Marvel’s She-Hulk series accused of ‘pandering’ despite character being created by Stan Lee in 1980s

Not everyone’s happy with Marvel’s new TV series She-Hulk, with some fans assuming that the character is just a new female version of the Hulk and hasn’t been around in comic books since the 1980s.

Oh honey, no.

Along with Disney’s string of announcements ahead of the launch of Disney+, it was revealed that an original She-Hulk series will be coming to the small screen.

Despite many fans being hyped for the release, the comments on the announcements were flooded with people claiming it’s ‘pandering’, with Marvel fans doing their best to explain.

‘Unpopular opinion: female superheroes really ain’t it,’ one follower decided to say.

There’s definitely a good reason it’s an unpopular opinion TBH.

‘Did you just assume the hulk’s Gender?’ another asked.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B1hnRWGFpJo/

Meanwhile, Marvel die-hards came with receipts, with one explaining: ‘To anyone ready to complain: She-Hulk is an OFFICIAL character that has existed for a long time in the comics. :).’

‘To everyone saying they ‘assumed hulk’s gender’ she’s an official marvel character,’ another added, with one more simply despairing: ‘The amount of ignorance in these comments, man.’

Created by Stan Lee back in 1980, She-Hulk, also known as Jennifer Walters, is canonically Bruce Banner’s cousin and acquires a milder version of his Hulk condition by getting an emergency blood transfusion from him.

She ends up being able to hold onto her personality while being in Hulk mode – much like the Avengers: Endgame version of the character.

Disney has been on a wild announcing spree over the past day, revealing that shows including Star Wars spin-off The Mandalorian, starring Ewan McGregor, the creatively named High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, and The World According to Jeff Goldblum will be released.

Meanwhile, the internet went into a bit of a meltdown when Hilary Duff announced she’d be reprising her role as Lizzie McGuire in a reboot that will see the character take on New York as a millennial.

This is truly what dreams are made of.

Chatting about the series, the 31-year-old explained: ‘I’m not gonna lie, I’m a little intimidated. I’m like, “Where is she in there?” She is in there; she is me.

‘When I was 13, it was such a big part of me…I just have to tap into that and be very authentic to that. Our lives are very different. She’s not a mother, I am already a mother.’

Paul Chuckle isn’t happy with CBBC (Picture: Rex)

Paul Chuckle has kicked off at CBBC over their ranking of their greatest shows after it placed ChuckleVision in the ‘mid tier’.

The channel’s official social media account divided some of their best shows between four categories, ranging from ‘legend tier’ to ‘hmmm tier’ depending on their perceived quality.

As you can imagine, it was totally wrong. While there was rightful inclusions like Horrible Histories and Get Your Own Back in legend status, there was a number of bizarre omissions like Blue Peter and Live And Kicking which caused online fury.

One person who wasn’t happy was Paul Chuckle, who was particularly irked after ChuckleVision was placed in the third tier down alongside, er, Bamzooki.

The ranking has caused quite the fuss (Picture: Twitter)

Responding to the ‘Did we get it right?” tweet with the post, Paul wrote: ‘No actually you didn’t in my opinion @cbbc get it right #Chucklevision 294 episodes over 21 years #GetVoting.’

What started out as innocent social media frolics soon turned nasty, however, when Paul brought up the issue of the show’s cancellation in response to a fan.

‘They dumped us without comment or even letting us know ten years ago so I wasn’t surprised to be honest that @cbbc would do this,’ Paul wrote.

ChuckleVision began in 1987 before it was cancelled in 2009 after 21 series.

The queens from RuPaul’s Drag Race UK descended upon Manchester Pride for their first public outing together.

The first ever UK edition of the reality series is set to kick off on 3 October, which sees ten queens competing for the title of the UK’s Drag Race Superstar.

After the line-up was revealed earlier this week, the ten contestants were flying the Drag Race flag for Manchester Pride on Saturday (24 August).

The queens took to the Manchester streets on the back of a RuPaul’s Drag Race float, followed by a pair of blow-up legs so they can properly sissy that walk.

Names on the bill include Baga Chipz, Blu Hydrangea, Crystal, Cheryl Hole, Divina De Camp, Gothy Kendoll, Sum Ting Wong, Scaredy Kat, The Vivienne, and Vinegar Strokes.

Speaking about the series, RuPaul said: ‘Each of the UK queens is so unique, so courageous and so special. I can’t wait for the UK – and the world – to fall in love with them the same way I did.’

RuPaul will be joined by Michelle Visage, Alan Carr, and Graham Norton on judging duties, while celebrity guest judges include Andrew Garfield, Maisie Williams, Twiggy, and Cheryl.

If you’re unfamiliar, RuPaul’s Drag Race has spanned eleven seasons in the US, picking up numerous awards including the Emmy for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program in 2008.

The show has made stars of many contestants too, including comedian Bianca Del Rio and Shangela who recently appeared in A Star Is Born.

RuPaul’s Drag Race UK starts 3 October on BBC Three, with episodes releasing Thursdays on BBC iPlayer.

Strictly Come Dancing’s Katya Jones is rumoured to be paired up with Paralympian Will Bayley for the next series, according to new reports.

The series, which will begin this autumn, has yet to officially reveal which celebrities will be paired up, but sources report Katya and the Paralympics table tennis gold medallist will be dancing together.

A source told The Mirror: ‘Katya and Will have been put together, they are in early group rehearsals and bosses will be looking out for which couples gel. Quite often the pairings do stick.’

The dancers and celebrities meet weeks before the show launches, in order to take part in rehearsals so the producers can work out which couples should be paired up.

Strictly’s reps declined to comment on the rumours, saying partnerships would be revealed on 7 September.

The rumours come days after Katya, 30, and her husband Neil Jones, 37, announced they had split up, less than a year after she was photographed kissing her former Strictly partner Seann Walsh.

The couple said in a statement: ‘After 11 years, we have made the mutual decision to separate. We will always love each other, just in a different way as friends.

