my life.’

Meanwhile, Gabrielle added: ‘You just want to give your kids the moon, the stars and the rainbows. Tonight, I’m going to give you something special.’

Yes, tears were shed.

When Kodi Lee became a viral sensation

Kodi’s audition quickly became a viral sensation and has since amassed impressive 45 million views on YouTube.

Actually, all four of Kodi’s performances have taken off online and have racked up a load of interest.

Yep, he’s pretty legendary.

When Kodi Lee left Simon Cowell choked up during the quarterfinals

Kodi managed to move Simon so much during his battle for a spot in the semi-finals that the music mogul became pretty emotional.

After singing Simon and Garfunkle’s Bridge Over Troubled Water, the judge enthused: ‘You continually amaze me.

‘We are nothing without people like you… but most importantly, you are genuinely one of the most extraordinary people and talents we’ve had the great fortune to have on any show we’ve ever made.’

This really doesn’t happen often.

When Simon Cowell gave Kodi Lee the best news thanks to Paul Simon

After getting all emotional about Kodi’s performance, Simon delivered some of the most amazing news from Paul Simon.

‘I want to thank Paul Simon, who never really gives permission for anyone to sing this song,’ Simon told Kodi after his rendition.

‘It’s very precious to him, and he gave [Kodi] clearance within 30 minutes because he saw your audition.’

When Simon Cowell branded Kodi Lee ‘one of the most special, talented contestants’

Simon sang Kodi’s praises once again after he sang Calum Scott’s You Are The Reason’ in the semi-finals.

‘Your story is unbelievable. But now let’s take it back to your talent,’ he said. ‘Every time you come on, particularly tonight, you put your twist on a song that makes you, in my opinion, one of the most special, talented contestants.’

Honestly, Simon can’t get enough of Kodi and we reckon that’s a very good sign indeed.

When Kodi Lee went out with a bang with his final performance

Kodi’s last performance on the America’s Got Talent stage was a gorgeous version of Freya Ridings’ Lost Without You.

Unsurprisingly, the judges were once again bowled over by his vocal abilities with Simon telling him the rendition was ‘one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard.’

‘The whole world would be lost if we didn’t have Kodi Lee,’ Gabrielle added.

Surely Kodi has secured the win?

The final of America’s Got Talent airs tonight at 8pm on NBC in the US.

Ross Geller’s exes claim they were ‘wronged’ by Friends and demand justice from Central Perk gang

Ross Geller was seriously unlucky in love – but most of the time it was his own fault (Picture: NBC)

Ross Geller (David Schwimmer) was the unluckiest out of all the Friends stars when it came to the romance department, clocking up three failed marriages in the 10 years the show was on air.

The palaeontologist left a trail of doomed romances in his wake, from poor Bonnie who shaved her head, to Emily, who still married him even after he said the wrong name at the altar.

Which still gives us horror flashbacks to this day.

And his worst nightmare has come true as two of his exes, Elizabeth (Alexandra Holden) and Mona (Bonnie Somerville), have banded together to fight their corner, insisting they were wronged.

Not only that, the pair have taken a second to defend all the Friends exes of the past, ‘demanding justice’ for those who had been cast aside and never spoken of again.

‘We’ve been wronged,’ Alexandra fumed, resurrecting her role of student Elizabeth. ‘Did the friends even like anybody but each other?’

Mona dumped Ross after he got Rachel pregnant (Picture: NBC)

‘They only let one person into the circle for good and that was Paul Rudd,’ Bonnie continued.

‘Sure, fine, he doesn’t age. But what does Mike Hannigan have that Mona doesn’t?’

The Elizabeth actress questioned: ‘Does Theodore and Bitsy’s Park Avenue penthouse make him better than Pete Becker, the inventor of Moss 865? Or Janine, the inventor of clean, dry towels?’

Well, Theodore and Bitsy’s place did have 13 bathrooms.

Friends cast
Not all of the Friends exes were wronged… (Picture: NBC)

Not that Phoebe used any of them to throw up, but anyway…

‘So today I ask you to band together to honour the exes of Friends,’ ‘Mona’ explained to Entertainment Weekly, while ‘Elizabeth’ added: ‘And Ross, we knew the whole time that it wasn’t frowned upon.’

Shots. Fired.

But, to be fair to the Central Perk gang, not all the exes were wronged – Gary shot a bird, let’s not forget, and Chip Matthews was very slimy.

And don’t even get us started on Paolo…

Friends is available to stream now on Netflix.

The Walking Dead season 10: Michonne’s exit could bring back Rick Grimes

The Walking Dead season 10: Michonne's exit to bring back Rick Grimes?
Will Rick Grimes be back for Michonne’s exit in The Walking Dead? (Picture: AMC)

The Walking Dead could be bringing back some of the most prolific figures from the past nine seasons in the build-up to Michonne’s impending exit.

