Helen Mirren: I couldn’t get my head around Catherine The Great’s sexual liberation – so I thought like a man

Helen Mirren is Catherine The Great

Helen Mirren is back on the throne where she belongs. After winning countless accolades as both Queen Elizabeths, the 74-year-old is the most powerful woman that ever lived in Catherine The Great, a role which ultimately could only fall to the Oscar winner.

The Sky Atlantic and HBO drama will drop all four episodes next week; a bedazzling retelling of the most important figure in the history books most of us know nothing about.

She was a force, obviously, but she boasted a wicked sense of humour, was unimaginably forward-thinking (investing in female education in the 18th century was unheard of) and unapologetically sexual.

Catherine The Great will no doubt be an education for most. The German-born Empress remains the longest-running female leader of all time in Russia, which is remarkable considering her circumstance. She overthrew her own violent and drunk husband Peter III and built a strength in Russia it had never experienced before, becoming one of the greatest powers in Europe.

While Helen dismissed historic sexism towards Catherine, who was widely reported to have been killed trying to have sex with a horse – a total lie – Catherine The Great celebrates her promiscuity. At one point, while one of her lovers climbs the stairs to her bedroom another is crossing them on the way down.

Helen, who described herself as a ‘liberated’ woman and part of the sexual revolution of the 1960s, admitted she was bowled over by Catherine’s ‘sexual liberation’.

‘We are still coming out of a Victorianism, protestant puritanism,’ Helen explained to press including Metro.co.uk after being carried to her premiere by four men.

‘We’re still as a society coming out of that so we still have certain inbuilt attitudes and I have them even though I think of myself as a liberated woman – I couldn’t get my head around her sexual liberation.

‘I thought, “You just have to think like a man because men don’t have any problem with this.” So obviously it can be human quality if you like, just think like a bloke.’

Naturally, playing such a formidable part has taught Helen perhaps the most valuable life lesson.

‘Women, if they work hard they can do anything – absolutely anything,’ she continued. ‘If they have the capability and the ability to work hard because that was the defining quality of Cath was her ability to work incredibly hard.

‘If women can have the capability and can work hard they can do anything, including becoming the empress of Russia.’

All episodes of Sky original Catherine The Great are on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV on 3 October.

Motsi Mabuse is not here for fellow Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood’s scathing critiques.

They’ve only appeared together on one live show so far but the professional dancer turned judge was quick to defend Olympian James Cracknell, the competitor with the lowest score of the night.

Craig called James, who is partnered with Luba Mushtuk on the BBC One show, ‘lethargic’ after his dance.

The infamously critical judge then gave the rower a score of two.

Ouch.

However, speaking on Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two, Motsi said all the contestants should get a higher score than two simply for showing up.

The South African star said: ‘Everybody that tries on the show should at least get a three to start off.

She also added: ‘If you get a two? Just getting on your shoes you get two points.’

Of James, she said: ‘He’s an athlete. He just needs to show that side of himself.’

Mabuse also opened up on her experience of Strictly to date, saying: ‘It just doesn’t stop. It’s this wild moment.

‘It’s fun. I promised I will give Craig at one time or other a kiss, just to give him some soft edges.’

However, there’s one famously friendly judge Motsi has no issues with.

‘Bruno [Tonioli] – I just crack up,’ she said.

We might just be a few days in, but The Circle’s drama is getting us in a spin – and we’re not just talking about Richard Madeley’s twerking.

A second player has been blocked, and some viewers took to social media to voice their outrage at the decision.

Which player is out of The Circle and what else is happening so far?

Who left The Circle last night?

Farmer Sy is saying Sy-onara to the Circle after being chosen to leave.

Tim and ‘Sammie’ were voted as influencers by their fellow Circlers, which gave them the power to block Sy.

‘Sammie’ aka James announced to the Circlers that the decision was mostly down to not feeling ‘as well connected to this person as the others.’