‘This will never change what a great team we make and we are really proud of everything we have achieved together.

‘Our shared love of dance means we will keep working and dancing together as well as exploring individual projects. No matter what we do we will always support and respect each other.’

Will, who has arthrogryphosis – a condition which affects development of the limbs – is in a three-year relationship with actress Fiona York and the couple have a child together.

Metro.co.uk have reached out to Strictly reps for comment.

Maura Higgins and Curtis Pritchard ‘knew each other years before Love Island’ amid fake claims

Maura Higgins and Curtis Pritchard have been getting closer ever since they met on Love Island, earlier this summer.

But it has been claimed the couple – who finished the series in fourth place – actually knew each other before coming face-to-face in the villa.

In fact, Dancing With The Stars judge Brian Redmond claimed the ring girl ‘cast eyes’ at the 23-year-old backstage on the dance show.

‘Maura knows the show because she has been a brand ambassador for Bellamianta, who are the tanning company for Dancing With The Stars,’ he said.

‘I believe Maura had been out a few times to watch the show and apparently she and Curtis had cast eyes at each other across a busy dance floor years ago.’

The professional dancer was honest about his connection to the 28-year-old on the show, admitting he had slid right into her Instagram DMs before they stumbled into the ITV2 dating show together.

Brian also revealed he would be keen to get Maura on the show, following her Love Island success.

‘She knows the show and being with Curtis she obviously knows what it involves. It would be great to have her on but probably not this year,’ he continued to the Irish Mirror.

‘But I’m sure she will be supporting him in the new series so we will wait and see what happens.’

However, she might be a little busy as ITV bosses are reportedly hoping to get her on an activities-based show soon.

And we need this to happen.

An insider told The Sun she has ‘ratings-winner potential’, and are hoping to get her signed up ASAP.

‘She is great on screen so bosses want to create a platform where viewers can still get their fix,’ they claimed.

The source added that producers don’t know how long Maura and Curtis will stay together, so they’re unwilling to give the couple a spin-off show together.

‘While her and Curtis are still together, no-one really knows what the future holds for them as a couple so producers are focusing on Maura,’ they alleged.

‘They are ironing out details at the moment. She has ratings-winner potential, they just have to settle on the right tone.’

It sounds like our next binge watch.

Metro.co.uk has contacted reps for Maura and Curtis for a comment.

Inside the real Peaky Blinders: The true story behind Tommy Shelby and his gang ahead of season 5

Inside the real Peaky Blinders: The true story behind Tommy Shelby and his gang
Who were the real Peaky Blinders? (Pictures: SWNS /BBC)

The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, Underbelly, Gomorrah… There are plenty of spectacular TV dramas from across the world that concern themselves with the fascinating and violent world of gangsters. But until recent years, Britain didn’t have a horse in the race (or even a horse’s head in the bed). That all changed back in 2013 though, when BBC Two first aired Steven Knight’s incredible crime drama Peaky Blinders. It would go on to be a huge runaway success.

Charting the rise of a familial gang in Post-World War One Birmingham, Peaky Blinders stars Irish actor Cillian Murphy as Thomas Shelby, leader of the eponymous mob. Violent, stylish and packed full of as many stand-out performances as there are bullets fired (and there are plenty of those), fans of one of UK television’s best crime dramas are currently gearing up for the return of the series. Its upcoming fifth run is just about visible on the horizon.

Now, you may or may not know that the Peaky Blinders are inspired by a real-life street gang of that same very name. As series five looms, let’s take a moment to see just how much the screen version reflects reality as we look into the real-life story of the Peaky Blinders gang…

A little historical context

While The Industrial Revolution brought jobs and, of course, industry to many British cities, it also brought with it quite extreme poverty. The late 19th century saw large parts of cities like Birmingham hit slum standards. Things were bleak. The place became overcrowded and crime became rife. Gangs of street kids cobbled together and began thieving, mugging and racketeering. And, as is so often the case when it comes to gangs, there was soon all-out war on the streets between them all.

The Peaky Blinders were one of those gangs.

They were not, however, the first. In fact, the real-life gang were pretty late to the party…

Rival gangs

The dominant force in the Cheapside, Small Heath and Bordesley areas of Birmingham at the beginning of this crime wave were an outfit known as ‘The Sloggers’ (or ‘The Cheapside Slogging Gang’). Their name coming from the ‘sloggings’ they would dish out to victims with their heavily-buckled belts. The Sloggers established themselves on the streets of Brum a good few years become the Peaky Blinders began making a mark.

Later, as the Peaky Blinders started to grow in status, they came up against larger gangs such as the much bigger and much tougher Birmingham Boys and ‘The King of the Racecourse Gangs’, Charles ‘Derby’ Sabini and his mob. As seen in series one and two of the BBC series. The only difference is – in reality – the Peaky Blinders never stood a chance against either and were quickly pushed out.

A slight age discrepancy

While their screen versions are feared, handsome and swaggering men unafraid to come up against rivals, police and even the likes of the Mafia, the reality was a little different.

Sure, the Blinders were tough. But they were more tough kids than tough guys. Members could be as young as 12 and were often known for their rather unglamourous and unscary window-smashing about the city.

Where did the Peaky Blinders get their name?

There’s a rather famous story behind how the Blinders’ were christened with their quite odd name. One that, like a lot of other rather famous stories from down the years, isn’t thought to be grounded in very much truth.

The legend has it that the gang’s handle originates from their propensity to stitch razor blades into their fabric caps and use them as handy makeshift weapons during fights. Which is an endearing, if rather grisly, image. It’s likely just a fabricated one, though.

Cillian Murphy gave Peaky Blinders superfan David Bowie his cap A Still of Cillian Murphy in Peaky Blinders
The razor blades in their peaky blinders is a myth (Picture: BBC)

Professor of History and all-round expert on the Midlands Carl Chinn explains: ‘Razor blades? They were only beginning to come in from the 1890s and were a luxury item, much too expensive for the Peaky Blinders to have used. And any hard man would tell you it would be very difficult to get direction and power with a razor blade sewn into the soft part of a cap. I can understand why the series producers used the name because it’s infused with gangsterdom.’