Showrunner Angela Kang has confirmed major flashbacks are coming and while most will be tied in with Siddiq’s memories from being captured by the Whisperers, there’s every chance we’ll be delving into other characters’ past, potentially bringing in a slew of heroes from days gone by.

Rick Grimes? Carl Grimes? Glenn Rhee? Abraham Ford? The possibilities are endless…

‘Yes, I will say that there’s some flashbacks this season,’ she told Entertainment Weekly. ‘One of the things we were kind of dealing with in the season has to do with illusion and people’s fears and what’s real, what’s not, the weight of the past on people.

‘So, we’ll definitely see some windows into the past that kind of shed light on the present. It should be interesting.’

‘There is some other stuff going on,’ Kang continued, suggesting the impossible will be possible. ‘There’s some pretty cool stuff, I think.’

Naturally, we’re rooting for a Rick return. While we have the sheriff’s movie trilogy to look forward to, it seems apt Andrew Lincoln would come back for Michonne’s exit, the only inevitability we have going forward.

However, we have no idea if she’ll be one of the few to leave the zombie epic with their life intact. But we do know she’ll have a romance with King Ezekiel on her way out.

‘I’m excited to have the audience see Danai’s work during this last arc on the show because she’s just amazing,’ Angela told TV Line. ‘She brings so much to every episode she’s in.’

The Walking Dead returns to AMC on October 7 and will follow a day later on FOX UK.

Gemma Collins has asked I’m A Celebrity bosses for a chance to return to the jungle after she spectacularly quit the show.

The 38-year-old TOWIE star previously appeared on the reality show back in 2014, leaving the show within days after suffering panic attacks and deciding it ‘wasn’t for her’.

It now seems Gemma is hoping for a second chance, after reportedly contacting ITV bosses about the possibility of returning for the new series.

Speaking during a recording of Celebrity Juice (via The Mirror), Gemma told host Keith Lemon she’d contacted producers about going back in the jungle.

Gemma said: ‘They told me, “The magic wouldn’t be there because you’ve already been in,” and I said, “Honey, if I’m in there, I’ll bring the magic”.’

Metro.co.uk has reached out to Gemma’s reps and ITV, with the latter declining to comment.

It’s also believed Gemma’s in talks to return to Dancing On Ice, after proving to be a rating success on the series earlier this year.

The rumours for this year’s I’m A Celebrity are well underway, including Love Island’s Maura Higgins, Freddie Flintoff, Richard Madeley and more.

Made In Chelsea’s Jamie Laing is also rumoured to be a contestant, after recently being forced to quit Strictly Come Dancing following a foot injury.

Dad horrified as daughter gives him topless photo of herself with his ex-wife as a gift

A daughter has seriously pushed the boundaries when it comes to her relationship with her parents by posing for a topless photo with her mum and gifting it to her dad.

Sandra and Mariah had already demonstrated their extremely close bond by getting naked spray tans, but they decided to take it to the next level by modelling in their birthday suits in tonight’s sMothered.

Mariah then went the extra mile and gave her dad Adrian a framed print out of her and her mum, his ex-wife, over an intimate family dinner.

Ahead of revealing the pics, a worried Mariah told the camera: ‘I am so nervous as to how they are going to react.’

Mariah then smiled mischievously telling her dad that she’d recently done a photoshoot with her mum, explaining: ‘The photoshoot was a photoshoot that I wanted to do for mum, that would boost her confidence and show the world that we embrace our bodies and that we’re cute!’

Mariah shows the picture

A suspicious Adrian replied: ‘So you put her in some clothes her age or in some clothes your age?’

‘We put her in some clothes that were sexy, and clothes don’t have an age,’ Mariah coyly answered.

Adrian on sMothered
Adrian couldn’t understand why Mariah and her mum would pose topless (Picture: TLC)

Eventually, Mariah presented the framed photo and Adrian wasn’t best pleased about it.

‘What the f**k is this?’ he asked before getting more aggravated. What is this for? Why would you even do this? What are you going to do with this?’

‘We’re gonna hang it up in the house,’ giggled Mariah.

But Adrian was still riled by the revelation, adding: ‘What kind of family portrait is that?’

Defending the picture, Mariah said she went for it ‘because we have nice, curvaceous bodies and we embrace our bodies and I wanted her to feel sexy.’

Mmmkay.

sMothered airs tonight at 10pm on TLC in the US.

Olivia Attwood looked glum in the sunshine on Wednesday as she was accused of bullying Towie co-star Chloe Meadows.

The former Love Island star was pictured keeping a close eye on her phone after she was forced to defend her actions and words towards Chloe.

In a bright pink bikini, Olivia was joined by pals around the pool in Marbella where she is filming an upcoming season of The Only Way Is Essex in Marbella.

On Sunday’s episode of the ITV reality show, Olivia and Pete Wicks were accused by viewers of bullying, and Liv hit back, insisting ‘it is not bullying to have an opinion, they are two different things’.

Olivia, 26, rose to fame on the third season of Love Island, which aired in 2017.

She recently made an explosive debut on Towie, with fans originally branding her ‘the best thing to happen to Towie’.