Viewers were split about the decision, with some sad to see him go but others thinking the country boy might be better suited to life on the farm.

Sy might have split viewers, but ex-monk-turned-pastel-wearing-professor Tim has become the nation’s sweetheart.

The Circle airs weeknights and Sundays at 10pm on Channel 4.

Gwyneth Paltrow and tennis champion Martina Navratilova’s characters feature in just one of the storylines set to tantalise viewers in The Politician, the much-anticipated first production created by writer Brian Murphy following his £241 million deal with Netflix.

Released in the UK today, Murphy’s first show of his five-year contract features Paltrow as Georgina, the mother of a young man, Payton Hobart (Ben Platt), who is determined to become US President.

In her first acting role, Navratilova appears as Brigette, a horse trainer who is the lover of the wealthy Georgina.

Want to know the story behind the ace? Read on…

Who is Martina Navratilova?

Czech all-time great Navratilova is a familiar face on TV for tennis fans, having won an incredible nine Wimbledon titles between 1978 and 1990.

Her first championship in SW19 came as a 21-year-old, and she enjoyed an unbroken run of six titles from 1982.

She also won the US Open four times, the Australian Open three times and the French Open twice, recording most of her success during the early 1980s.

While many tennis stars prefer to keep a low profile, the charismatic Navratilova has been an outspoken supporter of charities for animal rights, gay rights and children.

She became one of the first high-profile sportspeople to come out as bisexual when she spoke about her sexuality in the US media in 1981.

A prolific tweeter, she confirmed her role in The Politician via tweets after being questioned by fans who thought they had spotted her in the official Netflix trailer.

She also frequently tweets her strong social and political views to her 291,000 followers, including her support for the Democrats and disdain for US President Donald Trump’s tweets.

Who is Martina Navratilova married to?

After publicly proposing to her at the 2014 US Open, Navratilova married her long-term partner, Julia Lemigova, three months later in New York.

The tennis icon admitted marrying for the first time at the age of 58 felt ‘really odd’, telling the BBC: ‘It’s about time, right?

‘Growing up as a gay woman, you just don’t think about that. Then, about ten years ago, I thought, “you know, within ten years I think gay marriage will be legal. And here we are, ten years later, making it legal.”

Lemigova said she was not surprised by the unabashed manner of Navratilova’s proposal and expressed her hope that it would inspire people in their position to feel empowered.

Navratilova spoke of her concern that gay sportspeople remain reluctant to reveal their sexuality, saying: ‘I am surprised that more players have not come out, particularly male players.

‘They’re so far in the closet that I don’t even know who they are. The fear is still there. Sport has been at the forefront on so many issue, but it’s not been great on the gay rights issue.’

The Politician is available to stream on Netflix now.

Darcey Bussell was one of the best judges of Strictly ever – and now news has emerged of why the ballet icon supposedly left the hit dancing show.

According to reports, the star moved on from the BBC One juggernaut because producers wanted her, and the other judges, to dance.

Admittedly, we would have loved to have seen that!

Insiders claim producers want all of this year’s judges to dances at times on the new series, which Darcey disagreed with, as she felt the dancing should be left to the celebs.

Addressing the rumours, Shirley Ballas said: ‘I do know the BBC wanted the professionals to do a little bit more dancing.

‘So I don’t know whether it was uncomfortable, or did she want to do it, or didn’t she want to do it?’

Speaking to The Sun, she added: ‘I was all up for it because I think: “You’re older but you’re not dead and you can still do a bit.”

‘You can’t do what those professionals do by any means, but you can get out there and show the public that you can still move your left and right foot.

‘Motsi, Craig and Bruno all love to dance. We get so excited. But I wish Darcey well and I’m sure she’ll find her own thing. She’s a national treasure.’

BBC chose not to comment on this story.

When announcing her departure, Darcey said: ‘It has been a complete privilege for me to be part of Strictly, working with such a talented team.