It’s more likely – but much less romantic – that the name simply came from the peaked style of hat that the gang favoured (although the ‘Blinder’ part remains unaccounted for).

The name stuck, though. The term ‘Peaky Blinders’ lived on longer than the street gang that established the moniker. The original Blinders’ influence waned as the early Twentieth century ticked past. ‘Peaky Blinders’ was still a much-used phrase, however. Although it became more of a catch-all phrase used to refer to any gang of streets hoodlums from the area.

Are the characters based on real people?

The answer to that question is ‘well, sort of…’ Or, to be just as infuriatingly vague – ‘yes and no’. Many of the peripheral characters existed. And, as we’re finding out, the gang themselves were a real-life entity. But the Shelbys themselves? Well, we’re afraid they’re just figments of writer Steven Knight’s imagination.

Rival figures like Billy Kimber and ‘Derby’ Sabini existed. As did, of course, the likes of Sir Winston Churchill. History buffs should keep a look-out for Sam Claflin in series five as he appears as the unfortunately-also-real fascist Oswald Mosley.

Their stylish sartorial side

Unlike most of their enemies, the Peaky Blinders took their appearance seriously. While most street gangs of the time just wore standard clothes for the time, the Blinders stood out for their flair for fashion.

They would wear their famed large peaked hats tilted to the side. Their jackets would be adorned with fancy brass buttons, they would always wear a clean shirt tucked into flared bell-bottom trousers, worn over chunky steel toe cap boots. For an extra flourish, they would tie a silk scarf around their necks.

Peaky Blinders' Sophie Rundle still doesn't know what's happening with Bodyguard 2
The Peaky Blinders style was essential (Picture: BBC)

The wives and girlfriends of Blinders members also had a distinct look. They too would sport the silk neckerchief, but above large pearl necklaces. They’d also wear their hair with a heavy, long fringe. A fringe the lads, understandably, avoided.

The decline of the Peaky Blinders

As we’ve mentioned, the gang’s power diminished somewhat when they came up against bigger, stronger mobs. Their decline was imminent, anyway. All those street gangs were squeezed out when cities like Birmingham began to grow and families moved out to newly-formed suburbs. Police also cracked down in a big way and all but entirely stamped out institutionalised corruption.

Crime and the gangs committing crime didn’t disappear entirely, of course. It all merely evolved and changed over the years. After the Second World War, these Peaky Blinder-style street gangs grew up. Their crimes became more organised and they retreated into the shadows, becoming less visible.

So where the likes of Gomorrah or Boardwalk Empire give a realistic, detailed and historically very accurate insight into the lives and crimes of real-life gangsters, Peaky Blinders uses a wee bit of creative license. Not that any of us dedicated Blinders lovers care all that much, eh?

Peaky Blinders series 5 launches tonight at 9pm on BBC One.

Paul Hollywood’s ex-girlfriend Summer Monteys-Fullam is reportedly applying pressure to I’m A Celebrity! Get me out of here… bosses over her appearance fee.

The 24-year-old is said to be after one of the biggest appearance fees in the show’s history after being labelled a ‘hot ticket for reality shows’ after her nasty split with the Great British Bake Off judge.

According to The Mirror, Summer has already turned down a £125,000 offer for the jungle-based reality series, with her friends saying the sum is ‘way off the mark’.

Fair play to her.

A source told the paper: ‘Summer knows she’d be TV gold and can all but name her price.

‘If she gets her way, she’ll be one of the highest-paid contestants ever.’

Summer Monteys-Fullam
Will Summer be heading Down Under? (Picture: Instagram)

The former bartender initially sparked I’m  A Celeb speculation when she liked a number of Instagram comments about her taking part in the series.

One comment she liked reads: ‘Hope rumours are true and this beautiful lady is on I’m a celebrity this year. You’ve got my support and vote.’

A source previously told The Mail on Sunday: ‘Obviously I’m A Celebrity would be her top prize.

‘The six-figure sum and the exposure is the biggest you’d get anywhere but she also wants to work on her own ideas.

She’s a bright girl and she has some thoughts on her own shows – it’s very much a case of watch this space.’

On last year’s series, Deal or No Deal presenter Noel Edmonds landed the show’s biggest pay day with £6000,000 and last year’s winner Harry Redknapp is estimated to have baked £500,000.

Summer and Paul had been dating for two years when they went their separate ways after a spat over signing a non-disclosure agreement.

The pair have both taken to social media in the wake of the break up, with Summer claiming she is taking Paul to court for making defamatory claims about her.

I’m A celeb returns later this year to ITV.

When is Breaking Bad movie El Camino released, who is in the cast and is Walter White in it?

Breaking Bad’s movie El Camino just moved a step closer (Picture: AMC)

Excitement is high among Breaking Bad fans, following the release of the first teaser trailer for movie spin-off El Camino.

The project’s been shrouded in secrecy for some time now but the clip comes just hours after fans discovered that there was a ‘landing page’ for the film on Netflix, confirming that the film is indeed on its way to us.

We still don’t know a whole lot though given that the whole thing’s been kept a closely guarded secret – although the trailer does suggest that at least one character, Skinny Pete (Charles Baker) will be back.

Here’s what we know about El Camino.

When is Breaking Bad movie El Camino released?

El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (to give it its full title) will be released on Netflix sooner than you think, arriving on 11 October.

The date was confirmed by Netflix at the end of the teaser trailer, which was released at the weekend.

What is going to happen in El Camino: A Breaking Bad movie?

Reports have suggested the film will focus on Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul) and his quest for freedom following his panicked escape from the deadly settlement headed by Jack Welker (Michael Bowen) in the closing scenes.

And the trailer has hinted that may be the case, as it features with Skinny Pete having been brought in for questioning, and referring in that time to the whereabouts of Jesse (Aaron Paul) – and his refusal to give away where he  might be.