The reality star originally made a cameo on Towie with footballer boyfriend Bradley Deck back in April but now she’s been hit with criticism, and she admitted that she felt that some of the cast members ‘don’t like me at all’.

‘There’s been a lot of drama between me and Courtney and Chloe since I’ve joined,’ she told Mail Online.

There healthy competition between this year’s Strictly celebs (Picture: Getty Images)

There’s definitely a bit of healthy competition between this year’s Strictly Come Dancing stars, according to one of this year’s contestants James Cracknell.

The celebs are all part of a group chat where they send encouraging messages to each other at the end of a hard day of training.

But they mean business as well, so there’s plenty of trash talking in between the inspirational notes.

Athlete James, who is partnered with Luba Mushtuk, told Metro.co.uk: ‘It’s very supportive. In terms of competition, you’re competing with yourself and you don’t want to let your partner down. So it’s weirdly very supportive.

‘Having been involved in sport it’s much more cut-throat in that sense.’

Asked if there was any fightin’ talk involved, he said: ‘Naturally! We’re ripping each other apart but in a very nice way.’

The 47-year-old also revealed that fellow Strictly star David James like to show off his creativity to the other celebs.

‘Sometimes people just reveal a different side to themselves as you get to know them. David James is incredibly artistic. He’ll just like train all day and then post a painting he’s done,’ James added.

The rower also hopes to see Made In Chelsea star Jamie Laing in the audience when the show kicks off on Saturday night.

Jamie was forced to quit the show after suffering an injury during rehearsals.

Praising the reality TV star’s ‘energy’, James said: ‘The way he throws himself into life anyway and then to do Strictly – he’s not afraid to look stupid. So that’s a good way of learning.’

The sportsman attended the Southampton International Boat Show, which has been billed as the most environmentally friendly show yet.

He explained: ‘Being that close to water, the impact that we have on the oceans is right in front of you so the message is easily got across.’

And he does his bit to help the planet buy cutting down on what he throws away.

James said: ‘One of the biggest things that we do that has an impact on the environment, is that a third of the food that we buy we throw away.

‘It’s the impact on the environment of the land that’s used to grow it, or farm the animals on it, and then the transport and refrigeration. All that impact, and then if you end up throwing it in the bin, all that impact on the environment is being wasted. So for me it’s just buy what you need.’

Forget Harrison Ford’s The Fugitive, because Kiefer Sutherland is going to be muttering ‘goddamnit’ all over TVs in 2020 in a small-screen version of the 90s drama.

The 24 star will be taking on the role of Tommy Lee Jones’ U.S. Marshal on the tail of Mike Ferro (played by Boyd Holbrook) who finds himself at the centre of a manhunt when he is incorrectly identified as the man who detonated a bomb on the LA subway.

‘The faulty evidence on the ground and “tweet-now, confirm-later” journalism paint a nightmarish picture: it looks to all the world that Mike was responsible for the heinous act,’ Variety reports about the TV series.

‘Wrongfully—and very publicly—accused, Mike must prove his innocence by uncovering the real perpetrator, before the legendary cop (Sutherland) heading the investigation can apprehend him.’

Ford originally played the central character, played on the small screen by Holbrook.

The series will air on Quibi which is a new streaming service for mobiles.

Slated to launch in April 2020, the service also announced Monday that Game Of Thrones’ Sophie Turner would star in one of their new shows opposite Corey Hawkins.

It will be her first show since the Emmy-winning series came to an end.

Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly claim that Piers Morgan keeps ‘wriggling out of’ doing I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!.

The hosts of the infamous reality show allege that Good Morning Britain presenter Piers would actually go Down Under if the paycheck was appealed to him, however, they say he keeps on making excuses.

‘Piers has said he would do it for a certain amount of money, which I think we could meet, but he keeps on wriggling out of it,’ Dec revealed at the Royal Television Society conference in Cambridge.

‘We have a list that we get every year and we add to it and subtract from it,’ Ant added.

‘On our list at the moment, one person we are tracking down this year is Richard Madeley.

Ant and Dec

He continued: ‘Tim Westwood. I would like to see that. Alan Shearer, the list is endless.’

Imagine how good that would be!

Our annual dose of I’m A Celeb action is on the horizon and speculation about who will be jetting Down Under is in full swing.

Love Island star Maura Higgins is being heavily tipped for the upcoming series – and refused to confirm or deny her appearance to Metro.co.uk at the TV Choice Awards earlier this month.

Meanwhile, Coronation Street actor Alan Halsall dropped a major clue that he might have signed up for the show when he shared a picture of himself on a hike.

Joking with his 150,000 followers, the father-of-one wrote in the caption: ‘It’s a jungle out there.’

Of course, this snap absolutely snowballed and even his Corrie co-star Ryan Thomas couldn’t help but join in with the speculation, writing: ‘Can’t wait to see you on the jungle congratulations mate.’

I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! returns to ITV later this year.