‘I have enjoyed every minute of my time and will miss everyone from my fellow judges, the presenters, the dancers, the musicians, the entire backstage team, and especially the viewers of the show, who have been so supportive.

‘I am not leaving because of any upset or disagreement at all, I am just stepping away to give more focus to my many other commitments in dance, after seven truly wonderful years that I can’t imagine having gone any better.

‘I know I will miss being part of this unique show and the fact that it celebrates dance is something I am so passionate about. I hope that I may be very lucky to be asked back again one day.’

Bruno Tonioli previously called 50-year-old Darcey’s decision to leave the show ‘a shock’.

The news comes after new judge Motsi Mabuse hit out at Craig Revel Horwood’s harsh scoring on Strictly this week

‘Everybody that tries on the show should at least get a three to start off,’ she said on It Takes Two. ‘If you get a two? Just getting on your shoes you get two points.’

Reps for Darcey Bussell have been approached by Metro.co.uk for comment.

Amanda Holden is left stunned as Bars And Melody return for Britain’s Got Talent: The Champions five years after their original audition.

The British pop duo, consisting of rapper Leondre ‘Bars’ Devries, 18, and singer Charlie ‘Melody’ Lenehan, 20, wowed the Britain’s Got Talent judges back in 2014.

After becoming Simon Cowell’s golden buzzer act, they made it through to the final where they finished in third place – losing out to Lucy Kay and Collabro.

The pair have since had sold out shows across the world, with their first album 143 even going platinum in Poland.

As they make their return to the show, judge Amanda Holden is particularly shocked by their grown-up appearance.

As they start performing one of their original songs, Amanda remarks: ‘Oh my God. They are men.’

Speaking after their performance, she added: ‘I had no idea about how successful you’d been across the world. Absolutely none, it’s blown my mind.

‘You’re really cool, really current. It was a great song and you have a massive fanbase out there.’

But will they make it through to the final? We’ll have to wait and see.

RuPaul reveals history of the term ‘drag’ proving every day is a school day

RuPaul Charles, the host of RuPaul’s Drag Race, revealed the etymology of the word drag on The Graham Norton Show and proved that every day is a school day.

The word has long had several meanings attached to it but RuPaul has now shared that ‘in folklore, the term drag they say, is from Shakespeare’.

Speaking on Graham Norton’s BBC One chat show on Friday, the Emmy winner added: ‘In stage directions, it would say “dressed as girl”, and the term drag is an acronym for stage direction “dressed as girl”.’

RuPaul, our eternal teacher (Picture: BBC)

‘Wow @RuPaul on @grahnort tonight.. drag = dressed as girl, from the Shakespeare stage directions, who knew?!’ tweeted one viewers whose mind was blown.

‘DRAG = DRessed As Girl. Taken from Shakespeare’s stage directions. Education right here on #TheGrahamNortonShow,’ added another.

Ru is a pillar of the drag community, and on the show, ahead of the launch of Drag Race UK on BBC Three on 3 October, he decided to give Helen Mirren and Jack Whitehall their own drag names.

Explaining how he’s ‘named several queens over the years’, RuPaul gives Helen and Jack their own drag personas in ‘Sir Lady Cheek Bones’ and ‘Jackie Black Ball’ which are kind of perfect.

‘England has a long history of queens and I thought everyone would be quite acidic like Danny La Rue, but because the US show had such a global awareness, the UK has taken on the same feel,’ he said of the UK version.

‘It is definitely English, but the two shows are more similar than they are different.’

The Graham Norton Show airs on Friday on BBC One at 10.35pm.

Saffron Barker is shutting down speculation of a Strictly curse with AJ Pritchard, with her rep insisting the pair are just ‘great friends’ after pictures emerged of them looking close this week.

The shots show Saffron with her arms around AJ’s neck and looking into his eyes during rehearsals.

Another shows them leaving rehearsals, with AJ’s arm placed around Saffron.

However, Saffron has no time for talk that the pair are becoming an item.