He tells the authorities he has no idea where he is before telling them: ‘I don’t know what to tell you…no way I’m helping you people put Jesse Pinkman back inside a cage.’

The cast of the series aren’t giving much away, however.

Some familiar faces will be heading back to El Camino (Picture: Netflix)

Actor Bob Odenkirk, who plays lawyer Saul Goodman both in Breaking Bad and spin-off Better Call Saul, revealed earlier this month that the film had already wrapped, expressing surprise that nobody seemed to know about it.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about the movie, Odenkirk said: ‘I don’t know what people know and don’t know.

‘I find it hard to believe you don’t know it was shot. They did it. You know what I mean? How is that a secret? But it is. They’ve done an amazing job of keeping it a secret.’

Who is in the cast of El Camino and is Walter White coming back?

A scene from Breaking Bad with Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul
Will we be seeing Walter and Jesse again? (Picture: AMC)

Once again details have been kept quiet, although Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston have both hinted they are returning in some capacity (could that mean seeing Walter White once again?)

Anna Gunn recently hinted that she could also be involved, although it’s unclear whether Odenkirk is bringing Saul Goodman back for the movie.

One person you won’t be seeing, however, is RJ Mitte as Walt Jr, after the actor ruled himself out of appearing earlier this year.

Vince Gilligan – creator of the original series – is on board as director.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is almost back for its 14th season and the gang are getting ready to fight in their best wrestler regalia in their new promo shots.

Dressed as wrestlers, Mac, Charlie, Dee, Denis and Frank all embody a different persona but something tells us they’re not quite as endearing as the characters from GLOW.

They’re probably all heels tbh.

The pic was shared to the show’s official Twitter account with the caption: ‘14th season. Still fighting dirty.

‘Sunny’s jumping off the top rope 9/25 on FXX.’

And fans will probably recognise Frank’s (Danny DeVito) get up from the iconic Trashman episode.

‘I come out and throw trash all over the ring!’

Lots to look forward to then.

Rob McElhenny aka Mac recently shared a sneak preview of the upcoming season with the gang on top form making a show of themselves in a fancy restaurant.

He also hinted that Charlie (Charlie Day) and Frank are on the hunt for a temporary new roommate.

‘Here’s something from the new season of our very strange TV show,’ the 42-year-old captioned the Instagram pic, which showed an, er, interesting flyer for a one-bedroom apartment.

‘Gruesome twosome seek exotic Europeans for week-long rental in luxurious one-room apartment,’ it read.

Bed to be shared with owners, s***ter down the hall. Email F. Reynolds at Warthog-orgyfart.edu.’

Another BTS preview shows Rob crying laughing watching co-star Glenn Howerton on set.

As well as Murphy returning you can also expect to see cast regulars Paul Anderson, Finn Cole and Aiden Gillen returning.

The new series also has several additions to the cast, including Brian Gleeson, Emmett J Scanlan and Anya Taylor-Joy who is joining the series as Michael (Cole)’s wife Gina – who is set to seriously shake things up for the Shelbys.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, writer Steven Knight summed up Gina by saying she’s bringing ‘intrigue’ onto the show, and she’s about to seriously rock the boat for the tight-knit gangster family.

He explained: ‘There’s a lot going on – but yeah, a lot of intrigue and a sort of new loyalty, where within the family, there’s another family.’

Meanwhile another cast newcomer is Sam Claflin, who is playing Oswald Mosley, leader of the British Union of Fascists.

When is Peaky Blinders season 5 set?

The new series is set in 1929, kicking off with the Wall Street Crash and the beginning of the Great Depression.

‘Tommy’s a politician so he bumps against some of the dark forces that were around politically at the time,’ Knight revealed.

‘Europe is changing, things are happening, and we wanted to put Tommy at the heart of that which was just beginning at the start of the 30s.’

BBC has commissioned a new series based on the stage play My Left Nut.

The coming of age comedy-drama was written by Irish newcomers Michael Patrick and Oisín Kearney and it’s about ‘friendship, family, grief and testicles’.

The synopsis reads: ‘The series follows school-boy Mick (Nathan Quinn-O’Rawe) and his journey after discovering a swelling on his testicle. He can’t tell his dad; he died seven years ago.

‘He can’t tell his mum Patricia (Sinéad Keenan); she’s got a million other things on her plate.

‘He can’t tell his schoolmates; there’s an upside to rumours about the bulge in your trousers…

‘And it’s not like it’s going to complicate things between Mick and his first girlfriend anyway, right?’

Writers, Michael Patrick and Oisín Kearney, said: ‘It’s a real honour to be able to share this personal story, which celebrates Michael’s family and friends, while raising issues around men’s health and the difficulty young people have in talking about their problems.

‘At the same time we have had such a laugh writing it and we hope people enjoy this Belfast story in all its humour and humanity.’

Leading the cast as Mick is newcomer Nathan Quinn-O’Rawe and his mother will be played by Sinéad Keenan of Little Boy Blue fame.

Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, said: ‘Michael and Oisín have huge flair for storytelling and I wanted to give them their first television commission to make their unique voices heard.

‘Their take on this very important and personal story will engage the BBC Three audience in a unique and heartfelt way.’

My Left Nut will be set and filmed in Belfast.

My Left Nut is in production for BBC Three.

We can’t believe summer is almost over but we’re somewhat consoled by all the great telly that’s about to kick off.

As summer comes to an end, the BBC is ready to kick off autumn nights with a ‘raft of enthralling, exhilarating and must-see dramas coming this autumn/winter’.

The highly-anticipated fifth season of Peaky Blinders kicks off tonight but the broadcaster has teased a number of other exciting shows which are due to start in the coming months.

In the new promo, which can be watched above, new footage and sneak peeks of the likes of His Dark Materials and Dublin Murders can be seen.

His Dark Materials, based on Philip Pullman’s epic fantasy trilogy of novels, begins with the story of Lyra and her daemon Pantalaimon, who live a happy existence in Oxford until the glamorous Mrs Coulter shows up.

Dublin Murders is drawn from Tana French’s internationally bestselling Dublin Murder Squad novels.

World on Fire follows the first year of World War II told through the intertwining fates of ordinary people drawn from across Europe and the United States as they grapple with the effect of the war on their everyday lives.

Noughts + Crosses is a gripping story of first love in a dangerous, other world where racism divides society while The Trial of Christine Keeler takes a fresh look at one of the most infamous British stories – the chain of events in the 1960s that came to be known as the Profumo Affair.

New thriller The Capture looks at a troubling world of fake news and the extraordinary capabilities of the intelligence services, whilst domestic noir drama Gold Digger, tells the story of a wealthy 60-year old falling in love with a much younger man, and the effect it has on her already damaged family.

Ahead of the festive season, A Christmas Carol is a unique and original take on the Charles Dickens’ iconic ghost story and a haunting, hallucinatory, spine-tingling immersion into Scrooge’s dark night of the soul.

And over on BBC Two, ambitious eight-part global drama Giri/Haji is an intricate and soulful thriller that explores the butterfly effect of one murder over two cities, London and Tokyo.

BBC’s upcoming series for autumn 2019:

  • Peaky Blinders
  • World on Fire
  • His Dark Materials
  • Noughts + Crosses
  • Dublin Murders
  • The Trial of Christine Keeler

Love Island’s Amber Gill and Amy Hart reunite and squash feud rumours at girly sleepover

Love Island 2019 has raised the profiles of its young stars with two prominent characters, winner Amber Gill and Amy Hart both vying for top daytime TV jobs.

Since leaving the villa, both women have landed guest roles on ITV’s Loose Women, with rumours of a rift and fierce competition between the pair.

However, both Amber and Amy seem to be ignoring the perceived drama as they hung out last night along with fellow islanders Yewnade Biala, Anna Vakili, Francesca Allen and Belle Hassan.

The girl gang appeared to be on top form at a sleepover party hosted by Anna and her sister Mandi with Amber and Amy hanging out as if they were back in the villa.

Earlier this week on Capital FM, Amber admitted she only really sees bets pals Anna and Yewande since the show ended but squashed any notion of a feud with the former air hostess.

When asked if she stayed in contact with all the islanders Amber said: ‘Not all of them. But, a lot of the girls I was really close to I try to see them as often as I can.’

https://www.instagram.com/p/B1lU4U_lJtA/

She added: ‘Yeah we’ve got a big WhatsApp group, but me, Anna and Yewande the most so hopefully I’ll be seeing them this weekend.’ [sic]

Elsewhere in the interview, Amber announced she won’t be speaking to ex Michael Griffiths ever again.

When asked if she will be speaking to him or if she’s been tempted to get in contact with the firefighter, Amber flat out answered: ‘No,’ every time.

She also spoke about the pressure to move in with her almost-boyfriend Greg O’Shea.

‘Yeah, things are going really well but he’s got to be over in Dublin for his rugby and I’m kinda over here in London, so at the minute we can’t really decide what we’re going to do,’ she said.

‘Yeah, a month and a week or something that I’ve known him! And it’s like “woah, woah, woah” everyone wants us to move in with him, marry him, all sorts.

‘It is going really well but it’s just hard because we’re both doing things that we love but just in separate countries. ‘

Love Island will return to ITV2 in early 2020.

What time is Sanditon on ITV tonight and who is in the cast of the Jane Austen adaptation?

Sanditon brings Jane Austen’s final unfinished novel to the screen (Picture: ITV)

ITV is set to unleash its latest big period drama over the weekend, in the shape of the Jane Austen adaptation Sanditon.

The romantic drama is based on the author’s last ever novel – which was unfinished at the time of the author’s death after she abandoned it in her final months due to ill-health.

However it’s been dusted down and is now getting an outing courtesy of Andrew Davies – the writer who famously sent Colin Firth into that lake in his 90s adaptation of Pride and Prejudi.

Expect plenty of drama and romance in a story which spans from London to the West Indies – but what time should you tune in on ITV?

Here’s what you need to know.

What time is Sanditon on ITV tonight?

Sanditon kicks off on ITV on Sunday night at 9pm.

The episode runs for an hour ahead of the ITV News at 10pm.

There are eight episodes in the series, with the remainder airing for the next seven weeks on Sunday night at the same time.

What is Sanditon about?

Rose Williams as Charlotte Heywood in Sanditon
Rose Williams takes the lead as feisty Charlotte (Picture: ITV)

The series is based upon the unfinished novel, which was not published until 1925 – over 100 years after Austen’s death.

It tells the story of Charlotte Heywood, an unconventional woman, and her relationship with love interest Sidney Parker, after she moves to the titular fishing village – which is striving to become a seaside resort.

The synopsis tells us: ‘When a chance accident transports her from her rural hometown of Willingden to the would-be coastal resort of the eponymous title, it exposes Charlotte to the intrigues and dalliances of a seaside town on the make, and the characters whose fortunes depend on its commercial success.

‘The twists and turns of the plot, which takes viewers from the West Indies to the rotting alleys of London, exposes the hidden agendas of each character and sees Charlotte discover herself and ultimately find love.’ It continues: ‘Excited by the promise of adventure that Sanditon offers, Charlotte is a young woman of enormous energy who builds a reputation as an integral part of the new town.

‘Open and optimistic in spirit, she’s excited by the changes the nineteenth century promises and she’s ready for a new life; she’s a truly modern Austen heroine.’

Who is in the cast of Sanditon?

Rose Williams and Crystal Clarke in a still from Sanditon
Crystal Clarke plays Jane Austen’s first ever black character Miss Lambe (Picture: ITV)

The cast is led by Rose Williams (Mary Queen Of Scots, A Quiet Place, Curfew) as Charlotte, while Theo James (The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance) plays Sidney Parker.

Co-stars include Kris Marshall as businessman Tom Parker – who bares all, quite literally, in the first instalment – while Anne Reid appears as Lady Denham.