Reps for Saffron told Metro.co.uk: ‘AJ and Saffron are great friends and have been training really hard for their performance on Saturday evening – this is clearly only what these pictures show.

‘They are loving the competition and cannot wait to perform their Cha-Cha to the Nation.’

And that’s that.

AJ is, of course, dating dancer Abbie Quinnen, while Saffron is currently single.

AJ and Strictly Come Dancing have been approached by Metro.co.uk for comment.

Fans left unimpressed by ‘awful’ Snoop Dogg cover of Peaky Blinders theme song Red Right Hand

Snoop Dogg has done the unexpected and released a cover of the Peaky Blinders theme song – but most fans have been left unimpressed by how ‘awful’ it sounds.

The rapper is clearly a fan of the popular BBC One series as he’s put his own hip hop spin on the theme song, Red Right Hand, which is originally performed by Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds.

The officially Peaky Blinders Twitter account shared a video of the cover on 27 September, saying: ‘By order of the #PeakyBlinders, we present @SnoopDogg performing Red Right Hand.’

But most Peaky fans did not have the nicest things to say about it.

‘Garbage absolutely garbage, you’ve taken one of the best TV shows out at the moment with an already well-suited soundtrack and tainted it with this simply awful attempt at music,’ one fan said.

‘Love Peaky Blinders… Love Snoop Dogg… However mixing the two sounds like a complete cluster f***,’ another added.

While another simply said: ‘Absolute s***e.’

Ouch.

However, not all comments were negative – and some fans actually seemed to enjoy Snoop’s interpretation of the theme tune.

‘The beat slaps. They need to keep this version,’ one said.

Another chimed in: ‘It sounds great, I love it.’

And one particular fan went to lengths to defend Snoop’s version.

‘Why are y’all taking this seriously as if it’s gonna be in the show????’ they questioned.

‘Lmao, the man is obviously a fan, let him have some fun.’

This comes just as Peaky Blinders has concluded its fifth series which left viewers on a cliffhanger after the Shelby clan had been betrayed by a mysterious character,

Simon Cowell can’t quite believe his ears after listening to Genaddy Tkachenko on Britain’s Got Talent: The Champions, branding it the ‘weirdest thing’ he’s ever encountered.

The 55-year-old singer appeared on Georgia and Ukraine’s Got Talent, captivating judges with his ethereal, unconventional sounds which are largely improvised.

He’s set to try and impress judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and David Walliams on Britain’s Got Talent: The Champions tonight, although Simon is left more baffled than anything.

Shortly after his performance ends and before their official critique, Simon remarks: ‘Is that it? The weirdest thing I’ve ever heard.’

Considering he’s been a judge on Britain’s Got Talent and The X Factor for years, that’s certainly a worthy accolade.

So how weird is the sounds of Genaddy Tkachenko? You can catch his past performances below.

Joining Genaddy in tonight’s show is Britain’s Got Talent act Bars And Melody, who have undergone a grown-up transformation since they first auditioned five years prior.

On last week’s show, Simon pushed his golden buzzer for Stavros Flatley, who went straight through to the final alongside US comic Preacher Lawson.

They’ll be joined by sand artist, Kseniya Simonova, daredevil duo Bello and Anneliese Nock, dog troupe leader Alexa Laurenberger, dance act MerseyGirls, dance duo Paddy and Nicko and illusionist Darcy Oake.

Simon Cowell is left horrified after pulling a sword from a contestant’s mouth on Britain’s Got Talent: The Champions.

Sword swallower Alex Magala makes his return to Britain’s Got Talent after auditioning for the show back in 2016, where he shocked the judges with his death-defying stunts.

He’s had a long history with the Got Talent series across the world, winning Russia’s Got Talent in 2014, becoming a finalist in Britain’s Got Talent 2016 and Italia’s Got Talent 2013, along with appearances on the Ukraine, American and Australian versions too.