The cast also features Crystal Clarke as Miss Lambe – Jane Austen’s first ever black character – as well as Kate Ashfield, Leo Suter and Charlotte Spencer.

Kat Dennings, Randall Park and Kathryn Hahn have joined the cast of the upcoming Disney+ series WandaVision.

Marvel boss Kevin Feige announced the project during Disney’s mega showcase this weekend ahead of the new streaming service launching later this year.

WandaVision won’t be hitting screens until 2021 but will see Dennings and Park reprise their MCU roles from the Thor movies and Ant Man movies.

Park will star as FBI agent Jimmy Woo while Dennings returns as Darcy Lewis, the sidekick of Natalie Portman’s character in the first two Thor movies.

Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany will be leading the charge as Wanda and Vision respectively.

Feige described the series as being heavily inspired by The Dick Van Dyke Show and that it will be connected to Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.

Bettany told the Walt Disney Company in a video interview: ‘It happens to be a mash-up between a couple of our favourite comics that will remain nameless.

‘But also a mash-up – and this is all from Kevin Feige’s fevered imagination – a mash-up of American sitcoms throughout the eras.

‘And it tumbles into a kind of chaotic, messed up story, that then ends up in a more familiar Marvel narrative.

‘When you have someone pitch that to you, and you have six hours to play around in, I’m excited.’

What is this show!?

WandaVision is currently in production for Marvel.

Peaky Blinders’ Harry Kirton still working part-time in a vegan cafe ahead of season 5 return

Harry is continuing to work despite his success in Peaky Blinders (Picture: BBC/Getty)

Peaky Blinders season five is just about to launch worldwide but Harry Kirton, who plays youngest brother Finn Shelby on the series, is still working part-time in a café.

The actor, who has been on the show since the age of 13, has revealed that in order not to have success go to his head, you can still catch him serving coffee in London’s Shoreditch in a bid to keep himself grounded.

Have to say, he’s a million miles away from the troublesome Birmingham family where he’s made his name, to say the least.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Harry said: ‘I still do part-time work, you know, I like to keep in sync with the world that we live in because acting is a very…you know, you’re pretending a lot and your headspace is in this area and that.

‘At the end of the day we’ve all got to pay rent and we’ve all got to do real things.

‘I have a lot of passions that aren’t just acting. I like to write, I’m vegan, I’m working at a vegan cafe because I love what they’re doing. I want to eat good food, and I want to talk to people.’

Finn Shelby is coming into his own after years of being ignored by his brothers (Picture: BBC)

‘The best source for an actor is just humans, just people going about their day and the best source of information is somewhere like that,’ he continued. ‘When people come in and out it makes me learn even more than sitting at home going “oh, what do I do for the day?!”.

‘Get off your a**e, make some money, be productive, sort of thing.’

The star added that his working-class background is partly to thank for this because his parents want to make sure that he doesn’t run away with the idea of being in the spotlight too much.

‘My dad always keeps me in check. I don’t live with him and we have a great relationship, but they always keep me in check,’ he laughed.

Now 21, the actor has been thrown into the spotlight as a member of one of TV’s most loved – and most feared – families, with Finn Shelby growing on-screen from someone too young to be involved in the problems of his brothers, to a leader of his own pack of Blinders in the season five opening.

Surprisingly though, thanks to the show’s ever-distinctive haircut, and the actor’s more natural flat hair, he admits he’s not recognised so much. But when he is, it’s often at the worst possible time.

‘I’m living in Shoreditch at the moment, and I’m recognised most in Shoreditch. A lot, for me anyway. Which is always lovely and always random, but sometimes they catch you in, like, I’ll be going down to the shop and my hair will be everywhere, but it’s very humbling. I don’t mind it,’ he said.

‘The other day I was topless in some shorts, sweating through my knees!’

Peaky Blinders airs Sundays at 9pm on BBC One.

The Audition Room: How Helen McCrory, Finn Cole, Sophie Rundle and co became Peaky Blinders

Landing yourself your dream role is a lot harder than most make it appear, but if you can nail that one game-changing audition, like say the worldwide smash hit Peaky Blinders, then the world is your oyster.

So, to help you budding young stars out, we’re scoping out info from those on the inside of the industry with Metro.co.uk’s Audition Room – and this time, we’ve rounded up the Peaky Blinders cast to see what it truly takes to become a member of the Shelby clan.

From attempts to stand out going disastrously wrong, to almost skipping the audition completely, it’s clear that the gang left an impression, and that’s all you really need to be given the shot that gets your foot in the door.

To celebrate the launch of season five, Helen McCrory, Sophie Rundle, Harry Kirton, Finn Cole and Natasha O’Keefe tell us about their auditions…

Helen McCrory - Polly Peaky Blinders
Helen was offered the role while performing on the West End (Picture: Rex)

Helen McCrory – Aunt Polly Gray

‘They sent it to me, and I read it, then [director] Otto [Bathurst] explained it to me… I can’t remember what I was doing at the time…

‘The Last of the Haussmans! I was doing a play that was written for Julie Walters, Rory Kinnear and myself by a man called Stephen Beresford over at the National.

We were phoning up saying “she can do it as long as you can film on these dates” and they went “yeah, alright!”

‘So the first season we were phoning up saying “she can do it as long as you can film on these dates” and they went “yeah, alright”, so I went “yeah, alright then!”

‘I’m very lucky.’

Sophie Rundle - Ava Thorne
Sophie suffered a hair dye disaster while trying to attempt to impress the casting directors (Picture: BBC)

Sophie Rundle – Ava Thorne/Shelby

‘I remember mine really vividly, because I was straight out of drama school and I did a tape and they called me back in, and I was so shocked and so poor I was like “ok, this is kind of rock and roll, cool” so I dyed my hair and I thought it would be really cool if it was a bit darker. But I did it out of the box and it was [jet black], I was like “I can’t afford to fix it. I don’t know what to do!” and my audition was the next day.

‘So I went in with this sort of lace top, this jet black hair and really trying to pull it off. I don’t think I did. You know when you do it out of the box and you get that line [across the forehead]. It looked like a Halloween wig and I was a vampire! Just trying to style it out. It must’ve worked in a way because I was like “well, I’ll never get it, because I’m just this fat child that’s just come out of drama school” – but then I got it!

I went in with this sort of lace top, this jet black hair and really trying to pull it off. I don’t think I did.

‘I have consistently since been like “I don’t know what I’m doing here”. But yeah, it was really jammy. But that’s what I remember, having terrible hair.

‘I knew what it was and I think they sent us the first episode, but because it was one of my first jobs, I was sort’ve like, I remember they showed it, in the studio this huge massive clip of like “this is what we’ve shot so far” and everyone was like “this is so f***ing cool”, and I remember being like “it must be like this all the time! Every show! I can’t wait for this to be a consistent thing.

We sort of had an idea [what the show would be]. It very quickly had its own identity. ‘

Natasha O'Keefe - Lizzie
Natasha’s brazen attitude in the audition worked wonders for her (Picture: Rex/BBC)

Natasha O’Keefe – Lizzie Stark/Shelby

‘I remember I went in and Shaheen [Baig] was there, the casting director, and I had such a small little bit, and not knowing if there was a future with Lizzie or anything like that.

‘I remember putting my foot on the table at one point, and like doing my lace up, and it made no sense. I think I was feeling pretty confident that day. I just remember doing that in front of Shaheen and then coming out and thinking “well that’s not going to go anywhere”.

I remember putting my foot on the table at one point, and like doing my lace up, and it made no sense

‘But actually yeah, I made it work then.’

‘They must’ve thought we were these really cool rock and roll chicks,’ Sophie Rundle added. ‘When in fact we’re just massive dorks.’

Finn Cole - Michael Gray - Peaky Blinders
Finn’s brother Joe text an audition video in on his behalf  (Picture: BBC/Getty)

Finn Cole – Michael Gray

‘So when series two came about, this was 2013 I think, when I first auditioned for it. I was at school, at Esher college. I really had no idea what I wanted to do, and obviously Joe [Cole, brother] was doing this [as John Shelby].

‘Joe came to me one afternoon and said “there’s an amazing character in the new series, why don’t you audition for it?” I told him “the reason I don’t audition for it is because I’m not an actor!” but he said “why don’t I just video it on my phone and I’ll send it off to my agent”, which he did, and the agent said “I think it’s great I might as well send it on to the casting director”. The casting director loved it and said they wanted to meet me. So I met with them and it kind of evolved like that.

‘I don’t even remember [what I wanted to be before], and actually I draw quite a lot of parallels with me and Michael in this regard. When Michael came into this family you got a real sense of who he wants to be and where he feels he belongs. As I came into this industry and met these incredible creatives who were really about entertaining and trying to make this as exciting as possible, that kind of got me really excited.

My approach to my career has really been built off of people like Cillian [Murphy] and Helen [McCrory], to follow in their footsteps

‘The freedom to do that on this show was just so special, that as soon as I stepped on set… I was really nervous to start but as soon as I stepped on set, I just had this wave fall off of me and I’ve continued to embrace that as much as possible going forward. With all my auditions, and all of my characters, I’m reminded of my first day on this show, and how welcomed I was and there was no judgement and no feeling of feeling like an amateur which I most definitely was!

‘It allowed me to give me my most confident performance, and that’s where that naturalism comes from. It’s from us being able to do and explore as much as possible. If 99% of those decisions are wrong, that’s absolutely fine, because that 1% is going to be right, and that’s what makes the show special.

‘That’s what makes it special for me, and my approach to my career has really been built off of people like Cillian [Murphy] and Helen [McCrory], to follow in their footsteps and wanting to take their advice at every possible stage.’

Harry Kirton - Peaky Blinders
Harry nearly slept through his audition but beat thousands to the part (Picture: BBC/Getty)

Harry Kirton – Finn Shelby

‘My first audition ever was to get Finn Shelby on Peaky Blinders. It was a Saturday morning and my dad woke me up and said “do you want to go to this?!” I’d only just started GCSEs when I auditioned for this, and I didn’t know what it was, or if I even wanted to commit to it, but I thought “hey, why not?! Let me see if I like it” and that’s been something that’s definitely stuck throughout my life really.

‘Saturday morning, I queued for five hours with my mum and dad, must’ve been about two, maybe three thousand people, it was just massive, and I thought “well i’m never… But it’ll be fun anyway”. Then you go in and there’s a line, you say a couple of things, you have a card, It was very basic and very to the point, then the next stage we actually got stuck into the script a little bit and sent a self-tape off. Thankfully I got to the next stage, and again.

There was almost nothing to lose and I think that’s something that I’ve got to remind myself

‘There were five stages I think, and by the end of it I’m in there with the casting director, in there with the director, the pressure’s on, the moment’s there, and there was almost nothing to lose and I think that’s something that I’ve got to remind myself with, being comfortable and assured that what you’re trying, if you regret it now, it’s not going to come through the way you’ve been practicing it and prepared for it. Trusting if I put my all into this very moment and then realising that it’s not what I wanted to achieve, there’s always a next time and another take and another moment.

‘Practicing and preparing has become a very real thing. Me learning etiquette and how to move in this industry, how to present myself, honesty is always been the best policy for me, and as I get older, as I said, there’s been more to learn. My muscles are constantly being challenged. So yeah, it’s cool. ‘

Peaky Blinders airs Sundays at 9pm on BBC One.

Peaky Blinders
Looking at them, a Kylie song would’ve felt out of place tbh. (Picture: BBC Pictures Archives)

Lyrics from the Peaky Blinders intro song fit so perfectly, you’d assume the song was written for the show.

But the song is actually nearly 30 years old – and is only meant to reference John Milton’s epic poem, Paradise Lost.

Here is everything that you need to know about the song that has been present throughout the first five seasons of Peaky Blinders.