As he returns to compete on Britain’s Got Talent: The Champions, he tasks the judges with pulling a sword, which also lights on fire, from his mouth – with David Walliams first up.

After pulling out the sword unscathed, Simon Cowell is invited to try the same, only this time Alex suspends himself into the air on a set of ropes.

Pulling out the sword to much urgency from hosts Ant and Dec, Simon looks relieved and slightly shaken at what he’s just pulled off.

But will Alex’s performance secure him a place in the final?

On last week’s show, Simon Cowell pushed his golden buzzer for Stavros Flatley, who went straight through to the final alongside US comic Preacher Lawson.

They’ll be joined by sand artist, Kseniya Simonova, daredevil duo Bello and Anneliese Nock, dog troupe leader Alexa Laurenberger, dance act MerseyGirls, dance duo Paddy and Nicko and illusionist Darcy Oake.

Netflix series The Politician has only just launched and already people are wondering if there’s going to be a second season.

It’s little wonder, with Metro.co.uk’s own Tilly Pearce calling it ‘electric’, saying that it’s ‘got a great heart and is an unbelievably enjoyable watch.’

With that in mind, here’s what you need to know about the possibility of another season of The Politician…

Will there be a season 2 of The Politician?

Netflix has reportedly confirmed to RadioTimes.com that there will indeed be a second season of The Politician, with production due to start in October.

That means we could very well be able to see season two in 2020.

Series one has followed Payton Hobart (Ben Platt), a teenager who has his entitled heart set on becoming President of the United States one day.

The dark satire was created by Pose and American Horror Story Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan and Brad Falchuk, and also features the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Lucy Boynton and Jessica Lange.

The Politician is available to stream on Netflix now.

The Ghostwriter is back! (Picture: Apple TV+)

Ghostwriter, the classic 90s TV show for teens, is getting a reboot on Apple TV+.

The new streaming service has also released the trailer for the new show, introducing the young cast and it’s giving us major Goosebumps vibes.

The story revolves around a group of Brooklyn teens who solve mysteries with the help of a ghost.

The show originally ran from 1992-1995 and featured Samuel L. Jackson as one of the character’s dads.

A synopsis for the show reads: ‘When a ghost haunts a neighborhood bookstore and starts releasing fictional characters into the real world, four kids must team up to solve an exciting mystery surrounding the ghost’s unfinished business.’

It continues: ‘Each episode story arc is grouped around literature, featuring classics and new works commissioned from popular authors like DJ Machale and Kwame Alexander.’

Here’s hoping for a Hey Arnold reboot next.

The series drops on 1 November, along with the rest of Apple TV +’s offerings.

As Metro.co.uk reported earlier this month, joining Apple TV+ will cost just $5 a month – cheaper than Netflix, which comes in at $12.99 a month.

It’s not clear how much the service will cost in the UK.

The new service will launch on November 1 in 100 countries and regions.

Other new shows launching on the service include The Morning Show with Jennifer Aniston and Reece Witherspoon, and wildlife show The Elephant Queen.

Spitting Image is making a comeback – and heading to America

Spitting Image, the cult TV show that depicted politicians as puppets, is returning.

However, the show – which first aired in 1984 – will be moving to America for its next chapter.

Artist Roger Law, who worked on the original series, revealed the news on Friday on BBC Front Row.

US President Donald Trump, Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg are among the figures to be parodied in the pilot, which has already been filmed.

Law also told The Guardian that producers are now in advanced discussions with US-based networks to screen the show.

He added that the show will have a Meghan Markle puppet wearing a glittery ‘princess’ t-shirt and a Donald Trump puppet whose tweets are written by his anus.

Putin, meanwhile, will be shown wearing S&M gear.

Law said: ‘It’s pretty chaotic out there. As far as I’m concerned, it’s better than shouting at the television set, isn’t it? So I thought, let’s give it a go.’

He furthermore added of Trump: ‘I’ve heard other satirists say that he’s un-satirisable because he’s a satire in himself.