What is the Peaky Blinders opening song?

Red Right Hand by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds is the song that sets the tone for an episode of Peaky Blinders.

With a pulsating intro and Cave’s deeply-dark baritone, the sinister tune will be echoing around houses across Britain this week with Peaky Blinders returning for its fifth season.

The ominous, creepy sounding tune seems almost tailor-made for the violent show, but it was originally released back in 1994.

Though Cave has never mentioned who or what the song is about explicitly, the ‘red right hand’ comes directly from a passage in Paradise Lost, a poem about the fall of man.

Who is Nick Cave?

Nick Cave is an accomplished Australian musician, writer and sometimes-actor.

He is well-known for his duet with fellow Aussie Kylie Minogue, when she took a walk on the dark side and released spooky murder-ballad ‘Where the Wild Roses Grow.’

He has released 15 studio albums with his band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

What are the Peaky Blinders intro song lyrics?

The lyrics to Red Right Hand by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

Take a little walk to the edge of town

And go across the tracks

Where the viaduct looms

Like a bird of doom

As it shifts and cracks

Where secrets lie in the border fires

In the humming wires

Hey man, you know

You’re never coming back

Past the square, past the bridge

Past the mills, past the stacks

On a gathering storm comes

A tall handsome man

In a dusty black coat with

A red right hand

He’ll wrap you in his arms

Tell you that you’ve been a good boy

He’ll rekindle all the dreams

It took you a lifetime to destroy

He’ll reach deep into the hole

Heal your shrinking soul

But there won’t be a single thing

That you can do

He’s a god, he’s a man

He’s a ghost, he’s a guru

They’re whispering his name

Through this disappearing land

But hidden in his coat

Is a red right hand

You don’t have no money?

He’ll get you some

You don’t have no car?

He’ll get you one

You don’t have no self-respect

You feel like an insect

Well don’t you worry buddy

’cause here he comes

Through the ghettos and the barrio

And the bowery and the slum

A shadow is cast wherever he stands

Stacks of green paper in his

Red right hand

You’ll see him in your nightmares

You’ll see him in your dreams

He’ll appear out of nowhere but

He ain’t what he seems

You’ll see him in your head

On the TV screen

And hey buddy, I’m warning

You to turn it off

He’s a ghost, he’s a god

He’s a man, he’s a guru

You’re one microscopic cog

In his catastrophic plan

Netflix’s GLOW ended on a low note in season 3 with the shock last minute departure of one of the show’s favourite characters, Carmen.

After becoming tired of the daily grind the Las Vegas wrestling show brought her, Carmen (Britney Young) ended the year with a Christmas Carol themed-show, before making a quiet exit when everyone said their goodbyes and when home for the holidays.

The sudden move left fans everywhere heartbroken, with the heart of the gang seriously taking a knock as a result of it.

But actress Rebekkah Johnson, who plays Beatdown Biddy Dawn Rivecca on the show, reckons this might not be the last we see of her.

Talking to Metro.co.uk, Rebekkah told us that even she’s holding hope for Carmen’s return to the ring sooner rather than later, and said: ‘I think for the actual television show, if we get season four, I think we’d get to see what Carmen does, where she’s going on the road.

‘She does [leave quickly] but I don’t think the actor is leaving…Carmen’s going to go wrestle with her brother, so I think we’ll get to see that.’

‘I’m not writing the show, obviously, but if I was, I definitely would make sure that we see that, and I think they will too,’ she added.

‘That’s what would be fun about season four, I could imagine seeing the circuit, and what it’s like for Carmen to actually wrestle on the road and the difference from wrestling on GLOW, this safe space where she gets to be the leader and then instead Carmen would be thrust in the middle of her professional wrestling circuit with all these people who might be treating her crappy.’

‘I think that would be fun, I think there’s a lot of drama to mine with that and then, in the meanwhile, I’m sure that then Bash and Debbie will be figuring out how to get GLOW back on TV and you know… I have a feeling that it’ll all come together again.’

‘But I literally have no idea because I’m not included in the writers’ room,’ she laughed. ‘I’m a writer [not for this show] and we’ve been writing a bunch and so it’s fun to theorise from a writers’ perspective.’

‘I hope Dawn and Stacey are just trying to get on TV as much as possible and make their way back to GLOW once it comes on the air as well,’ the star added.

While GLOW’s future is still in doubt, Rebekkah is remaining hopeful – more than anything, because she’s hoping to land herself a six-pack by the show’s end.

‘I started like one big mush and by the end of season one I had one ab, and each season I gain another ab,’ she said.

‘So hopefully we do six seasons at least, so then I’ll have a six pack!’

However, with Netflix cutting shows from their schedule left and right over the past month, nothing is remaining certain, and even with a cliffhanger ending, there’s no certainty that GLOW could return just yet.

She told us: ‘I can’t really think about it, because the thing with working in this business is that you really have no control over anything and you never know when you’re going to be the one that lucks out and gets to really fulfil the story.

‘Hopefully we get to tell the whole story that Liz and Carly have planned out, I really hope we do, but you really never know, so you try not to think about it because it stresses me out to think about possibility!

‘I really hope a lot of people watch it, because I think it’s an amazing season and I hope with everything in my heart that we just continue to get to keep making it.’

So what shows would she bring back, if given the opportunity?

‘Tuca and Bertie was such a good show and they only got to do one season,’ Rebekkah told us. ‘So that was disappointing. I’m trying to think, right now, the shows that I’ve been watching are fairly new. I love Dead to Me and Russian Doll and they’re both coming back.’

‘Nick Kroll’s show, Big Mouth! That show’s just been renewed for three seasons which is really exciting!,’ she added.

‘They cancel a lot of shows but I hope they continue to renew GLOW because it’s an awesome female ensemble, it’s a Jenji [Kohan] show and now that Orange [Is The New Black] is over I feel like you know, hey, we have to keep going on!

‘Plus how else will I wrestle, Netflix?!’

GLOW is available now on Netflix.