‘Well, with puppets you can go much, much further, because actors won’t do that for you. And by Christ, we are going to give it a go.’

He continued: ‘It’s true that Britain has a special tradition of caricature and satire, but I think that audiences around the world are sophisticated enough to enjoy it.

‘If not, we can also put in some puppets bonking heads with a coconut sound.’

Has the Strictly curse struck again and just what is it?

Strictly’s AJ and Saffron are on the receiving end of Strictly curse rumours (Picture: PA)

Strictly Come Dancing is becoming almost as known for its rumoured curse as it is for the dancing.

Forget Craig’s critiques or sexy sambas getting hearts racing, the curse is ruffling feathers.

Here’s what you need to know about the curse and who’s fallen for it in the past…

What is the Strictly curse?

When a celebrity and/or their dance partners go through a public breakup during their time on the show, that is what is known as the so-called Strictly curse.

Whether the cause is all the hours spent away rehearsing, the sometimes-undeniable chemistry between dance partners or just bad timing, the ‘curse’ has worked its black magic on nearly a dozen couples throughout the show’s existence.

Who has suffered from the Strictly curse?

Neil and Katya Jones

A huge scandal ripped through last year’s series of the show after dancer Katya Jones – who was then married to her fellow Strictly dancer Neil Jones – and comedian Seann Walsh were caught kissing in a London street.

The fallout was pretty epic, with Katya wearing a pointed message to her haters recently.

Neil and Katya announced their separation not long after, but both remain on the show this year.

The curse might have worked its way into their relationship, but the two have proven they’re still great friends.

Stacey Dooley

TV presenter – and last year’s Strictly champ – Stacey Dooley split with her boyfriend of three years, Sam Tucknott, after winning the show.

At the time, he spoke to The Sun and claimed Stacey was dating Strictly pro dancer Kevin Clifton.

Stacey and Kevin did end up together, but Dooley insists there was no overlapping of relationships.

The couple split after three years of marriage in 2018.

They still perform professionally together and insist there’s still a good friendship.

After announcing the split, they told Chris Evans’ Radio 2 breakfast show: ‘We’re still the best of friends – we still have a lot of love and respect for each other.’

She denied dancing with Kevin Clifton was the cause though.

The curse liked Flavia so much, it came back for seconds.

She went through a breakup with fellow dancer Vincent Simone and then became involved with EastEnders actor Matt Di Angelo during their pairing in the show in 2007.

However, that pair split in 2010 and Flavia began dating Coronation Street star Jimi Mistry, her celebrity partner in the show that year.

The couple are still together and married in 2013.

Actress Georgia May Foote broke up with her fellow Corrie co-star and beau Sean Ward after her time on the show.

She went on to date her dance partner, Giovanni Pernice, for a year.

She’s not so hot on talking about the alleged curse, though, branding it offensive.

The first victims of the curse back in 2004, the two both went through breakups during their time partnered together.

Newsreader Natasha split with Mike Barnard and Brendan was with Camilla Dallerup, another Strictly pro dancer.

Has the Strictly curse struck again?

Rumours are already swirling about a potential Strictly Curse 2019 lurking.

AJ Pritchard and Saffron Barker have been snapped looking close as they rehearse for their shows. Which makes perfect sense, since they’ve been paired together.

But that’s still not enough to stop some excitable viewers from wondering if the curse is ready to strike again.

Saffron has denied that there’s anything scandalous about their time spent together.

Reps for Saffron told Metro.co.uk: ‘AJ and Saffron are great friends and have been training really hard for their performance on Saturday evening – this is clearly only what these pictures show.’

Kelvin Fletcher has said he wants Strictly Come Dancing viewers to find his dancing so convincing that they believe he’s in love with his professional partner, Oti Mabuse.

And apparently this includes his wife, Liz Marsland.

The former Emmerdale star explained: ‘Why else do we watch Strictly? You’ve got these people and they have to look so majestic and beautiful and endearing and the story looks like, “Oh there’s something going on there”.

‘Two strangers spend ten hours a day together, connected by the hip, naturally touching and very close — nose to nose. There’s a lot of signals there of what people will be looking at.

‘If you’ve not bought into it then there’s something missing. So I absolutely expect, and I hope, that people watch me and Oti and see whatever narrative it is — whether that be that we’re in love — I want people to believe it.’

That’s brutal honesty if ever we heard it!

‘If there’s not that feeling there, my wife will be the first person to pull me up on it, because she absolutely wants to believe it too,’ he added to The Sun. ‘I’m lucky though. Liz knows me, she’s known me since I was eight-years-old, and we’re very happily married. And don’t forget, she’s watched me kiss numerous actresses on Emmerdale.

‘So we haven’t even had the “Strictly curse” conversation yet… perhaps we should.’

Kelvin and Liz tied the knot in 2015. The following year they welcomed a daughter, Marnie.

Collabro will address losing a member when they return to Britain’s Got Talent: The Champions tonight.

The guys of course won the 2014 series of the show.

But just like One Direction and the Spice Girls before them, they soon lost a founding member.

Richard Hadfield left the group two years after they won the show, citing tensions with his band mates.

And now, Matt Pagan, Michael Auger, Jamie Lambert and Thomas J Redgrave are returning to the show on which they found fame.

Dumferline Press reports Thomas as saying: ‘When we were on BGT last we were a five-piece.

‘We have been a four-piece now for the past three years.

‘We are still really excited about going on stage every single time, we have been working really hard and we can’t wait for you to hear what we have got in store for you.’

Richard opened up about his ‘almost unbearable’ time in the band after quitting, telling the Evening Standard his ‘mental health was at stake.’

‘People think that as I left, I automatically think I am better than everyone else, that I can do it alone,’ he said at the time. ‘That was not the intention. I just left as I wanted to be happy.’

Collabro will appear on tonight’s episode of the show, alongside an array of memorable past contestants.

These include swordsman Alex Magala, dancers Twist and Pulse, and singers Bars and Melody.

Britain’s Got Talent: The Champions continues tonight on ITV at 8.30pm.

What is Strictly Come Dancing star and Paralympian Will Bayley’s disability?

Strictly come dancing dancer Janette Manrara and paralympian will bayley
Will and Janette danced their way into sixth place on the first live show (Picture: PA)

Strictly Come Dancing had its first live show last week.

Will Bayley and dance partner Janette came a respectable sixth in the first week leader boards.

But that’s even more impressive considering he’s had to learn ballroom dancing with a condition that affects his joints.

What is Will Bayley’s condition?

Bayley has a condition known as arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC), sometimes known just as arthrogryposis.

The word comes from the Greek meaning ‘curving of joints.’

AMC is divided into three different groups: amyoplasia, distal arthrogryposis and syndromic.

Paralympian Will bayley strictly come dancing
Will has thrown himself into the cha-cha-challenge (Picture: PA)

Amyoplasia involves severe joint contractures and muscle weakness.

Any type of arthrogryposis with a neurological or muscle disease is grouped as syndromic.

Distal arthrogryposis involves the hands and the feet, and is what Will Bayley has.

How will it affect Will Bayley on Strictly Come Dancing?

The triple-medal Paralympian isn’t letting anything stop him for fighting for the Glitterball trophy.

He has been putting in the work to make sure him and partner Janette Marara – the team call themselves Team Pocket Racket – go as far as they can.

Bayley even danced so much that he started to bleed through his socks!

Janette isn’t letting the arthrogryposis slow down her intense training, though.

Speaking to Zoe Ball on It Takes Two, Will said: ‘I thought someone would be softer on me in the training hall because they might be, “Oh Will”… but she’s the opposite! We were doing lifts today and I kept falling over and she was like, “It’s your core! Use your core!”‘

Catch Will on Strictly Come Dancing tonight on BBC One from 6:40pm.
